THE MACGUFFINJuly 30 - August 4, 2019TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL
OFFICE 231 - 392 - 1134
Dearest volunteers—
I salute you for your service to this festival, to this community, to this art form we call “the cinema.” For 15 years you have selflessly given of yourself to make this event happen in the woods of Northern Michigan. Well, not ex-actly “in the woods,” but close enough. Hemingway liked it up here, and so did Jim Harrison and JonBenét Ramsey’s family. Iggy Pop played his first gig north of here. Al Capone had a hideout here.
The man who made it possible for Mc-Donald’s to freeze-blast their cherry and apple pies in order to ship them fresh everywhere was from here. Justin Timberlake has been spotted here. I did something on Lake Charlevoix in 1973 during the Watergate hearings that I’m still not allowed to talk about but will if asked at Mike’s Surprise.
So much history! You have been part of that history with me. I can’t thank you enough for it.
So digest this little guide and it will help you have a fun, stress-free week. It will enlighten and inspire and it will make you see ponys and rainbows. I want you to have a great time this week! Let loose! Be the person they won’t let you be back home—whether home is
In film, as Hitchcock said, the MacGuffin is the driving force of a movie, the object of everybody’s search or desire, like the Maltese Falcon or the Ark of the Covenant. At the TCFF, volunteers are the driving force of the festival, and the MacGuffin is your guide to directing the festival’s success.
Letter From Our Founder

Table of ContentsXainesville, Ohio or Barlow Street in Traverse City. You are all Sparta-cus! Throw off your chains and live your life! Who said you have to ac-cept things the way they are?! Go volunteer-crazy this week! Act like this is YOUR film festival because it is! If someone asks you “Who directed that film,?” you say “I DID!” Because the movie isn’t truly finished until the audience sees it—and for many of these brilliant films this week, most people would otherwise never have the chance to see them if you and your fellow volunteers hadn’t given of your precious time to bring these movies to them. So thank you. Thank you for that. Thank you for helping to keep alive one of the two major art forms this country has given the world—jazz, and the movies. If I see you playing your sax on the beach, I thank you for that, too.
Let’s go movie this town up!

BE SURE TO HAVE:• One volunteer tearing tickets.• One volunteer counting patrons on the clicker.• One volunteer keeping record of hologram sticker passes.*

On the Line
THE MACGUFFIN 7
LINE WRANGLER INFO:1 Proactively look for anyone who may want to wait inside (elders, people using assistive mobility devices, etc). See also Pro Tip #1.
2 If it’s hot and/or people have been waiting in line for a while, bring water outside to patrons.
3 Make the lines fun! Run contests! Sing! Do ice breakers! You have a captive audience!
4 Make people in line aware that they are welcome to go inside the venue to use the bathroom and buy concessions.
5 Send voucher holders to the venue box office to exchange vouchers for tickets. If the show is sold out, instruct them to wait in the standby line. People in the standby line with a voucher receive priority in the standby line. 6 Look for back-to-back moviegoers at your venue. They must exit the auditorium and take their belongings. They wait in the area designated by the specific venue for back-to-back ticket holders.7 If you don’t know the answer to a question. refer patrons to anyone wearing “Ask Me” buttons.
8 Hand out Friends of the Film Festival cards at the door of every screening . Explain the program if anyone asks.
9 Hand out Official TCFF Programs at every screening!
10 If there is a delay in loading the venue, proactively explain to people in line and give details, if possible. Smile! Communicate! You’ve got this!
11 Ask if anyone has any questions (shuttles, parking, panels, Open Space, Kids Fest, etc.).
12 Check for people holding WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE tickets. Escort them to a special waiting area inside the venue. They are seated before the sponsor line.

BACK-TO-BACK• Moviegoers attending two movies at the same venue back-to-back must exit the venue with their belongings & stand in back-to-back line.• Back-to-back line enters after Sponsor/Filmmaker line.
GENERAL ADMISSION• Enters the theater following the back-to-back line.
• Everyone must have a ticket.
• If they do not have a ticket, direct them to the box office or standby line.
SPONSOR/FILMMAKER• Accessible/Wheelchair/Extra Assistance patrons sit inside venue with one guest until they are seated first.
• Sponsor/Filmmaker line is the first line to be seated.
• Sponsors/Filmmakers in line must have a green, yellow, or orange credential lanyard.
• Sponsors/Filmmakers in line must have received a line number card, depending on venue. Line enters in order by number, volunteers collect line numbers.

THE MACGUFFIN 17
FAQ
What is the TCFF?The festival is a charitable and educational nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by filmmaker and local resident Michael Moore. Each year it holds an amazing, one-of-a-kind film festival in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, Traverse City, MI. The festival also operates two year-round arthouse movie the-aters, the State Theatre and Bijou by the Bay.
Where is the Festival Box Office? The Main Box Office is at 120 Park Street, between Front and State Streets (in the old Sorellina building). All of our indoor festival movie theaters also have their own fully-functioning box offices
Where is the Festival Office?Volunteers can sign up for shifts, ask questions, and get credentials and tshirts at our festival office located at 140 E. Front St, second floor of the Arcade building.
Are there any free movies and events at the festival? Each night of the festival, classic films are shown on the waterfront in the city’s Open Space park on a giant inflatable screen for free! Seating is general admission. Be sure to bring chairs and blankets. There are also free panels, $1 kids mov-ies, free Kids Fest Lawn Party paired with the Open Space films, free student film screenings, $5 tribute screenings, and $5 film school classes everyone can enjoy.
What is a Friend of the Film Festival?Friends membership support makes it possible for the festival to bring great films and filmmakers to Traverse City while keeping ticket prices affordable for the entire community. And here’s the best benefit of all: Friends of the Film Festival get to buy tickets to next year’s film festival a WEEK before they go on sale to the gener-al public. They also receive party discounts and tickets to the Friends Only Screen-ing Parties. Friends are the festival’s financial backbone, and handing out Friends Cards at every screening could not be more important. More details on page 21.
Does Michael Moore own the festival? No, Michael Moore is, and always will be, our nonprofit festival’s first volunteer. And he continues to volunteer, just like all of our other board members.
TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL18
SWAGger for Days
What is SWAG?
SWAG OPPORTUNITIES• Any shift on Saturday and Sunday of the festival or the Monday after the fest• Any shift at the warehouse earns DOUBLE SWAG• Any shift that goes into the midnight hours (Open Space, Midnights at the State)• Additional SWAG shifts announced in volunteer eblasts and updates
HOW DO I USE MY SWAG BUCKS?• Attend the Volunteer Party on Monday, August 5. • Your turn to visit the SWAG Redemption table will be randomly determined upon arrival at the party
WHAT IF I DON’T GET MY SWAG BUCKS?• If you experience a SWAG snafu, we are sorry. SWAG is not a perfect system, but it is driven by urgent festival needs. Please know just how much your contributionis appreciated and valued. We appreciate your understanding!
SWAG Bucks are given to people who work challenging, late night, and weekend shifts. SWAG Bucks can then be combined and redeemed—arcade-ticket style—for some “fabulous” prizes at the Volunteer Party on Monday, August 5. Primo SWAG items will be worth more SWAG Bucks, so the more SWAG shifts you work, the better your chance at getting the best SWAG.
