MMC Is a Widely Distributed Project
Participants Oak Ridge National Laboratory Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign National Institutes of Standards and Technology Argonne National Laboratory
Support DOE - Mathematical Informational and Computational Sciences DOE - Basic Energy Sciences DOE - Energy Efficiency DOC - NIST US Industry Multinational Industry
Partners Gatan, Inc. RJ Lee Instruments Ltd. EMiSPEC Systems, Inc. Philips Electron Optics NSA - Hitachi Scientific
Instruments JEOL USA, Inc. Sun Microsystems, Inc. Graham Technology Solutions,
Inc.
MMC Is Moving Forward
We have automated many instrument operations One cannot have remote control without computer control
We have put web video everywhere 38 video streams at last count
We have several instruments online today Now that the tools are ready, many more will be online soon
We have actively promoted electronic collaboration Demos, not just talks, at major events in the US and abroad
Our industrial partners are active This is not easy to do but is critical for wide spread adoption of our
technologies in the future
We are active in education Involved in several classrooms and schools, and have developed a
proposal with ORAU for significantly greater interaction with universities
Our Industrial Partners Are Responding to the Needs of the MMC
RJ Lee is using streaming web video as part of its analytical services business and is incorporating remote operation in its next product
Gatan and EMiSPEC are implementing remote control in their next version updates
JEOL has changed its approach to design of its next generation control system due to its interaction with the MMC
Philips is announcing a new software interface for remote control at a trade show next month
Hitachi has converted its SEM to full computer control
MMC Is Promoting Collaboratories

Security Is Vital on the Web
We are working with Bill Johnston’s Distributed Security Architectures project and intend to utilize the LBNL Akenti certificate mechanism for enhanced authorization
We have installed a customized CA to issue role-based X.509 certificates
We have installed Firewall1 to protect the ORNL machines
