2 SEPTEMBER 2018

Dear Member,

This year, WFMT’s weekly series Introductions, showcasing aspiring young classical

musicians, marks its 10th anniversary. Fittingly, WFMT will mark the occasion with a

special live concert – Chicago’s first Youth Arts Showcase – as part of the citywide Year of

Creative Youth celebration. Join us on air and online on Saturday morning, September 22

as WFMT’s Michael San Gabino welcomes the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and

Chicago Children’s Choir to Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

On WTTW, we observe Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of relevant content, some

of it new and local (see page 7). Golden Age Amsterdam comes alive in a new miniseries

adaptation of Jessie Burton’s bestselling novel The Miniaturist. Poldark, The Durrells in

Corfu, and 800 Words are back with new seasons along with another Anne of Green Gables

special; Ken Burns focuses his lens on the Mayo Clinic, and Jamestown, which first premiered

on wttw.com, comes to WTTW11 from the creators of Downton Abbey. On wttw.com, find

recipes for some of the delicious and unusual dishes from Christopher Kimball’s Milk

Street; catch up on The Miniaturist with our recaps; and share your favorite novel, test your

knowledge of books, watch author interviews, and more at wttw.com/read.

On WFMT, join us for another live special from Millennium Park: Chicago’s Music of the

Baroque, who will perform Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, and more for its Baroque in the Park

celebration. Don’t miss Sound the Shofar: An Ancient Instrument in Modern Times, featuring

the musical instrument that traditionally heralds the start of the Jewish High Holidays. On

wfmt.com, for anyone heading back to school, we offer classical music to help you study.

You will also find videos and interviews with artists from the 2018 Chicago World Music

Festival, the largest and longest-running international music festival in the country.

As the days grow shorter and the temperature cools, we hope you settle in and enjoy our

offerings on WTTW and WFMT. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek

Free Screening and Discussion: The Great American Read

WTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, presents a free event in connection with the PBS and WTTW literacy initiative The Great

American Read.All summer, readers

have been voting for their favorites from a curated list of 100 popular books put to-gether by PBS and spotlighted on the weekly series The Great American Read. As the big reveal of America’s favorite book nears, WTTW invites you to view a bit of the series and hear from some Chicago authors as they share their own favorite books and explain how they have influenced their writing. Join us for this free event! For more information and to RSVP, please visit wttw.com/events.

WTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, presents a free screening of and discussion about the new inCommon documentary Global Generation.

inCommon spent an academic year with students from 41 countries around the world - all represented at Lake Forest Academy - to discover how it is to live and learn together; over-

come misconceptions; create, connect, and cope with their genera-tional challenges; social media vs. solitude; par-ents, pressure, and peer reenforcement; individuality and diversity. What does it teach us about our common humanity and human possibility against the backdrop of a country and a world divided? The screening will be followed by a discussion. WFMT welcomes young musicians to Introductions’ first-ever live broadcast from the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, part of the Youth Arts Showcase (YAS! Fest).

In 2018, WFMT’s weekly Saturday morning series Introductions marked its 10th anniversary on the air, continuing its tradition of shining a well-deserved spotlight on young, local, up-and-coming classical musicians, with the goal of helping them launch successful careers in music. 2018 has also been designated Chicago’s Year of Creative Youth by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events – a citywide program that cele-brates Chicago’s young artists and the mentors who inspire them.

Join WFMT as Introductions takes part in the initiative’s Youth Arts Showcase (YAS! Fest) with its first-ever live broadcast from Millennium Park. Host Michael San Gabino welcomes the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and Chicago Children’s Choir to the Pritzker Pavilion stage to present a multi-genre program that includes in-terviews with students who share what music means to them, and the two groups joining forces for an inspiring musical finale. 2-for-1 Tickets to Violinist Jennifer Koh

The Music Institute of Chicago welcomes back alumna violinist Jennifer Koh for the opening concert of its 2018-19 Faculty and Guest Artist Series. The acclaimed Glen Ellyn native returns to perform two solo works by Bach – Sonata No. 1 in G minor and Sonata No. 3 in C Major – juxtaposed with a contemporary piece for solo violin, For Violin Alone, by John Harbison. Critics have de-scribed her playing of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas as intense, beautifully shaped, and mes-merizing. “Koh’s arresting tone and emotional interpretations of Bach are a perfect fit for the acoustics of Nichols Concert Hall,” said Music Institute President and CEO Mark George.

The concert takes place Saturday, September 15 at 7:30 pm at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. WTTW members may pur-chase two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, by calling (847) 905-1500 and using the code WTTW. For more information, please visit musicinst.org.

Performances take place Sunday, September 23 at 3:00 pm (special time) at Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston; Wednesday, September 26 at 7:30 pm at the Pianoforte Studios, 1335 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago; and Sunday, September 30 at 7:00 pm at Chapelstreet Church, 2300 South Street in Geneva. WTTW members may purchase two full-price tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, ONLY by calling (630) 628-9591 in advance and using code WTTW. a concert program produced in collaboration with Third Way Projects featuring three world premieres by Chicago choreographers. Cole, in line with the overall concert theme, is choreographing a quartet that

explores the vulnerability of peeling down layers, its discomfort and its beauty. Peter Carpenter is creating a solo for Cole that features his distinctive combination of move-ment and politically savvy text. Colleen Halloran is creating a new dance for three performers that examines the perception of truth and considers, “Can we trust memory when we recall an emotional event?”

Performances of REboot take place September 14-16 at 7:00 pm at Dovetail Studios, 2853 W. Montrose Avenue in Chicago. WTTW members may purchase two tickets

for the price of one for the September 14 and 15 performances, subject to availability, by emailing [email protected] and mentioning WTTW. For more information about The Dance COLEctive, please visit margicole.com.

Exit ZeroSoutheast Chicago was formerly one of the largest steel-producing regions in the world. But that all began to change in the 1980s as one by one, the mills closed, leaving a region devastated by a crumbling economy and a toxic environment left behind by heavy industry. A forgotten region, even the exit ramp here is numbered Zero. This film captures the stories of a region traumatized by de-industrialization, and looks toward a future of economic opportunity and environmental justice for Southeast Chicago residents.

He traces fascism’s history, chronicles the brutal measures the leaders used to enforce their ideologies, and discusses the horrific consequences of genocide and total war. Along the way, Rick visits poignant sites throughout Europe relating to fascism and talks with Europeans whose families lived through those times. His goal: to learn from the hard lessons of 20th century Europe and to recognize that ideology in the 21st century.

Basquiat: Rags to Riches – American MastersOne of the most influential American artists of the 20th century, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a rock star of the early ’80s New York art scene.

Friday, September 14, 9:00 pm

Spying on the RoyalsThis riveting two-part documentary tells the secret story behind events that stunned the world, 80 years ago. On December 5, 1936, King Edward VIII secretly phoned his brother, the future monarch George VI, to tell him he could no longer be King if it meant abandoning the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Little did they know that others were secretly listening to their calls. The greatest royal romance of the 20th century can now be seen through the secret files of those who spied on Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson, and a king-to-be in their own words from the time and eyewitnesses still living today.

Pilsen StoriesIn 2016, WTTW began an in-depth examination of Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, exploring the intricacies, challenges, and voices that make up the community’s rich, historic tapestry. Beginning with a 60-minute documentary and supporting digital initiative, the project gave viewers and readers an intimate look inside the Pilsen community. These are some of their stories, told by those who live, breathe, and work to find solutions for critical local and national issues: Pilsen’s own Mexican-American residents.

9:00 Art in the Twenty-First Century: Johannesburg Four

In the Spotlight

POV: 93Queen93Queen is set in the Hasidic enclave of Borough Park, Brooklyn, where EMS corps have long been the province of men. Though the neighborhood is home to the largest volunteer ambulance corps in the world, known as Hatzolah, that organization has steadfastly banned women from its ranks. Now Ruchie and an engaging cast of dogged Hasidic women are risking their reputations – and, literally, the futures of their children – by taking matters into their own hands to provide dignified emergency medical care to the Hasidic women and girls of Borough Park.

Monday, September 17, 10:00 pm

Rachel “Ruchie” Freier

The Amazing Human BodyExplore the internal mechanics of the human body through pioneering graphics and captivating scientific case studies. Witness the fascinating and finely tuned systems that keep the body motoring and the scientists guessing.

Wednesday, September 19, 8:00 pm

Akash Vukoti, Spelling Bee contestant

Art in the Twenty-First CenturyThis series focuses on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, profiling artists who speak directly to the audience in their own words, reflecting on their lives, sources of inspiration, and working processes. Filmed in their studios, homes, and exhibition spaces, these artists demonstrate the full breadth of artistic practice across the country and reveal the depth of inter-generational and multicultural talent.

22 SEPTEMBER 2018

Music of the Baroque: Ranging WideDuring its 2017-18 concert season, Chicago’s Music of the Baroque performed Handel’s Biblical oratorio Esther and Mendelssohn’s Handel-inspired oratorio Elijah, also based on portions of the Hebrew Bible. These two Saturday-afternoon broadcasts will herald MOB’s Baroque in the Park performance at Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, a gala kickoff for the ensemble’s new season, also featuring Glover as the conductor, plus onstage host Carl Grapentine. Baroque in the Park includes several Handel favorites like Music for the Royal Fireworks and a suite from The Water Music, plus choruses by Bach and Mozart and Vivaldi’s Autumn violin concerto with soloist Gina DiBello. Esther uses a chorus, an orchestra, and several vocal soloists to tell an ancient love story that’s both charming and dramatic. The heroine, one of the Israelites captured by the Persian Empire, marries the empire’s ruler and, through his love for her, succeeds in saving her people from the schemes of the murderous Haman. Elijah, by contrast, focuses on a great prophet of ancient Israel and his steadfast faith in God, even though challenged by the pagan beliefs of surrounding nations. Perhaps the best-known extract from the oratorio, in which the chorus plays a major role representing the people of Israel, is “He Watching Over Israel/Slumbers Not, Nor Sleeps.” But there are quite a few other highlights in this powerful Mendelssohn score.

2018 SEPTEMBER 23

For the High Holidays: Music for the ShofarAll art builds on the past to create something new. Miguel Kertsman’s new composition, recently recorded by the London Philharmonic, is a concerto for the shofar, the ram’s-horn instrument traditionally used to announce Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and the start of the High Holidays, culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Sound the Shofar: An Ancient Instrument in Modern Times will feature the world-premiere broadcast of the concerto, with soloist Gergely Sugar. Co-producers Louise Frank and Kerry Frumkin remind us that in addition to its ceremonial role, the shofar was used in ancient times as a call to arms, and to allow shepherds to communicate across far-flung fields. “From the synagogue to the secular,” comments Louise, “the shofar’s unique resonance will endure for many years to come.” In addition to playing the concerto itself, Kerry and Louise will include in their documentary interviews with the composer, the soloist, conductor Dennis Russell Davies, and several of the other featured artists on the new Naxos CD, being released this month.

Live from Millennium Park: Introductions at the YAS! FestMayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events have designated 2018 as the Year of Creative Youth. This is a citywide celebration of Chicago’s young artists and their mentors, and it happens to coincide with the 10th anniversary of WFMT’s show called Introductions, which spotlights the Chicago area’s pre-college-age classical musicians. As a highlight of the Year of Creative Youth, Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park is hosting the first YAS! Fest, YAS standing for Youth Arts Showcase, featuring Chicago Children’s Choir and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. This event will run the entire afternoon of Saturday, September 22; WFMT’s Michael San Gabino will be on hand for hour one, from 11:00 am to noon, to host a live broadcast direct from the Pritzker stage as a special edition of Introductions. (If you’d like to attend the rest of the fest, it continues on the 22nd until 7:00 pm on the Millennium Park campus; admission is free.) The Year of Creative Youth is presented by Allstate Insurance Company with grant support provided by The Chicago Community Trust and support from the Chicago Transit Authority.

A British Tradition: The Last Night of the PromsSir Andrew Davis, music director for Lyric Opera of Chicago, is also chief conductor-laureate of the BBC Symphony, and in that capacity, he’ll lead that orchestra, plus two choruses and two vocal soloists, for the conclusion of this year’s BBC Promenade Concerts, billed as the world’s largest classical-music festival. Part of the Last Night will be a new commission, Songs of Darkness, Dreams of Light by British composer Roxanna Panufnik (daughter of the Polish-British composer Andrzej Panufnik). There’ll be the traditional favorites too, like Fantasia on British Sea Songs by Proms founder Sir Henry Wood, Sir Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem, and music by Elgar, Stanford, and other British composers – plus an American, Richard Rodgers.
