Dear Friends,

The dog days of summer have run their course until next year and fall is here! I hope you are enjoying thebalmy days and cooler temperatures of the season. Fall at St. Augustine’s—October to be specific—means the beginning our Stewardship campaign as well as our third annual Autumn Faire.

Soon, you will be receiving your stewardship packet in the mail, and we ask that you prayerfully consideryour commitment of money, time and talent to Saint Augustine’s. The theme for this year’s Stewardshipcampaign is “Rejoicing in God’s Grace.” Based on 1 Peter 4:10-11, we are encouraged to “serve oneanother with whatever gift each of you has received.”

Autumn Faire is just days away, and I am looking forward to Saturday, October 11. I hope you are aswell. As you know all profits from the Faire will go to Securus House, a safe haven in Clayton for bat-tered women, and Holy Comforter Church, a mission of the Diocese of Atlanta. This is just another wayfor us to “serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” I’m sure there will be some-thing at the Faire for everyone! We will have arts and crafts vendors, and community service and healthproviders—the American Red Cross Blood Mobile will be here again this year. If you have not yet com-mitted to donate blood, there is still time. There will be free dental check-ups for children, The GA CHIPProgram will offer free fingerprinting for children, and many more. The cooks from the ever-popular“Hamburger Heaven” are getting their grill ready to serve up some of the best burgers this side of Heaven. If you have not yet signed up to volunteer at the Faire, you can still do so. Sign-up sheets are in the ParishHall and in the Gathering Room

It has been said that St. Augustine’s is “The little church with a big heart.” Yes, we might be small, butmighty indeed! At a recent retreat, the vestry discussed plans that we hope will continue to attest to howmighty we can be when we all put our heads together to work in the vineyard. Once these plans are un-veiled, we will need the help of everyone to see them to fruition. We’ve also set new goals for 2009,which we are confident will be successful, again, with everyone on board. More details to follow.

See you in church and at the Faire!

Grace and peace,

Veronica Ridenhour

Senior Warden

What a great day we had on our 50th Anniversary Homecoming Sunday! The weather was great, theturnout was great, the food was great. It was great to have back with us as guest preacher The Rev.Terri Tilley Stanford. As the eleven o'clock service ended, she was truly surprised when we presentedher with a birthday cake! Thanks to LaUna Rozier-Moore, Parish Life Chair, and her team, the potluckluncheon was one of our best.

Have you seen the new Portrait Gallery in the hallway of the Founders' Hall? Framed photographs ofpresent and former bishops and clergy are displayed, along with a photo of Ida Baumgartner, the ladywho had the vision of an Episcopal parish in Clayton County back in 1958. The Portrait Gallery was aproject of the 50th Anniversary Committee. I wish to thank Robert Harrell for his excellent work onthis project.

The vestry had a very productive retreat last weekend. On Friday evening Veronica and Lorenzo Rid-enhour served us a delicious dinner in their home. Saturday morning we gathered in the parlor of St.John's, College Park, for our working and planning session. We left excited and energized. Details ofour meeting will be shared later. We have a fine vestry. We work hard, and we have a lot of fun!

Our annual Stewardship Campaign begins this Sunday, October 5. You should receive a stewardshipmailing this week. At St. Augustine's we think of stewardship as a celebration, not a chore. I look for-ward to celebrating stewardship with you in the weeks ahead!

One aspect of our stewardship focus will be an outreach project for Bethlehem Ministries in Haiti. Asyou know, Haiti has been hit especially hard by hurricanes this year. The people of Haiti live in direcircumstances to begin with, and these natural disasters have only added to their hardships. Severalyears ago I invited The Rev. Pere Bruno to preach and share with us his ministry at the school he estab-lished in Cap Haitian. Our October stewardship/outreach project will focus on Christmas boxes forBethlehem Ministries school children. Details will be shared this Sunday.

Finally, October 11 is Autumn Faire! Proceeds will go to Holy Comforter Church, a ministry of ourdiocese, and Securus House, a safe haven for battered women of Clayton County. Volunteer sign-upsheets are in the Parish Hall and the Gathering Room. We need lots of volunteers to make lots ofmoney and have lots of fun! This is our third Autumn Faire for outreach, and each year the celebra-tions gets better.

May the Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen us to be Christ's hands andheart in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity.

Thoughts on Stewardship

Victoria BuntinMember since 2006

Faithful stewardship reminds me of the story of the loaves and the fishes. When I give more to the church, God takeswhat I have left over and multiplies it. It defies all logic! Trusting and “Rejoicing in God’s Grace,” I give in faith andget back more in return.

Yvonne ChevannesMember since 2000

For me, Stewardship means giving of your time, talents, gifts and resources as God commanded us to do. Once circum-stances determine how these obligations are met and sometimes it may not be in the traditional way. Nevertheless, gladly“Rejoicing in God’s Grace,” whatever we give should be given from the heart...freely and without reservation.

Franklin DouglasMember since 2002

I believe that being a good steward in not just giving money. Giving service or helping those in need, in whatever waywe can, wherever we can, and as much as we can is perhaps the greatest way to demonstrate stewardship. In doing this,we share our gifts of time and talent “like good stewards” of God’s unending grace. We therefore, are doing as com-manded: “serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.”

God gives us more than He receives, so let us as Christians do what our conscience allows us to do and God will rewardus in many different ways.

In the September issue we mis-printed the name of the young manthat gave us his “Vision” for St.Augustine’s. His name is Alonzo. His family calls him Mikey.

Alonzo is will be 18 on November19th. He is an inspiration to ourparish!

Gre a t “ Vi s i o n ” !

In September, we have been thinking about Stewardship. We learned that moneyis important to pay the bills for the church and to help the needy and to give tomissions and outreach. Our time and talents are also a way to show God’s love. The children at St. Augustine’s obviously come from very loving homes becausethe following is how they express their sharing:

Their time is spent: Their talent is shared by:

“I helped my mom wash the plates” Art

“Help daddy” Singing

“Helped clean-up” Violin, draw, paint

“Help daddy wash” Drawing

“Helping my mom fix my bed” I am good at loving and drawing

“I love to help people” Dancing, cooking, singing

“Helping [Ms. Jordan] with papers” I play the guitar

“I helped my dad peel potatoes” I played my DC

“Went to McDonald’s” Dancing

“Watched TV with Dad” Playing video games

“I help mommy make my sippy”

“Take out the trash”

And their Treasure……………

My mom, dad, grandparents and everyone

The offering totals for the first three weeks of September from St.Augustine’s children totaled $14.45!!! Each child will begin receiving astatement of their contributions. St. Augustine’s is fortunate to have somany amazing children. Please let them know how much we value them.

Thank you,

Hallelujah! Our contributions year to date are right ontarget. Through the end of August we are less than onepercent behind our projection. Collectively we are all do-ing well in honoring our pledges.

Thanks to everyone that has stepped forward to fi-nancially support the ministry of St. Augustine’s.We know the overall economic climate is not sogood. We are bucking the trend here in ClaytonCounty. Thank you.

De b o ra h’s Do l la rs a nd S e ns e

Spending is still well within budget andcontributions are picking up. If we stayon this track, our Reserve/Rainy DayFund can continue to grow untapped inthe coming months. Thanks be to God!

What the numbers are saying: Regularcontributions for the month of Augustexceeded budget expectations by $1,201.We are now behind in our year-to-dateprojected contributions by only 1,132.August expenses, however, exceeded thebudget by $740. Still, year-to-date weare behind in our spending by $3,915.

Combined with the contributions shortfall,we are currently ‘in the black’ by $3,175, andthat’s not bad at all.

What the numbers do not tell us: Our fi-nancial picture at the close of August contin-ues the optimistic trend that started in July.
