Heresponded quickly to the j allegation fby PresidentFord that Congress was to blame for the imminentfall of S. Vietnam. The Senator pointed out that thefacts don't fit thejPresident's allegation - Am ericahas never done so much for a country the size of S.Vietnam as we did there! He noted that 55,000 mendied there, and that the A merican government spent$150 billion there . "We've done all that we could for along time.... we cando no more."The Senator stated'that the downfall of SouthVietnam was "a ma tter of weeks" and that Congress

Whenasked if the removal of the Thieu regime wouldchange the situation, the Senator responded that thesituation has moved beyond the point of no return -the -South Vietnamese dotft4even*have the will todefend their nation. * fWhen asked his views' on the Middle East, theSenator responded that Isra el is a far different casefrom Vietnam. He noted that the country has neverneeded troop support from the U nited States, that ourmilitary support is negligible compared to that ofVietnam, and that the people of Israel have|provenover and over (hat they have the will to survive../.The Senator was strong in his support for Israel in theMiddle E ast and expressed hope jthat the Genevaconferencewould be productive.| A.member of the U nited S tates Senate since 1957when he filled the seat vacated by the death ofSenator Joseph McCarthy Senator Proxmire hasdeveloped a reputation for having a keen eye onwaste in the federal government operation. He is bestnoted for his severe criticisms of waste in theDefense establishment. During the interview, however, the Senator made it clea r that he believesthat the U nited States should have a strong military -the stronge st in the world, but it should be efficient. He estimated that $7 billion could be pared from thepresent Defense budget, ami expressed hope that thiswould be the case in the p resen t Congress*

We've moved into our new quarters, and here they are!The new Merciad office is on2nd floor, Old Main, just off theCareer Planning Centerbut where's the staff?

At the end of Spring term, some Mercyhurststudents may be surprised to see an unfamiliar lettergrade on their report cardsIEC; This new gradewas created and approved a t the March 12th meetingof the Mercyhurst College Senate.Students receiving an IEC grade on their reportcard are required to participate in the MercyhurstEnglish Clime to replace [the IEC grade (IncompleteEnglish Clinic) with the grade that theyearned in the course in which they received an IEC.The Mercyhurst English Clime, founded this yearunder the direction or Mr. Andrew Roth is atremendous asset to Mercyhurst students. Basicpurpose of the clinic is to help students work outdifficulties in their writing style, thus becomingbetter all-around students. The services is providedf ree-of-charge by the college. |Mr.1 Roth believes that if any student has a goodcommand of the English language and.has developeda concise understanding of grammar^and sentencestructure, he will be able to raise the grade he gets inany course one point on the basis of mechanical skills

The English Clinic, therefore, has the potential ofbeing a workshop for developing writing, skills androoting out poor writing habits. Some ofgthe

mechanisms1 used in the^English* "workshop" include: a diagnostic test to pinpoint weaknesses, tutors available to work with studen ts on a one-to-onebasis, and a wealth of information on subjectsranging from spelling and grammar to the importanttask of writing a term paper, i k| Any bad feelings that m ight surround the practiceof receiving an IEC from an instructor are totallyunfounded. When a teacher gives a student an"IncompleteEnglish Clinic", it is basically for thestudent's own benefit Although the student may havea clear understanding of the material presented in aclass, he or she may not be able to express themselves "with * certain degree of organizatioaReceiving anllEC, therefore, is by no^means apunishment,According to Sr. Eustace, head of the EnglishDepartment, a well-educated individual is one whocan speak and write well. In addition, the ability tocommunicate thoughts through writing is a basicskill needed in any job situatioa Therefore, studentsare invited, IEC or nojIEC, to stop by the EnglishClinic, which is located on the third floor of Old Main,to improve their own-ability to communicate theirideas for the remainder of their time a t Mercyhurstand then later onin the demanding career w orld.

B o m b S c a r eDear Editor, |I am w riting this lette r on the subect of the bombscare that took place here on Thursday, March 6.1,as a student, saw it as a pretty sick joke by someone.I also saw it as a pretty sick thing for a majority ofstudents and faculty to laugh at. Of course, at the endsecurity wa s both laughed at and condemned for itsactions, but ISwould like toilthank and congratulateWil Sydow and the security department, CherylFilley, in Information, Sr. Ph yllis and anyone else Ihave forgotten. They sure deserve it . It may b e a 1 to1,000 ch ance tha t a bomb would ever g o off but if oneever does I'm sure glad to know that Security will bearound. They sure are downcast around this school(mostly due to ad ministration) but I'll bet that if theyhad more freedom nobody would laugh anymore. And the way this bomb scare was handled provesho w lucky we a r e . S o get with it Mercyhurst an d let'swatch out at what w e laugh at!!!Sincerely, I fNumber 1 Security F an

Statistics indicate thatInterdisciplinary courses atMercyhurst have come a longwAy. *So far this, ten ID courseshave been given. Resultsfrom students and faculty arevery positive. Intersession IDcourses carried out their ownevaluation, and the courseswon high ratings. | JBut the history of IDcourses showsj that thissuccess has not come easily. With little more than asummer of5 preparation, thefirst ID courses got off theground in 1970 as team efforts. Students reported likingthe variety in professors andsome early courses weresuccessful. *Thenjthe noveltyjfwore off.The second year around, some courses w ere weak anastudents complained. A fewfaculty members gotfburnedin their efforts to form teams.Division chairmen were oftencool towards surrendering afaculty , member forsomething beyond their ownbaliwick. , Word went outamong J the students that\IDcourses were not worthwhile. But the faculty by and largestood convinced that J thecourses were a c good idea.New efforts were made. Theteam requirement wasdropped. An adequatelyprepared faculty member got

the green light to go it alone. After a hard road, modest.signs of success are encouraging. They indicate thatthe idea has acquired somematurity. Edges - havesmoothed, and some of thebrashness of a new thing hasgone.Furtherm ore, this has beendone'because of genuinecoop eration! from manyfaculty members. In astatement on the problems heencountered, the Dean ofOklahoma City U niversity!where faculty spent two yearspreparing interdisciplinarycourses, wrote that he wouldnot advise trying for aprogram 'without a grant. The program at Mercyhursthad no grant; in fact, it hadthe most minimal of funds. The regular faculty havecarried the great part of theload. Films and library additions have been hard tocome by and still facultymembers worked to preparecourses and carry them out.The good reports this yearare a welcome relief after'arough road. And credit is dueto the faculty who contributedand thanks are due to thestudents who did not get hungup on pastTreports. The IDprogram can and will make adistinct contribution to theCollege curriculum.

H U N G E R D A Y S U C C E S SHunger day at- the collegewas a day of surprises,)mostof which were very pleasant. The day was developed* tohelp raise the consciousnessof the campus to the hungerproblem. Activities includeda symbolic poverty meal heldin the cafeteria, and collections for Catholic ReliefServices. 4The best surprise was theresponse given I to thecollections. Receipts that dayamounted to $123.00. Duringthe Week another $48.00 wascontributed, including $19.27donated by members of thedivision of Home Economicswho fasted > and donated themoney they would have spenton lunch. Many peoplestopped to talk to thevolunteers collecting* moneyand a high 1 percentage gavesomething; One family inwhich the parents are Mercyhurst* students heldf afamily conference anddecided to have ; cheesesandwiches fori supper thatnight. This saved $6.41cwhichthey contributed to the effort. All the money collected wentto Catholic Relief Services toaid in the*, battle againsthunger, i * [ j|J Equally successful was thesymbolic poverty meal in theCafeteria. The residents hada - reduced meal whichresulted in a savings of $64.48.Keith Crouse of SAGA

translated the $64.48 into acarload of foodstuffs whichwere given to the Em maushouse soup kitchen in, Erie. The carload --included 50pounds of potatoes, cannedvegetables, canned soups, jars of peanut butter, cans ofpork and beans. SisterCarolyn, from the soup kitchen, was very * grateful*forthe gift. * I 7 i There were a few unpleasant surprises during thesymbolic meal. Some peoplewere upset that there werenot third and fourth helpingsallowed. A few o thers, m ostlythe 40 per cent who had notsigned the hunger petition, objected to the meal as imposing on their rights: peoplewho think this way mightconsider that the greatestrights are those to thenecessities of life. For manythe| basics I in life are stillluxuries out of their reachunless those who have muchrecognize an obligation toshare which is based onjustice and not just on charity.& The Campus Ministry officewould like to thank those whohelped make the day a success. We appreciate thesupport of SAGA :> andespecially Keith Grouse'sadvice and patience. We alsoacknowledge the people whohelped withj the hunger

petition and the collection ofmoneyMike Carrig, KevinCook, Valerie Scherrange,Barb Blessing and JeffreyBest. Lastly, a thanks to theMercyhurst Community fortheir generosity .and a gentlereminder, that the hungerproblem is still with us.
