The men on the other two crosses
JESUS’ PATH TO THE CROSS IN LUKE• Jesus prays in the garden of Gethsemane (22:39-46).
• Jesus is arrested by soldiers (22:47-53).
• Jesus is tried before the high priest. Peter denies him. Soldiers mock and beat him (22:54-65).
• Jesus appears before the Jewish leaders. They condemn him (22:66-71).
• Jesus is taken to Pilate, the Roman governor, who sends him to Herod who sends him back to Pilate (23:1-12)
• Jesus appears again before Pilate who gives in to the crowd and condemns Jesus to die on the cross (23:13-25).

ISAIAH’S PROPHECY OF THE TWO THIEVES
• Mark 15:28 – They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 2And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.” [KJV].
• Isaiah 53:12 – …He poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors; for He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

BOTH THIEVES MOCKED JESUS AT FIRST
• Matthew 27:44 – The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
• Mark 15:32 – Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
1. He admitted he was a sinner.
2. He realized God would punish his sin.
3. He realized Jesus was his only hope.
4. He asked Jesus for eternal life, believing he could provide it. • “Remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
THE REASONING OF THE 2ND THIEF (LUKE 23:40-43)
1. He admitted he was a sinner.
2. He realized his sin must be punished.
3. He realized Jesus was his only hope.
4. He asked Jesus for eternal life, believing he could provide it.
1. I must admit I’m a sinner.
• Romans 3:10 – There is no one righteous, not even one…
• Romans 3:23 … for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
HOW CAN I KNOW I’M GOING TO HEAVEN?
2. God must punish my sin.
• Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men…
• Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death…
• Hebrews 9:27 – Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,

HOW CAN I KNOW I’M GOING TO HEAVEN?
3. Jesus is my only hope because He paid for my sin.
• Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
• 1 Peter 2:24 – He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross.
• 2 Corinthians 5:21 – God made him who had no sin to be sin for us…

HOW CAN I KNOW I’M GOING TO HEAVEN?
4. I must choose to put my faith in Jesus Christ alone.
• John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
• Romans 3:22 – This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.

4. He asked Jesus for eternal life, believing he could provide it.
HOW CAN I KNOW I’M GOING TO HEAVEN?
WHAT ARE YOU TRUSTING IN TO GET TO HEAVEN?
• Ephesians 2:8-9 – For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast.
