Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a talented achiever with first-class intellectual capacity, energy, and integrity seeking to immerse him or herself into a rigorous and challenging MBA programme while working at the same time. We are looking for highly motivated and skilled leadership personalities with a good undergraduate degree (bachelor or equivalent), ≥ two years of relevant professional experience after first graduation, and proficiency in English (TOEFL score of ≥ 80 internet-based or equivalent).

Leuphana University invites tomorrow’s leaders into a unique programme that combines real-life business contents with the academic rigour of a young and dynamic public university in Germany. Our MBA in Stra-tegic Management prepares managers for current and future challenges through a specifically tailored business education in the core areas of Management, Strategic Management of Resources, and Innovation, Change and Growth.

Geared to Meet the Interests of the Leaders of Tomorrow

The MBA in Strategic Management is an exclusive programme developed and launched in cooperation with our business partner Otto Group. Since 2008 this programme has been successfully run and is now open to additional business partners and applications from the general public.

Integrating the high standards of academia with the specific demands of today’s business challenges, it aims at providing students with a comprehensive knowledge of what determines the actual and future chal-lenges and opportunities of strategic management in a world of change. The programme was designed to give students the opportunity to step back and reflect on business from various perspectives, putting special emphasis on the practical relevance of the knowledge we deliver.

Students will have the chance to test, challenge and enhance their knowledge and critical faculties – not only in dialogue with our faculty and interaction with their fellow-students but also in direct exchange with leading managers and experts of our business partners.

Responsible Management Across the Functions of the Firm

We educate managers to operate in fluctuating environments with altering goals and under changing strate-gies. The curriculum aims to strengthen and develop the managers’ capacity for critical analysis, evidence-based assessment, and responsible action across the functions of the firm. Students will learn fundamental tools of managerial, economic, and financial analysis and action. They will develop their practical skills and will test and apply their abilities to develop innovative business solutions for new products and markets. The programme will also enable students to look beyond immediate short-term interests to incorporate so-cial and environmental responsibilities into decision-making processes within a profit orientated business environment.

Life Long Learning Leaders

The programme aims to develop autonomous learning competencies. Our highly interactive lectures, semi-nars and projects require significant preparation before class. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning outcomes and undertake preparatory readings and assignments. Participants are required to make regular presentations in class and to complete individual and group assignments. Between contact weekends, students will use our electronic service platform to complete and upload their individual course work and group assignments. The platform contains all relevant course material including timetables, course outlines and readings, lecture slides, and other programme or course-specific information.

Lecturers are encouraged to keep the course topics flexible and to tailor assessment methods to best enable a link of theory to students’ individual practice and to support the desired learning outcomes. In order to assure a direct connection of theory to practice participants will in many cases write their own case studies by integrating topics and problem sets of their individual work experience into presentations and essays and by determining the topics of their papers and master thesis themselves.

HEAR WHAT OUR ALUMNI SAY

An attractive choice and a worthwhile investment“Stimulated by state of the art research and related ongoing debates, I was able to reflect again on vari-ous topics and problem sets ten years after my first degree. This experience makes the MBA in Strategic Management an attractive choice and a worthwhile investment even for people with a first degree in business studies.”

Anja Herter, Head of Special Projects, Otto Group Consulting, Otto Group

Benefit from your fellow students’ experience“The MBA in Strategic Management not only opens up new career options, it also helped me progress considerably on a personal level. Debating passio-nately with fellow students and lecturers made me look at problem sets from new perspectives and thus gave me precious new insights. Both now still have a tremendous influence on how I act and deci-de in my daily work. I was able to benefit especially from my fellow-students’ extensive and diverse life and work experience, from the “stories” they told.”

Frank Erdmann, IT-Project Leader, Hermes Fulfilment GmbH

Complex processes are no longer impossible tasks“The MBA in Strategic Management prepares its stu-dents for all aspects of management. The importance of strategic management as well as decisive aspects in planning and implementing strategic manage-ment, innovation, and sustainable change manage-ment were introduced with great clarity. Complex pro-cesses - such as restructuring of big business units, turn-around or innovative projects challenging the organisation and changing radically the company’s business model – are now manageable tasks.”

Stefan Heiden, Head of IT – IT-Operations,CTS EVENTIM Solutions GmbH

Step back and think out of the box”People wanting to leave the daily treadmill and willing to step back from their daily routine in order to think “out of the box”, people who are resistant to stress and can handle a considerable workload are ideal candidates for the MBA in Strategic Ma-nagement of Leuphana University. I was inspired by academic theories and practical application, was able to optimise my approach to solving complex problems, and last but not least all these effects boosted my self-confidence enormously.”

Bettina Wiegen, Head of Purchasing Support, Sportscheck

OUR RIGOROUS MBA CURRICULUM: OVERVIEW OF MODULES AND COURSES

Prof. Dr. Markus Reihlen, Vice President and Programme Director MBA in Strategic Manage-ment, Otto Group Chair of Strategic Management, Leuphana University of Lüneburg

“Teaching on the MBA programme is a rewarding yet challenging experience for me and for our faculty. The students’ professional and academic backgrounds are very diverse which represents a significant challenge for teaching. We need to teach less and listen more. Course topics need to be flexible in order to adapt them to the students’ needs. Teaching MBA students is also very rewarding because due to their professional experience students reflect on the topics taught from different perspectives and with direct link to their work. Pursuing an MBA programme is a great experience even for graduates of business studies. Due to the decisions they had to take at work and the business projects they have completed they discuss problem sets and theories from a different angle and with a different personal commitment than undergraduates.”

Linking Theory to Practice

Our faculty members are excellent academics with international and/or management experience. They are deeply rooted in Leuphana University of Lüneburg and have all extended experience in teaching practising professionals. Topics directly linked to business life like Business Model Innovation, Effective Business Com-munication, and Programme and Project Management, are taught by practising managers. Our competent Leuphana faculty is joined by lecturers from other German and international universities like Copenhagen Business School, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of St. Gallen, European University Viadrina, University of Cologne, Technical University Munich, and others. We closely link theory to practice by offering fireside chats with practising managers from our cooperation partners and integrating them into class for talks, debates, case studies, and question time.
