Ray Brooks, a member and Executive Officer of the Silver City Gun Club died August 27, 2001. He was an active league shooter, NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, Range Officer, and an Advisor with the Meriden Police Explorers. Ray's friendly smile and encouraging words will be especially missed and remembered by his fiancée, Laurie, and all his friends at The Silver City Gun Club.

Tony Falco, a member of the Middletown Rifle & Revolver club, died November, 2001. Tony was a Golden Gloves and professional welterweight boxer, a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, and a retiree of Pratt & Whitney.

Russell Von Hagen, a member of the Middletown Rifle & Revolver club, died October 25

th, 2001. Russell was a veteran of the U.S. Army of the Korean War,

and retired from his own Middletown business. Russell was an avid outdoorsman, and an early participant in SCUBA.

Bob Longo, a member of the Bears team, died June 24th, 2001. Bob held advanced degrees in

Engineering, and was a retiree of Combustion Engineering. He was also the National Director of the International Martial Arts Kokondo Association and Chief Instructor at its headquarters. He had earned his 9

Tony Christina Award

Tony Christina Died May 19, 1968

Foreword

Tony Christina possessed outstanding qualities in the pursuit of his

avocation - Pistol shooting and competition: He was an even-tempered,

extremely dependable, honest and forthright individual. He was not one to

seek recognition in any way, for his endeavors, but rather was often

embarrassed with plaudits afforded him. Tony was rich in friends and

possessed a humility unparalleled in the league.

Qualifications

1. The person selected must have demonstrated an unstinting willingness

to help new shooters to achieve in their marksmanship endeavors.

2. A person who could never say “No” to any job, no matter how big or

how small, selected for him to accomplish.

3. A person possessing a ready smile, jovial word and a dependability,

second to none.

4. A person who would accept unequivocally, any office and fulfill any

position and attend any committee function assigned to him by his

fellow club and State organization members.

5. A person, who, on many occasions, doesn’t wait to be asked to do a job, but rather initiates the

endeavor himself for the betterment of the shooting fraternity, in general.

The Tony Christina Award in no way, conflicts with the coveted Arnold Goodwin Award. The Christina

award is not confined to Club functions, but rather encompasses the entire shooting fraternity throughout the

State of Connecticut and its connections with National events.

Late Shots

Stay tuned next year for a couple changes in the Met League Rules. In the January meeting this year, it was decided that the League would adopt the standard NRA classifications. I don’t think we will separate the High Masters from the Masters, so we will continue to use the Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, and Master classifications, but the National Match Course Averages given below will be used to classify shooters at the end of the 2002-2003 year. Some of the current Masters will be busted back down to Experts, etc.

Classification NRA NMC Average Master 285.00 – 300.00 Expert 270.00 – 284.99

Sharpshooter 255.00 – 269.99 Marksman 0.00 – 254.99

The other agreed change will be to adopt the standard NRA range command terminology – “alibi’s” will now become “re-fire’s”. The rules will be updated with the NRA range commands, and the new command phrases will be available for all teams.
