C L O S E T C E N S O R S U N F A I R T A C T I C Si; In any m icrocosm, a variety of people is likelyto be found. But lately, I've become aware thatMercyhurst has an overabundance of sniveling, opinionated, cowards. I'm speaking of thosefaculty, administrators, and students whosomehow believe that God has died and left themb o s s . fLI personally am becoming very weary of thoseat the College who believe it their right to con

fisca te a newspaper because they believe onearticle to be offensive. Those types of tac tics areneither fair nor mature and indeed smack ofNazism. I fI personally am disgusted upon hea ring from afellow student that a faculty member disagreed

with an article in The Merciad an d proceeded totake 45 minutes of her science class to derogatethe credibility of the staff. She didn't notify thestaff of her grievance, she merely felt it herplace to destructively criticize. \ ' '11 abhor the actions of those who maliciously tryto subvert the programs of anyone with whomthey disagree. Very rarely do those of this ilk tryto resolve their differences and state theiropinions in a fair and open way. ,It is no wonder that most of the letters to theeditor come in to The Merciad requesting "namewithheld" privileges. It is no wonder apathyreigns supreme. Why S should anyone subjectthemself or their ideas to these forms of unfair

I an editorialoppression?????????? At an academicinstitution there is no place for suppression of thepress. At a Christian institution there is no place forsomeone who ideologically disagrees withanother to resort to back-stabbing.At an acad emic institution there is no place forsomeone to sulk through the halls violentlyripping down announcements of programs whosesubject he opposes.I say this to all you self-appointed closetcensors if you don't have the courage to personally espouse your actions and beliefs, expectlittle more than to be regarded an idiot - full ofsound an d fury signifying nothing.

H U R S T W E I G H S ! A B O R T I O N I S S U EEditor's N ote: It is often times the unpleasant taskof the newspaper journalist to report on very ex-plosive and controversial issues when the possibilityof being violently attacked exists on both sides. B ut itis of equal importance to report situationslas theyexist with a minimal amount of bias and a maximumamount of accurate observation. .?On Thursday, January 23, in the coffeeshop of theStudent Union, a very tense situation existed. As

previously advertised, a pro-abortion ffilm waspresented to the Mercyhurst student body by G ret-chen Krampf,|a senior on^the Student SexualityCouncil. But in view of the fact that this is a Catholicinstitution, the opportunity for an equal response bythe pro-life organization was made available. So, inaddition to the pro-abortion film J there was a slideshow depicting the stand of the pro-life organizationon the right to life by Mrs. Susan Stroh. JAt the meeting, there were also various otherpeople involved in the "Pennsylvanians for HumanLife" movement, who had just returned from a tripto Washington >to petition for a change in the constitutional decision on abortion to once again prohibitabortions on demand. There was also a sizeablerepresentation of the student body. W? j j , |Unfortunately, the meeting got somewhat out ofhand. First of all, it is important to note that bothsides 1 were given ? equal rightsto express* theiropinions, and any questions^or comments from thestudents in the assembly were welcomed. But, as inany serious and controversial discussion, manypeople are bound to become very em otional and upsetby seemingly personal attacks. Then again, in thissituation, it was not the individual who was beingconstantly challenged but the ISSUE. |At the very climax of this heated interplay, a manin a dark suit stood up and quoted the church lawinvolving this abortion issue which quite clearlystates that anyone who has an abortion or is in any

No, the Jolly (Srccii (Slant is not. as rumored, opening anoutlet store in the Mercyhurst Learning Resource Center(|,KC>! J

way involved in performing an abortion will be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. To manypeople this seemed^ to be a very strong, tactlessstatement which was entirely out of line. But in viewof the fact that Mercyhurst is a Christian institution, this comment which indeedlis very powerful, mustalways be a serious consideration in the minds of theCatholic studen t faced with this controversy. In the enDue to thejarge number of* day students, twostudents will be assigned to usemost of the boxes. On Monday, February 3, Tuesday, February 4, an dWednesday, February 5, the mailboxes | will beassigned. It is necessary for each day studentdesiring a box to come down to the mailroom in thebasement of Preston to find out their box number, combination, and whom they will be sharing theirmailbox with. Any questions will be answered at thattime by Jean Coffey. '&

Well, the big story of ithispast week, ibelive it or not,was not the resignation ofCoach Fox as head basket ballcoachv The real story is thereasons why Fox resigned. The immediate reason w asthought to .have been poorhealth, as was indicated in a[jremature article by Jack,'olancy in Saturday's Times. But Coach F o x quicklydispelled it hat in a hastilycalled press conference bysaying it was one of the manythings that led up to that day.But even now, a week later, the questions of "what reallyhappened," ar e still beingasked. |Now if you think I'm goingto answer all of the vague andmysterious questions, then goback to reading the terrificErie Times sports page andfind out how boring sports canreally be. What I will do is tellyou what I think, and if youdon't like it,you can lump it,take it out and dump i tFirst of all, I always felt acoaching change w a seminent, although not thissudden. I thought Coach Foxwould step down at the end ofthis season, following his firstclass of freshmen out thedoor, but not ;because helacked anything in coaching, actually it may nave been Justthe opposite. There are Innateproblems with a new programsuch as ours, and they're tenfold when one new man runsthe show. Coach Fox was incharge of 4 scheduling,

by Garrett Kenilworthextent, the Lakers Club, and,oh yes. he also, coached theBasketball team, liSo when coach Fox said."the heat gets too hot. got outof the kitchen," he not onlymeant in the coaching but therest of -the variables of theprogram that were wood inthe fire. ,In other words, I believe theresignation w a s a com*"binat ion of things, which havebeen sneaking up on Fox sincethe day he took the job here. ? :Because Coach Fox did howown recruiting, ha got personally involved with hisplayers. Thus, when the teamwas under fire, Fox felt it.When th e students startedcriticizing-the team, of late, for partying too much betoregames and breaking schoolregulations, well, Fox took itto heart. 11 showed,

When the team overspent, which it has, or travellingarrangements go t screwedup, again Fox took the heat. There is a lot more Involved ina new basketball programthan meets the eye and CoachFox had the foresight to knowwhen to step down. The real deep facts behindit may never.*come out. Onething that can't be denied,Dick Fox did a great jobbuilding th e basketballprogram here at* Mercyhurstand should be;i congratulatedand praised for that. Now he'sgoing to work on the overallsports program here and Ihope Dick Fox does as good a

Well now, Coach Markey'sin a helluva position He camein with a bang and asserted anew wave of discipline on theteam by suspending JesseCampbell for oner game andMike Molnar for two. ?The first loss under CoachMarkey came quickly, losingin overtime to Salem onMonday night* But the gamewas a great one and besidesSmoke Jones playing super.Steve Albert played hi s firstlet!onmieie gaiiexcellent job.game and did anI even sa wbasketball players refusingbeer at parties this week.Things may be looking up forbasketball and the entiresports program at Mercyhurst, ' .>':

In girls basketball action.the Lakerettes crushedJamestown CommunityCollege 7.1 to 49. In as excltlna basketball game assee, Mary Drummond ayou1 . . , . - l e dwell rounded group of scorerswith 28 points. Drum mond'shot outside shooting brokedown the Jay hawks stingyzone defense and it was clearsailing from then on. JerrySica also got hot from theoutside and added a fewsteals to help breakJamestown's back early inthe game, iOur girls play excitingbasketball that Is a lot oi funto watch. So why don't we seeif we can get more people upto watch, or would you rather

In the second edition of this column we intend to lend ahelping hand to the Meatball sports editor's Hockey column. We feel that after last Saturday's exciting victory over atough Strong Vincent squad it's about time for a littleHockey recognitioa E&We stated last week that we would report the sports as wesaw it happen. Well, we weren't seeing too well JastSaturday night, but we'll try our best to relay the facts as wesaw them, through empty beer mugs. fA huge crowd appeared at the Glenwood Forum to greetthe 38th Street Bullies as they skated onto the ice. Wethought it would be a tough n ight for the Bullies when Frank(Fats) G arwol almost broke his stick and his n eck by fanning on an easy practice shot, all which had Strong Vincentfans and players showing signs of relief., |The plan worked perfectly though, because, following theface dff, the Bullies looked as though they would ska te awaywith it as Joe (Dapper) Dolan, O'Polka'ed the puck into thenet with his eyes closed. The team then puckered around fora while before S.V. tied the score to end the first period; ft*Since Peter Puck failed to show for his intermission show, the teams quickly faced off again, this time with S.V. applying the pressure. They got lucky and scored after a hotlycontested stretch of time which saw Rut go to the penalty fortripping and Smacky Baxter for backing out of a fight. With S.V. seemingly in full control of the game, Terry(Flamingo) Sullivan tied the score* with a shot that surprised Terry as well as the S.V. goaltender. This set thestage for an exciting final period of action. B Wt. J;The Bullies, probably helped by all the foreign newspapermen in the pressbox smoking that foreign tobacco, came outsky high for the final period. Rut put the game away for theBullies with a slapshot Bobby Hull would have been proudof.President Frank (Uncle Jackson) Barry, trying to keephis Koehler secret, failed to see too much action because theteam thought! that since the rink was made out? of theoverflowing beer from the stands, he would eat up the ice.Jim (Meatball) Marzano, scrapping for all the gusto hecould get, got a good taste of the action, seeing h is face wasin the rink most of?his time on the ice. Ed (Inchworm)Inscho simply stunk.? Bob (Cathy) fDartnel impressed thenumerous scouts present from the Ice Capades while John(Hollow leg) Daley finally proved he was a dedicatedathlete by not joining the beer drinkers in the stands.Last Saturday actually proved to be a most excitingsports day without the boob tube or the addition of a men'svarsity basketball game. We sincerely wish to congratulatethe Lakerettes for an excellent display of basketball.|lt's ashame you haven't had a proper facility for practice or elseSt. Bonaventure would have, literally, been?blown off thecourt. J gbHockey is a reality at Mercyhurst in the eyes of theplayers who dish out their own budget, and fans whosenumber becomes larger each week..,We can only look to thefuture and guess that Hockey will become a club or varsitysport. But in order for this to occur, you the players and fansmust keep your determination equal to last Saturday'sperformance. Good luck and keep up the good work.Jacque Ro tFlaming Himorrois |
