The SINP in Context

-National Marine Component of GBIF France

-Fully inter-operable with GBIF standards (and therefore OBIS - SCARMarBIN)

-Extending with marine-specific elements

-Biogeographic scale

Why do this?

Basic requirement to know where, when and what is being monitored/studied in the French marine environment (EEZ) -accessible from a central point

Allows:

-Better coordination of resources

-Analysis of whether French data is geographically and temporally sufficient to provide robust assessments of the marine environment

CAML Workshop– Villefranche-sur-mer – 18th May 2010

SINP and data archiving

-Submitting datasets in accredited data archive centres- a way of ensuring data is not lost:

Archaeology and rescue for historic data Repositories for new data

-All archived datasets have to be documented properly

-No dataset is publically available without specific permission of the data originator

-Metadata records freely accessible

CAML Workshop– Villefranche-sur-mer – 18th May 2010

The SINP « mission »

-Enable data capture for re-use which leads to

-An efficient gap analysis which in turn

-Channels new data acquisition

-Above all, the ministry of environment government tool for « rapportage »

Why have a SINP ? •Carry out a census of all national, regional and local stakeholders for managing the French natural heritage

•Facilitate the identification and summarisation of future data and acquisiton needs

•Allow the harmonisation of methods and means for a more concerted and efficient knowledge acquisition

•Improve access to, and reuse of data and information relating to the environment for everyone (INSPIRE)

Why have a SINP « mer » ? Very specific : management, stakeholders and data
