Easter Sunday 4/12/2020
Please stand as you are able The brief order of Confession and Absolution LBW p. 56 P: In the Name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thought of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection and self-examination. P: Most merciful God, C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hymn “Christ is Risen! Alleluia!” LBW 131

The Collect of the Day
Let us pray…. God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of
life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as Your
people toward the fullness of eternal life with You, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives
and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The First Lesson Jeremiah 31:1-6
The first lesson is from the 31st chapter of Jeremiah
31 “At that time, declares the LORD, I will be the God of all the clans of
Israel, and they shall be my people.”
2 Thus says the LORD:
“The people who survived the sword
found grace in the wilderness;
when Israel sought for rest,
3 the LORD appeared to him[a] from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
4 Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
O virgin Israel!
Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.
5 Again you shall plant vineyards
on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
and shall enjoy the fruit.
6 For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
in the hill country of Ephraim:
‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
to the LORD our God.’”

Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 LBW p. 272
Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24
1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his mercy endures forever.
2Let Israel now proclaim, "His mercy endures forever."
14The LORD is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.
15There is a sound of exultation and victory
in the tents of the righteous:
16"The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! The right hand of
the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the LORD has
triumphed!"
17I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the LORD.
18The LORD has punished me sorely,
but he did not hand me over to death.
19Open for me the gates of righteousness;
I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD.
20"This is the gate of the LORD;
he who is righteous may enter."
21I will give thanks to you, for you answered me
and have become my salvation.
22The same stone which the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23This is the LORD's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24On this day the LORD has acted;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.

The Second Lesson Acts 10:34-43
The second lesson is from the 10th chapter of Acts
34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows
no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is
right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to
Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of
all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all
Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John
proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and
with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed
by the devil, for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all that he
did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death
by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and made
him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by
God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the
dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that
he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. 43 To
him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him
receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Stand Gospel Acclamation “Alleluia. Lord, to whom…” LBW p. 62
The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 20th chapter
The Gospel John 20: 1-18
Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,
while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the
tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one
whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the
tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out
with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them
were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the
tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but
he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the
tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had
been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place
by itself.8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went
in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the
13
Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back
to their homes.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped
to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the
body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.13 They said to
her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken
away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said
this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that
it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom
are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir,
if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will
take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in
Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not
cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers
and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God
and your God.’”18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I
have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen
and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the
Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from
heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was
made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.

The Prayers of the Church
Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs.
A brief silence
Thank you, dear Father, for the forgiveness, peace, and salvation won for us by your beloved Son. Purify
our spirits so we may behold his fair beauty forever. Open our mouths to proclaim his victory over our
ancient enemy. Fill our lives with your Spirit, so that in all things, we bear witness to Jesus’ triumph over
sin, death, and the devil. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Adorn your Church and look kindly upon its worship of your risen Son. Make it radiant in faith, lovely in
holiness, and beautiful in charity. By its words and deeds, bring many to know and adore Jesus as Savior
and Lord. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Fill our persecuted sisters and brothers with faith, courage, and joy. Let their faces shine with confidence
in the victory of Jesus over everything that torments them. Let that light shine on their enemies, so they
see the truth of Jesus’ Lordship, and turn to him in repentant faith.
Lord, in your mercy, please hear our prayer.
Feed the people of this congregation with your love, mercy, forgiveness, and goodness. Use us to draw
many who are afar off into your welcoming embrace, so together we sing: “Christ is risen! Alleluia!”
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
We ask your blessing upon visitors in our midst. Give us fitting words and loving hearts, so we share the
hope that is in us on account of Jesus’ resurrection. Give them new, or renewed, faith in Christ, for he is
their hope and heart’s desire. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
17
Bestow your peace upon this weary and war-sick world. Teach all who wield authority and power, in any
field or enterprise, to use those gifts wisely and humbly. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Even in this season of gladness, good men and women must risk their lives to protect others and stand
against the forces of chaos and hatred especially our healthcare workers and first responders. Shield,
strengthen and direct them, dear Lord. Let their words and deeds accomplish your will. Keep them safe,
support their loved ones and speed the day when war shall be no more. Lord, in your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Grant that Jesus’ triumph over sin and death may bless all who are bowed down in suffering of any kind.
Especially we lift before you the needs of…………. We pray for all who are suffering from Covid-19. Bring
healing upon our world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
We thank you for the lives and the faithful witness of those who have already gone to your glorious
Kingdom of light. Let your Son accompany us along our pilgrimage, to lighten our load and illuminate our
path. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Peace is shared
The peace of the Lord be with you always
And also with you.

Preface
21
Sanctus “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord…” LBW pg. 69
22
Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father:
Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign.
You have filled all creation with light and life;
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Through the prophets you renewed your promise;
and, at this end of all the ages, you sent your Son,
who in words in deeds proclaimed your kingdom
and was obedient to your will, even to giving his life.
In the night
in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread,
and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper,
He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
23
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the
Lord’s death until he comes.
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Therefore, gracious Father, with this bread and cup
we remember the life our Lord offered for us.
And, believing the witness of his resurrection,
we await his coming in power to share with us
the great and promised feast.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
Send now, we pray, your Holy Spirit,
the spirit of our Lord and of his resurrection,
that we who receive the Lord’s body and blood
may live to the praise of your glory
and receive our inheritance
with all your saints in light.
Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.
Join our prayers with those of your servants
of every time and every place, and unite them
with the ceaseless petitions of our great high priest
until he comes as victorious Lord of all.

The Pater Noster LBW p. 71
Our Father, who art in heaven, hollowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen.
