If you thought that only humans use a magnetic compass to know the direction, you will be surprised to know that even butterflies use compass, according to new research. Each autumn, millions of monarch butterflies use a sophisticated navigation system to transverse 2,000 miles from breeding sites across the eastern United States to a new habitat in central Mexico.Monarchs use a light-dependent, inclination magnetic compass to help them orient southward during migration, the findings showed."Our study reveals another fascinating aspect of the monarch butterfly migratory behaviour," said senior study author Steven Reppert from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the US."Greater knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the fall migration may well aid in its preservation, currently threatened by climate change and by the continuing loss of milkweed and over-wintering

habitats," he added."Our study shows that monarchs use a sophisticated magnetic inclination compass system for navigation similar to that used by much larger-brained migratory vertebrates such as birds and sea turtles," said co-author Robert Gegear, assistant professor of biology and biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the US.Monarchs use a time-compensated sun compass in their antenna to help them make their 2,000 mile migratory journey to over-wintering sites.During the absence of daylight cues, such as under dense cloud cover, migrants have been,

surprisingly, seen flying in the expected southerly direction.Given the ability of monarch cryptochromes (CRY), a class of proteins that are sensitive to ultraviolet A/blue light, to restore a light-dependent magnetic response in CRY-deficient Drosophila, Reppert and colleagues suspected that monarchs also possessed a light-dependent magnetic compass."For migratory monarchs, the inclination compass may serve as an important back up system when daylight cues are unavailable," the researchers said. The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

How does your computer recall things and perform logical operations? It is all thanks to the "moving" metal particles in memory components, finds new research.Researchers have shown that the metal particles in memristors and "resistive random access memory", or RRAM - computer components that combine logic and memory functions - do not stay put in one place as previously thought. The finding has broad implications for the semiconductor industry and could pave the way for smaller, more efficient chips."Most people have thought you can't move metal particles in a solid material," said lead researcher Wei Lu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Michigan in the US."In a liquid and gas, it's mobile and people understand that, but in a solid we don't expect this behaviour. This is the first time it has been shown," Lu added. The results could lead to a new approach to chip design - one that involves using fine-tuned electrical signals to lay out integrated circuits after they are fabricated.

And it could also advance memristor technology, which promises smaller, faster, cheaper chips and computers inspired by biological brains in that they could perform many tasks at the same time.Researchers exposed the metal layer of their memristor to an electric field. They observed the metal atoms becoming charged ions, clustering with up to thousands of others into metal nanoparticles, and then migrating and forming a bridge between the electrodes at the opposite ends of the dielectric material.

They demonstrated this process with several metals, including silver and platinum. And depending on the materials involved and the electric current, the bridge formed in different ways."We succeeded in resolving the puzzle of apparently contradicting observations and in offering a predictive model accounting for materials and conditions," said Ilia Valov from Electronic Materials Research Centre Julich in Germany."Also the fact that we observed particle movement driven by electrochemical forces within dielectric matrix is in itself a sensation," he added.

While most people believe education, upbringing, and self-control are major contributors to a person's savings habits, researchers have found that people save more when they feel powerful. In five studies, the

researchers found that when made to feel powerful, the amount of money someone is willing to save for the future increases."People who feel powerful use saving money as a means to maintain their current state of power," said

Emily N. Garbinsky from Stanford University in the US.In one study, some participants were made to feel powerful and were asked to sit in a tall chair.Other participants were made to feel powerless and

were asked to sit on a low ottoman chair. All participants were asked to respond to some questions and were then given the option to either collect their study compensation in cash or to put it in a lab savings

account. Results showed that the individuals who sat in the tall chair saved more of their money than those who sat on the low ottoman chair. The findings appeared in the Journal of Consumer Research.

How happy you are in your marriage affects your heart in more ways than previously thought as researchers have found that unhappy marital interaction is linked to thicker carotid arteries and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease." G r o w i n g e v i d e n c e s u g g e s t s that the quality and patterns of one's social relationships may be linked with a variety of health outcomes, including heart disease," said Thomas Kamarck, professor of psychology at University of Pittsburgh in the US."The contribution of

this study is in showing that these sorts of links may be observed even during the earliest stages of plaque development (in the carotid artery)," Kamarck added. Those in unhappy marital interactions may have an 8.5 percent greater risk of suffering heart attack or stroke than those with

a surfeit of good feelings, the findings showed. The study included 281 healthy, employed, middle-aged adults who were married or living with a partner in a marital-like relationship. Their interactions were

monitored hourly over the course of four days, with the partners rating their

    i n t e r a c t i o n s as positive or

negative.Carotid artery thickness was also measured. Those partners reporting more negative interactions were found to have thicker carotids. The study appeared in the journal Psychosomatic

    Medicine.

Epilepsy struck my life when I was barely five months old. After living with this syndrome for more than four decades, my third neurologist, Dr. Prithika Chary, cured me from all kinds of seizures through neurosurgery. Nothing extraordinary, one might say. But, for me, this has been an extraordinary reversal in my life following a brain surgery. Epilepsy devastated my life and career because of different kinds of seizures that occurred at any time and any place. The drawbacks of epilepsy like grasping and recalling took a huge beating on my school, college and profession life. Epilepsy brought lot of difficulties and embarrassment from others and became a burden not only to me throughout my life but it also affected many people, my parents, relatives, society, superiors and colleagues of all the organizations where I worked. I took up secretarial course when I was rejected from sales and marketing jobs, because epilepsy prevented me from driving. Very often I was humiliated by my superiors and colleagues at work place. I was fired from jobs because my employers did not understand my difficulties and behavior and had poor understanding of my disease and its drawbacks. My ambition in life is to create awareness for epilepsy and counsel those who fear surgery, as neurosurgery could be a cure for epilepsy. As a first step, I am sharing my experiences with epilepsy and my road to recovery

in my autobiography “My Experience with Epilepsy”. Epilepsy had traumatized my life before surgery. Recurrent acute panic attacks made my life miserable whenever I was at home, workplace and whenever I went outside. I often lost consciousness and even found myself in different places when I regained my consciousness. Society does not understand the trauma caused by epilepsy and the different kinds of seizures that can occur at anytime and anywhere. I have had panic attacks and uneasiness while crossing main roads choked with traffic. On some occasions I have spoken without understanding the

circumstances. Society stigmatizes us, but even with minor adjustments, we can be excellent professionals. Having surgery for my epilepsy was the best decision I have ever made. Vanishing of loss of consciousness and panic attack after surgery was like living again and I feel like a new person. My life after surgery has improved tremendously that I need not worry about the next seizure. Surgery brought huge revolutionary changes both in my mind and life and I feel very good most of the time. The peace of mind I experienced after surgery was incredible. The result of the surgery for me is nothing less than a miracle. Neurosurgery put me back on the track and gave me my

life back. The anecdotes in my book seek to give insight into the condition and inspire people with epilepsy and their families, care givers and physicians and society at large for a better life. Despite these difficulties and epilepsy hindrance I lived my life to the fullest and inspired all those around me with my humour and compassion. I showed everyone I met that life is made by how we choose to live with it, despite our circumstances, not because of them. Sending a message about surgery benefits through this book will open the eyes of the blind and help them to see that one day they too can follow my steps and lead others out of darkness. I now want to see smile on the face of many people who have been completely lost. For the entire world to know more about epilepsy would be my “Magic of a Moment”. I can be contacted at 9941237131 or [email protected].

Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat is not pleased with her link-up with Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas. After being held responsible for his split from wife Melanie Griffith, she says don't pry into her personal life. Mallika, who entered the Indian film industry in 2003 with "Khwahish" , was recorded on video dancing with the "Desperado" star during a party in Cannes two years ago.“I remember when they danced and they had a lot of PDA (Public Disply of Affection), he had a lot of public affection with Mallika,” Los Angeles stylist Ivan Bitton was quoted by radaronline.com as saying. “He was saying ‘God you’re so beautiful,’ like a horndog would do talking to a prey,” he added. After the report, the “Murder” actress tweeted, Thursday: “LEAVE ME ALONE!”When contacted by another international site eonline.com on her relationship with Banderas, who along with Griffith recently announced that they were ending their marriage after 18 years, Mallika said: "Antonio Banderas is a wonderful man, a great dancer and an acquaintance of mine.”"I did not go on any vacation with him, and I'm sorry he's going through a divorce,” she was further

quoted by eonline.com.She went on to say that Bitton was hired only for the international film festival."Ivan Bitton is not my best friend. I hired him as a stylist at Cannes and then fired him. I'm sure he released the video. "I don't know what he's even talking about now. I haven't been in touch with Ivan since I fired him. Whatever he's saying about me is ridiculous,” she said.Hailing from Rohtak in Haryana, Mallika went international with Jackie Chan-starrer 2005 film "The Myth", and then did Jennifer Lynch's "Hisss" and William Dear's "Politics of Love".Her first visit to the Cannes fest was with Jackie Chan for the promotion of "The Myth

Actor Salman Khan, also known for his charity work, is now set to help his fans and others find jobs through his site beinghumanworkshop.com. He took to Twitter Wednesday and posted: “Appna Face book is not just for time pass, use it to find work.

beinghumanworkshop.com #Beinghumanjobs. Kaam ki cheez." “Everyone on my fb page who dn't hve a job, Ive spoken to my frnds to hire n employ them, obviously u need to fulfill the requirement,” the “Dabangg” star further tweeted.Salman said he took the step

as many fans shared their unemployment stories with him. “Lots of fans hv been saying that they don't hv any job, so thought of this, superb if it works n u get jobs. Vil b v happy for u all,” he wrote."Being Human" is Salman's charitable organization which works for the underprivileged.

Newcomer Abhinay Vaddi, grandson of legendary actors Savitri and Gemini Ganesan, agreed to play mathematics genius Srinivasa Ramanujan in the upcoming Tamil-English biopic "Ramanujan" because he felt it's "the best debut" he could get as an actor."When I decided to act, I wanted to only work in art-based films. After my first film in Telugu, I waited for two years to get an art-based project but I couldn't even find one script. When I finally got 'Ramanujan', I felt it's the best debut I could get as an actor," Abhinay told in an interview here."I'm not against commercial cinema because you can't have much of a choice in our industry. If you want to

be versatile as an actor, you need to do different films. 'Ramanujan' came to me when I was least expecting it and I realised I need to be open to all kinds of cinema," he added. Many would not call "Ramanujan" a dream debut for a newcomer from a star family, but Abhinay thinks otherwise."Everybody wants a star-studded launch with a successful director and popular cast. I feel all that's there in this film as well. It's being directed by a National Award-winning filmmaker, features a host of very popular and experienced actors and above all I get to play Ramanujan, for which top Tamil actors vied," he said. Directed by Gnana Rajasekaran, "Ramanujan" is the story of

the mathematician from his early days in Kumbakonam to Cambridge University, London. Abhinay didn't sign the movie because he got an opportunity to play Ramanujan, but because he also got to work with a celebrated filmmaker, who has carved a niche with his biopics such as "Bharathi" and "Periyar"."I agreed because I got an opportunity to work with an acclaimed director as

well. 'Bharatia' interested me a lot because it had its commercial elements such as songs and romance even though it was a biopic. I liked the way he handled the story," he said.A biopic usually involves a lot of research, but Abhinay was asked to blindly follow his director's instructions."After I was narrated the story, I researched and came across so many things about Ramanujan

that was not part of the story I heard. I went back and told my director about it but he asked me to stop reading from other sources as he feared it would confuse me," Abhinay said.Abhinay, who comes from a Telugu speaking family, had problems with the "diction of the Tamil language"."I got comfortable with the acting part because my director after first two days of shooting asked me to continue what I was doing. He didn't want Ramanujan's character to be overly expressive and dramatic. He wanted me to be docile and act subtly," he added.A national level table tennis champion, Abhinay was never nurtured or forced into acting."From the age of five, my parents put me on to sports. They wanted me to be a

professional sportsman and so they enrolled me into badminton and table tennis. I was never pushed into acting because I come from a lineage of actors," he said."Later on, when I was 27, it dawned upon me that I had tried everything in life. I worked in a 9 (a.m) to 5 (p.m.) job, worked with my brother in advertising and played sports. I realised since I come from a family of actors, I may as well try it," Abhinay added.A student of SRM University, Film Acting, has got an opportunity by his own Professor, director of Ramanujam Flim. Kalai Kumaran wishes the director “every success with this movie and in the future”. As told by Mr. Kalai, he can reached @ 98411 70103.

Control your web-surfing urge while studying as using smartphones or iPads in the classroom for non-academic purposes may academically harm even the smartest kid.A new study has found that all students, regardless of intellectual ability, had lower exam scores the more they used the internet for non-academic purposes such as reading the news, sending emails and posting Facebook updates."Students of all intellectual abilities should be responsible for not letting themselves be distracted by use of the internet," explained Susan Ravizza, associate professor of psychology at Michigan State University (MSU).Ravizza and her colleagues studied non-

academic internet use in an introductory psychology class at MSU with 500 students. The findings also showed that students discounted the effects of internet use on academic performance, reinforcing past findings that students have poor awareness of how their smartphones and laptops affect learning."This might be because internet use is a different type of multitasking, in that it can be so engaging," Ravizza added.Although it is nearly impossible to attempt to ban smartphones or other electronic devices from lecture halls, an awareness drive can help students lower their use of internet for non-academic purpose. The study appeared online in the journal Computers and Education.

Global number of out-of-school children aged 6-11 is still as high as 58 million, showing little overall improvement since 2007, new UNESCO data show. But some countries buck the trend and show that rapid progress is possible."Combined with UNESCO's recent news that aid to education has fallen yet again, the lack of progress in reducing out of school numbers confirms our fears -- there is no chance, whatsoever, that countries will reach the goal of universal primary education by 2015," said UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova. The Education for All Global Monitoring Report (EFA GMR) released a new paper two weeks ago showing that, despite out of school numbers stagnating, aid to education has fallen by 10 percent since 2010. India has the fourth highest number of out-of-school children in the world, and the highest number of out-of-school adolescents. However, despite these high numbers India suffered the largest cuts in aid to basic education from 2010-2012 of any country in the world, according to the specialised agency of UN. "We cannot meet this news with further inertia. On the contrary, we must sound the alarm and mobilise the political will to ensure that every child's right to education is respected," Bokova said. The new global out-of-school figures show that around 43 percent of those out of school -- or 15 million girls and 10 million boys -- will probably never set foot in a classroom if current trends continue. This data will be presented at a press conference June 26 held during a pledging meeting organised by the Global Partnership for Education in Brussels, where donors and countries are expected to renew their commitment to get all children in school and learning. The lack of global progress is largely due to high population growth in sub-Saharan Africa, now home to more than 30 million out-of-school children. Most of these children will never start school and those who do are at risk of dropping out. Across the region, more than one in three children who entered the educational system in 2012 will leave before reaching the last grade of primary school. But a new policy paper highlights that

improvements are possible as 17 countries reduced their out-of-school populations by almost 90 percent in little over a decade by investing in positive actions such as abolishing school fees, introducing more relevant curricula and providing financial support to struggling families, said the specialised agency of the UN in a press release Wednesday. The paper also shows critical gaps in the education of older children aged 12-15. Globally, 63 million adolescents were out of school in 2012. Although numbers have fallen by nearly one-third since 2000 in South and West Asia, the region has the largest population of out-of-school adolescents at 26 million. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to 21 million out-of-school adolescents and their numbers will continue to grow if current trends continue. The paper includes analysis by the Education for All Global Monitoring Report showing that 17 countries, which accounted for about one-quarter of the global out-of-school population in 2000, have bucked the trend by reducing their out-of-school populations by 86 percent, from 27 million to less than four million, in little over a decade. In Nepal, for instance, 24 percent of children were out of school in 2000, but this rate fell to one percent by 2013. Morocco's out-of-school population fell by 96 percent over the same period. The analysis identifies six policies -- fee abolition, social cash transfers, increased attention to ethnic and linguistic minorities, increasing education expenditure, improving education quality and overcoming conflict -- that have brought about success in these countries and may offer useful lessons for others. "These countries face very different circumstances but all share the political will to bring about real change in education," said Bokova. "While they have brought about momentous change, their task is far from complete - they must now ensure that every child starts and finishes school while learning the relevant skills needed for a productive life. But today, others can learn from the experiences of countries like Burundi and Ghana: real progress is possible and we owe it to children to pursue it," said the director general of UN's specialised agency.

Three of the four Asian Football C o n f e d e r a t i o n (AFC)-member teams have already packed their luggage for their return home with only South Korea clinging to a slim chance of advancing to the next round at the ongoing World Cup.The latest setback for the Asian teams came Wednesday when Iran surrendered 1-3 to Bosnia-Herzegovina in Salvador in the last group round, lying bottom of Group F, reports Xinhua.Although the Iranians were eager to grab a victory and managed to score their first goal of the tournament, it was Bosnia that controlled the rhythm throughout the match.Iran coach Carlos Queiroz, who has confirmed his resignation, admitted the difference between Asian soccer and European soccer: "We tried our best and went up to the limit of our mental capacity, but today the experience of the opponents and the ability to play in Europe made a difference."On Tuesday, Japan were humiliated by Colombia 1-4 in the final round of Group C -- and thus leave the World Cup with just one point. Australia fared no better, losing all their three matches in Group B.So far in this World Cup, Asian teams are yet to score a win in 11 matches as the three draws and eight defeats are far below expectation. As the last matches of Group H kick off Thursday, South Korea remain the only Asian hope to qualify for

the round of 16. But for that to happen, South Korea have to win big against group leader Belgium and if Russia edges Algeria with a narrow victory.Going over World Cup history reveals that the Asian sides have hardly shared the limelight at the centre stage of the soccer gala.In Italy in 1990, neither the United Arab Emirates nor South Korea notched a win. At the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Saudi Arabia reached the knockout phase and four

years later Iran famously beat the United States in France in a group match. The most successful World Cup for the Asians came in 2002 when it was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan when South Korea reached the semi-finals on their home soil. Four years later, Australia's Socceroos reached the knockout phase in Germany.Judging their performance here, some opined there is still a long way for Asian soccer before it catches up with the American and European counterparts.

"Asian teams year after year keep making the same mistakes, so they'll never be able to be on the same level as Europe or South America," Queiroz said ascribing the defeat to the competition system, the training and organization."The officials persist in copying Europe and the gap is bigger and bigger," he added.Bora Milutinovic, who has coached five different teams, including China, at the World Cup, also believed that Asian teams were far behind in terms of tactics and creativity of players."Asian footballers seem to be produced by a machine, they play in the same way and lack of creativity. If Asians wouldn't reflect and thus make changes, they surely will be left behind in the future too," he said. However, some others hold that Asian teams are making progress and they have a chance to emerge as the strongest teams as long as they continue."If you look at South Korea, they're a little bit like us in that they're going through regeneration and looking to build. I think Japan are still a quality team... they just haven't been rewarded at this stage for the quality they have," said Ange Postecoglou, the coach of Australia. He added that the Socceroos hoped to come back in four years and would try to be one of the feared teams. "That goes for all the nations in our confederation, and that's the challenge for us over the next four years."

The Indian cricket board Thursday congratulated N. Srinivasan on becoming the first Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).Srinivasan has been suspended as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president by India's Supreme Court after being named in the IPL spot-fixing investigation.BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said Srinivasan's unanimous election as the ICC chairman will be key as India take the leadership position in world cricket."The responsibility of guiding the game in these challenging times could not have found a better leader than Srinivasan. The BCCI wishes to congratulate Srinivasan on being unanimously elected as the first chairman of the ICC for the period 2014-2016 of two years, post its historic restructuring," said Patel in a statement. "The restructuring of the ICC was an elaborate process undertaken by

its Board and had been discussed in great detail at various levels within the ICC. It is a proud and historic moment for Indian cricket, and on behalf of all the members of the BCCI, we wish him (Srinivasan) all the best," said Patel.Patel said that Srinivasan's election establishes the important role that the BCCI will essay and the responsibility it will take to work with other members during these days of growth."It is also imperative that all the stakeholders of Indian cricket stand united and support these endeavours, as we seek to play an important and definitive role in world cricket," he said.

Srinivasan is among 13 people named in the report of a court-conducted inquiry into spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Justice Mukul Mudgal headed the committee that inquired into corrupt practices in the sixth edition of the IPL last year.Srinivasan has been suspended by the Indian Supreme Court as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and senior board vice-president Shivlal Yadav is looking after day-to-day cricket administration while India's legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar was made in charge of the IPL.

Global search engine Google is offering unlimited storage, advanced audit reporting and new security controls for businesses through its new Drive service at $10 per month, the company said Thursday."As businesses want more control, security and visibility to check how files are shared, our new version of 'Drive for Work' offers unlimited storage for businesses at a nominal subscription,"

the company's Indian subsidiary said in a statement here.As a cloud storage service, Google Drive allows users to store documents, photos, videos in one place and access documents to create, share and collaborate from anywhere online."Though a workplace is full of files that capture the best ideas and the most productive collaborations, they (files) are not useful if users are unable to access

or share them effectively. The new Drive keeps all users' work safe and makes it easy to share," the statement noted.About 190 million users worldwide use Google Drive at home, office, school and work. Global firms such as Crate & Barrel, Seagate and HP

(Hewlett Packard) rely on Drive to work faster and collaborate better with their co-workers and customers. With the new audit view, users can see activity like moving, deleting or sharing a file within or outside the company. The new application (tool) for search and discovery covers all content stored in Drive, including documents, sheets and slides."Every year companies

create more data, adding megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. We are taking bytes out of conversation. For $10/user/month, businesses get unlimited storage for their employees and can store files up to 5 TB (terabyte) in size, which no desktop or laptop has a hard drive big enough to store a file of that size," the statement asserted. For security, all files uploaded to Drive will be encrypted from a user's

device to the search engine's platform and between the search engine's data centres and its servers."Editing office files is a click away from Drive on a user's computer, tablet or phone,a the statement added.Users will also have access to productivity apps (applications) like documents, sheets, slides, sites and Hangouts, enabling them to collaborate in more ways.

The Tamil Nadu government Thursday issued guidelines for the running of hostels for girls and young and working women like installation of closed circuit cameras, hiring of full-time security wardens, and registration with the collectorate, among others.

In a statement here, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the government has come out with the guidelines following the sexual assault of two girl students in a hostel in the state's Pollachi.

As per the guidelines, hostels should be operated in proper building with necessary sanctions and have good infrastructural facilities.

There should be separate hostels for boys and girls and, if for some reason, separate buildings are not available, then boys and girls should be housed in separate rooms.

Only women should be appointed as warden for hostels for young girls and women.

For those who are to be appointed as hostel warden and security personnel, prior police clearance has to be obtained. They should also undergo medical and psychological tests, the guidelines stipulate.
