Volume 44, Issue 1 January 8, 2014 The Messenger Recycled paper uses 64 percent less energy than making paper from virgin wood pulp and can save many trees. Eve- ry ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees. Approximately 1-billion-trees worth of paper is thrown away every year in the U.S. Half a million trees must be cut down to produce each week's Sunday newspapers. Every year, 14 billion pounds of trash is dumped into the oceans. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1 million sea creatures every year. The amount of wood and paper thrown away annually is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years. We use seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2 billion trees per year! Recycling every newspaper would save about 250 million trees each year. Unfortu- nately, only 27 percent of all American newspapers are recycled. The average individual throws away approximately four pounds of garbage every day and uses about 12,000 gallons of water every year The Messenger newsletter is available online (in full color) at www.ljfumc.org. Immediately following each publication date, The Messenger newsletter is sent out as an attachment (in full color) to the Weekly News Brief email. It costs First Church several thousand dollars per year to print and mail The Mes- senger to everyone on the current newsletter mailing list. A NEW APPROACH TO THE NEW YEAR

I just had a revelation. All my life I have focused on the New Year as a time for resolutions…for pulling

myself up by my bootstraps and getting it right this time…of looking to see what’s wrong with me and

determining to change those things in the coming year. Of course, it rarely works out that way. Oh, I

can find plenty of things wrong with myself…it’s the follow-through that’s the problem. By the end of

January I have one more thing to add to my “what’s wrong with me” list…I can’t keep a resolution!

But this year, in my devotional time, I was struck by this thought: maybe the New Year isn’t so much a

time to make resolutions as it is a time to thank God for his unfailing grace and forgiving love. This

year, instead of listing all the things that are wrong with me and determining to change them, I’m going

to list what’s wrong with me, and then thank God that He forgives me and loves me anyway. Try it….

What’s wrong with me…I am forgiven! Praise God!

What’s wrong with me…I am forgiven! Praise God!

For each thing on your “resolution” list, simply thank God for His patience, His forgiveness, and His

grace. Then ask Him to give you the grace to overcome those flaws in the coming year. Start with the

forgiveness…pray for the grace…and let the Holy Spirit guide and change you.

Hmm…something to think about.

In the name of Jesus Christ, YOU ARE FORGIVEN!! Thanks be to God!

Forgiveness, Grace and Peace,

Lynne

KNOWLEDGE - SIMPLE OR COMPLEX Life can be simple or complex. Simple things are ordinary, plain, and effortless. A complex life is elabo-rated, hard to understand, and complicated. The Bible says: All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

( 2 Timothy 3:16 - New Living Translation NLT) God is the source of truth. In order to know the truth, we have to read His word. Knowledge is discov-ering something new so you can be better at whatever you do. So I ask a simple question in this new year. Do you want to get closer to God and really understand the knowledge that only He can give us? Then let's learn about God together. Join a Bible study, read the Bible more, come to Sunday School , and find a friend to visit with. Nowadays life can be complicated with all the choices and activities we have, but God only asks for your love and your obedience. Come join us each Sunday to discover Knowledge- God's way!!!! Week 1 - Jesus seeking knowledge Luke 2:41-52 Week 2 - John the Baptist dedicating his life to God John 1:19-42 Week 3 - Jesus being tempted by Satan Luke 4: 1-13 Week 4 - Jesus story about two men building on a strong foundation Matthew 7:24-29 What are you going to choose in 2014? A Simple or Complex life??? I know I want to follow Jesus - it's that simple. I want to show others His love. Praising God Always, Kimberly Bowers Children's Ministry Director

Blessings from our children… Thank you to all who helped make our Christmas season so special at First Church!! It was a blessing to see the excitement and love in the children's faces as we presented our Christmas play, and the retelling of the Christmas story on Christmas Eve at the Family Christmas service. I want to especially thank Kim Copeland for helping to direct the play, Kim Lee for being at the practices and providing hot chocolate/cookies on Christmas Eve. Thank you Coach DeAtley and Ron Engle for being the voice of God during the play.
