This year, the Manchester Community Library celebrates its fifth anniversary. We rec-ognize that we have you to thank - not only for our beautiful building, but also for our growth and success over the past five years. Your support has turned a physical space into a living, breathing community hub with opportunities and resources for people of all ages and walks of life.

As you will see in the report that follows, this is an exciting time to be involved with the Library. Over the past year, we welcomed a new Executive Director, J. Violet Gannon (pictured), a new Youth Services Librarian, Rebecca Ventola, and a new Director of Advancement, Kristin Williams. Talented longtime Library staff member Kellie Morrison was promoted to Director of Patron Experience in tandem with a larger rebrand of our Help Desk Associates into Patron Experience Specialists, a term more reflective of the work our staff do and the care with which they do it. Other key ac-complishments include the completion of our first financial audit, a preliminary review of the cost of library maintenance over the next twenty years, and an exploration of expanding our patron access.

As we embark on a new year, we will revisit our strategic plan, develop budget projec-tions for the next three to five years, and build a communications plan for our various constituencies, including the Town of Manchester, who so generously votes to sup-port us from year to year. By thinking strategically, budgeting collaboratively, and com-municating relevantly, we will - with your continued support - position the Library to remain strong and vital for years to come.

Thank you again for the role you play in ensuring your Manchester Community Library’s place as an inspiring gathering place, a trusted resource, and a welcoming and stimulating environment for personal enrichment and social connection. We hope you will come visit us, and on any given day, see what the community of Manchester truly looks like. More than a container, we are a connector of interests, opportunities, and, most importantly, people. Our promise is in our name: Manchester Community Library is a place where this community is engaged in what it will become.

Thank you. We could not do this important work without you.

Warmly,

PROGRAMMINGTHE MANCHESTER COMMUNITY LIBRARY is an active steward

and participant in Manchester and the surrounding communi-ties’ rich cultural and historical legacy. As a hub of community life,

MCL connects people from all walks of life - of all ages, interests, and so-cioeconomic backgrounds. All of our programs are free and open to the public and are created thoughtfully in response to community needs.

Thanks to support from the M a p l e S t r e e t S c h o o l ,

MCL created a BOOK EXPRESS last year - 20 themed boxes featuring a culmination of books, manipulatives and props to create a multisenso-ry approach to learn-ing. Sample themes included the 5 senses, feelings, bugs and trans-portation. These kits are available for local daycares to check out and keep for a month.

In May 2019, as part of MENTAL HEALTH A W A R E N E S S

M O N T H , B u r l i n g t o n -b a s e d graphic novelist Rachel Lindsay came to MCL to discuss her personal jour-ney with bipolar illness, the treatment of mental illness, the role of art and expres-sion in the healing process, and the often unavoidable choice between sanity and happiness. Lindsay sold copies of her graphic mem-oir RX and 10 percent of the proceeds were donated to United Counseling Service by Northshire Bookstore.

S U P E R S A T U R D A Y S at the Library,

sponsored by the Bank of Bennington, have be-come a family favorite! Each month throughout the year featured fun, engaging programs for children and the young at heart. On any given month, you may have seen the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, or Star Wars characters roaming the aisles. You may have even heard music from the shelves! This special day once per month boasted fun stories, crafts, activ-ities and special guests.

The annual MCL SUMMER READ-ING PROGRAM

was a success! 264 total children signed up for the program, with 42 of those being teenagers. This was the first year we hosted a summer read-ing program with a sepa-rate log and special priz-es for teen readers, and the response was over-whelmingly posit ive.

including 11 young adult programs

The Manchester Com-munity Library has become a MAH

JONGG destination! Mah Jongg expert and teach-er Lynn Kaplan launched a series of Mah Jongg class-es for beginners on Fri-days during the summer. These Mah Jongg novices quickly learned the game play, earned their National Mah Jongg League play-ing cards, and became eligible to participate in another exciting offering at the Library hosted by Lynn - Mah Jongg Open Play. The Open Play took place through the fall on Mondays from 1:30-4:30 and is being offered again this year!

Another new group at the Library has become one of our most popular, connecting an in-tergenerational group of gamers! Young

people from the area have begun gathering in the Library at 7pm on Tuesday nights to embark upon imaginary adventures together through the game of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. This program is led by Patron Experience Specialist Stephen Niles.

In February 2019, local residents enjoyed a night of Vermont trivia in col-

laboration with the Man-chester Historical Society and the Vermont Historical Society! Teams competed for prizes and tested their knowledge of the Green Mountain State as well as some local fun facts. More trivia nights to come this year - stay tuned!

GRANT INCOME: $127,134

We could not do the work we do at MCL without the generous gift of time and energy from our wonderful group of volun-teers. Over 80 volunteers are actively involved with the

Library, contributing over 2,600 hours of service this past year. Volunteers help the Library in many ways with their unique talents, skills, and knowledge, connecting people and building community.

If you are interested in volunteering for the Library, please complete a Volunteer Application, available at

the Help Desk. Once received, we will schedule a time to discuss opportunities that may be a good fit with

your skills and interests.

As of July 31, 2019, the Library’s endowment equaled $2,579,930. Based upon current policy, MCL can use up to 4% of the average market value over twelve trailing quarters to offset annual budget expenses.

In FY19, the Library effected an endowment draw of $89,439.
