Does it mean, as some have suggested, that we are similar in spiritual orientation? Or is it that, as oth- ers have proposed, we share the special image of God’s moral discretion? Only one word is needed: Christ. “...Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). “He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all crea- tion” (Colossians 1:15). “He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:2-3). “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). The New Testament writers firmly believed that Jesus Christ was the definition of God’s image. Humanity was created in and through Christ. Created In God’s Image

“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him…” (Genesis 1:27).

Many have attempted to define this perplexing phrase. What is “the image of God,” and what does it mean that humanity was created in that image? Does it mean, as some have suggested, that we are similar in spiritual orientation? Or is it that, as oth-ers have proposed, we share the special image of God’s moral discretion? Or perhaps mankind bears the divine image in the sense that we have been given a place of au-

thority and dominion over his creation?

While each of the previous interpretations are reasonable, there is a deeper expla-nation of what God’s image is that easily supersedes all other attempts. As is often the case, we must only allow the inspired text to interpret itself.

How does Scripture define the image of God in which man was created? Only one

word is needed: Christ.

“...Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4).

“He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all crea-tion” (Colossians 1:15).

“He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:2-3).

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through

him and for him” (Colossians 1:16).

The New Testament writers firmly believed that Jesus Christ was the definition of God’s image. Humanity was created in and through Christ. He is Creation’s beginning and end; our blueprint and our completion; our aim and our potential; our source and

our destination; our start and our goal. He is the Alpha and Omega.

“So God created man in Christ, in Christ he created him…”

...Are you bearing his image?

It is not the ship in the water but the water in the ship that

sinks it. So it is not the Christian in the world but the world

in the Christian that constitutes the danger.

Anything that dims my vision of Christ, or takes away my

taste for Bible study, or cramps my prayer life, or makes

Christian work difficult, is wrong for me, and I must, as a

Christian, turn away from it.

Gaining Spiritual Maturity

God uses his Word, people, and circumstances to mold us. All three are indispensable for character develop-ment. God's Word provides the truth we need to grow, God's people provide the support we need to grow, and circum-stances provide the environment to practice Christlikeness. If you study and apply God's Word, connect regularly with other believers, and learn to trust God in difficult circumstances, I guarantee you will become more like Jesus.

Many people assume all that is needed for spiritual growth is Bible study and prayer. But some issues in life will never be changed by Bible study or prayer alone. God uses people. He usually prefers to work through people rather than perform miracles so that we will depend on each other for fellowship. He wants us to grow together.

In many religions, the people considered to be the most spiritually mature and holy are those who isolate them-selves from others in mountaintop monasteries, uninfected by contact with other people. But this is a gross misunder-standing. Spiritual maturity is not a solitary, individual pursuit!

Looking at the people and the stories of the Bible, we see God choosing active individuals and calling them to live out His will in their lives. While times of isolation and meditation are something we can benefit from, our Christian walk should be exactly that, constant progress towards Christ.

You cannot grow to be Christ-like in isolation. You must be around other people and interact with them. You need to be part of a church and community. Why? Because true spiritual maturity is all about learning to love like Jesus, and you can't practice being like Jesus without being with other people.

So in an effort to be our spiritual best, may we all use God’s Word, His people, and our circumstances to attain spir-itual maturity, especially those like myself who are still babes in Christ.

In Him, Chase
