Expanding Biophotonics and Medical Application Expertise
• International search identified Prof. Stefan Andersson-Engels, Director of Medical Laser Centre at Lund University, Sweden as leading candidate
• Main fields of interest– Laser spectroscopy and imaging for medical
diagnostics, Photodynamic therapy, Tissue Optics
• Academic leader and active entrepreneur– >400 publications, H-Index of 52, 3 biomedical start-
up companies
– Extensive experience of working with clinicians
• Current status– SFI Professorship application (value €5M) funded
– Started full-time at Tyndall 1st September

Tissue Imaging
• Various techniques are today used
in medical imaging and
interactions.
• Optics provides unique molecular
contrast opportunities in tissues.
• There is a great need for improved
tools for interacting with deep
tissue regions.
• Photo-acoustics is a technique
starting to enter the preclinical
and clinical use.

Some Suggestions
• Working with medtech companies or interested in translating
research to medtech sector, then we need to be strategic.
• They will want a system level approach or understanding.
• Device classification.
• Propose and build technology platforms. Third parties &
Supply Chain.
• Starting point remember the ABC Model.
• Understand the clinical procedures ask for a target or typical
procedure. Try and understand commercial application early.
• Regulatory Path , in-vivo testing , first in man & Clinical .
• Contract Research Agreement , NDA , get pro-forma versions
to the Industry partner early these can take a year to
conclude, insurance and liabilities.
• Researcher in Residence program.
