T HE MIRROR Newspaper of the International Dzogchen Community January /February 2006 • Issue No. 78 T he day after Christmas rain showers fell in the early morning, but by afternoon when the retreat was about to begin the sun came out and greet- ed about two hundred-seventy people for the Longde retreat at Tashigar Norte, Isla Margarita. Rinpoche welcomed every- one, including the worldwide Community, as the retreat was offered as a video and audio web cast. On the first day of the retreat, Rinpoche introduced the context of the Longde Teachings, indicating that after direct intro- duction many doubts may still persist in regard to the nature of mind and in order to overcome those doubts, the series of teach- ings called Dzogchen Longde provides many methods. Rinpoche explained that the aim of Longde was not to remain in doubt and that the third series known as Menngagde, focuses on the third statement of Garab Dorje: continuing in that state integrating all aspects of body , speech, and mind. Even if we think we have understood something of our real condition, Rinpoche stated that this may only be our limited idea - perhaps just a judgment - and stressed the importance of recon- necting to the transmission through Guru Yoga again and again. Rinpoche briefly explained that in the Longde teachings there are positions that are necessary for doing the practice and having the experiences of emptiness, clarity, and sensation. These threes experiences form the basis for discovering the state of ‘not remaining in doubt’. Rinpoche advised his stu- dents not to practice only one series of Dzogchen teachings but to work with all three. While there exist dif ferences in method regarding the three series, from the point of view of the state itself, there is actually no dif fer- ence at all. The empowerment of Nondzog Gyalpo was the subject of the second day of the retreat. Explaining the refuge section, Rinpoche said that although a vow of refuge and giving of a dharma name associated with the Hinayana refuge system might be useful, it is only relative and not the main point. Primarily , we go to refuge while journeying towards our goal so that we do not create any problems for the teacher, the path, or the sangha. Once, however, full realization is accomplished, there is no further need for any refuge. Moreover, he said, that due to our negative emotions it was very easy for stu- dents to develop wrong intention in regard to the path and that before engaging in any practice we must transform those feelings by developing our intention to benefit all sentient beings. The principle section of the retreat was an explanation of the Longde teachings based upon Rinpoche’s newly written com- mentary on his Longde instruc- tions from the Longsal Cycle of Teachings entitled “The Root Upadesha on the Vajra Bridge of Longde” ( see Longsal T eachings Volume One ). Divided into eight sections, the commentary explains how knowledge is introduced through the four Da (signs) of emptiness, clarity, sensation, and their inseparability . It also explains how to use the medita- tion belt, stick, the way of sitting and the four positions associated with the Longde practice. In order to establish the experiences asso- ciated with Longde, Rinpoche spoke in detail about the impor- tance of the prana energy, its rela- tion to time, and how to practice the four Da. Hello to the Dzogchen Com-munity and welcome tothis retreat. I am very hap-

py we have another occasion to doa retreat together because doing aretreat together is something veryuseful and important.

Semde Series: Mind and Nature of Mind

We are following the Dzogchenteaching. You already know themain p oints o f t he D zogchenteaching. There are three seriesand the first series is related to thefirst statement of Garab Dorje, which we find in the DzogchenSemde. Sem means mind andnature of mind; to discover thenature of mind it is necessary touse the mind. For example, to dis-cover the potentiality of the mir-ror it is necessary to examine thereflections in the mirror . That isan example of all the concepts ofthe mind. Semde means mind andnature of mind altogether . Demeans series of teaching. InSemde we work with the firststatement of Garab Dorje calledDirect Introduction. In Dzogchenteaching, many teachers intro-duce the nature of mind directlyand sometimes people can dis-cover their real nature. Even ifsomeone has discovered some-thing through direct introduction, most people remain in doubt andare not sure if they have experi-enced anything. When people areuncertain of their experience, they want to ask the teacher , butthe nature of mind is not easy forthe teacher to clarify with wordsOur real nature is beyond lan-guage and speech. When theteacher introduces the real nature, the teacher and student worktogether with experience. Theteacher not only explains, but alsotogether with the student repeatsthe experience again and again. Ifthere already was doubt anddoubt still remains, asking theteacher is not a solution. Theteacher can say a few words, butthe student will still not be satis-fied.

Not Remaining in Doubt The Second Statement of Garab Dorje

There are methods for notremaining in doubt. That is thesecond statement of Garab Dorjeand Dzogchen Longde is a seriesof practices related to this state-ment. Long means space - spaceas the base of all manifestations. For example, when we open oureyes and all of our organs of sens-es to objects, all our senses havecontact with objects and we havesome kind of very special experi-ence and we learn through thatexperience. We learn with thatkind of experience through theteaching and knowledge. Whenwe are introduced and go throughexperiences one by one and havedifferent kinds of experiences, like feelings or visions; theseexperiences related to visions arerelated to space. All objects ofsenses that we find in space arerelated to Longde; long meaningspace and in that space we canhave different kinds of manifesta-tions related to our experiences. Ifyou think about the dif ferencebetween these two words, sem

and long, you can understand thatsem means something in yourcondition and long means some-thing manifesting in space, whichcan also manifest your potentiali-ty. It is important to have mani-festations of one’ s potentialitybecause we do not have that kindof experience through thoughts.Manifestations through thoughtsare only ideas. We have many dif-ferent thoughts and ideas, butthey do not correspond to our realnature. It is very important thatwe have the experience of visionsin space and we work with them.Long means space and withLongde practice we have the pos-sibility of having that kind ofexperience. When we experiencethat kind of manifestation, ourknowledge becomes stable andwe do not remain in doubt. Wewill not remain in doubt if wehave a concrete experience.

The Mysterious Object &Discovering Our Real Nature

I very often give the example of amysterious object. We don’ tknow what the mysterious objectis; otherwise it would not be mys-terious. When we want to find outwhat a mysterious object is weask an expert. The expertexplains, we listen and find some-thing concrete. When we listen toand believe the expert we don’ thave any more questions and wethink we understand. That is adecision of the mind. You thinkyou have understood but youhave not really discovered foryourself, and the mysterious objectremains mysterious. M aybe yougo to another expert and discoverthat expert is better than the onebefore and then you think youhave discovered and understood. Then you find another book thatexplains more and more and youbelieve that new book. Thatmeans that whatever you discov-ered and knew before is not trueor there would be no reason foryou to change your idea. Many people function like thiswhen they follow a teaching. Some people say that many yearsago they followed a kind of tradi-tion and teacher , but now theyfollow another tradition and

teaching that they find more satis-factory. In a real sense, that per -son is still living in the same way.Maybe that person can findanother more expert teacherwhom they believe much more, but that will not be the finalteacher. You can change teachersall your life. If you need tochange so much, that means youhave not yet discovered your realnature. How can you discover the myste-rious object? If someone is reallyan expert of knowledge and saysthey cannot explain it to you, andthat you can try to see it and gotogether to the place where themysterious object is, that teacheris bringing you into the experi-ence in order for you to have adirect experience. The teacher isnot only giving you an explana-tion to follow. The teacher bringsyou into a dark room, for exam-ple. The room is dark because noone can see a mysterious object, otherwise it would not be myste-rious. Then the teacher says thatnow you can have an experience, but that doesn’t mean the teacherexplains the experience and youlook. If you look in the dark youcannot see anything, the teacherintroduces you how to open youreyes. The teacher says one, twothree and you look in front and atthat moment you must be aware. You receive that instruction, youare with your teacher and youremain in that moment with theteacher in the dark and the teachersays one, two, three and at thatmoment you open your eyes andlook. You have a kind of flash. That flash is the potentiality oftransmission and that is why wesay the teaching must connectwith the transmission. If you follow the Dzogchenteaching and are not connectedwith transmission, you will nothave realization even if you prac-tice for many years. For that rea-son we should always practiceGuruyoga; Guruyoga is connect-ed with transmission. We mustrepeat the experience of the trans-mission and how we receiveddirect introduction from ourteacher; at that moment if you hadsome experience then you canrepeat that experience. That is

called the state of Guruyoga. Itdoesn’t mean that you are nolonger in the dark for one or twohours. The flash is just for a shorttime and then it disappears.

Mother and Son Wisdom

In the Tantric teachings, when weexperience this flash, it means wehave received the wisdom of theson. Mother wisdom means thatfrom the moment of the flash, you are forever in light and thereis no more dark. We all havemother wisdom, but it does notmanifest; Mother wisdom doesnot manifest because we are insamsara and have infinite nega-tive karmic potentialities. That iswhy we need to do purificationpractice and should develop ourcapacity for being in the state ofcontemplation. Your teacher does not tell you thatyou are enlightened after youhave received transmission andyou have followed the teachingand had some kind of experience.Your teacher doesn’t say that nowthat is enough and you areenlightened. Your teacher tellsyou to do practice and try to doGuruyoga and be in that state. Weare in samsara because even afterwe experience the instant flashwe are again in the dark. Whenwe experience direct introductionwe say we have now discoveredour instant presence. When wehave discovered instant presencewe try to be in that state again andagain for all of our lives. This iscalled the practice of Dzogchen.

Meditation & Instant Presence

When we discover the real senseof direct introduction we have abase for doing meditation. TheDzogchen way of meditationmeans we are in the state of ourreal nature. In general, meditationhas a very open meaning. Forexample, you see a tree and youwant to keep the vision of the treein your mind. You keep the pres -ence of the tree in your mind. That is also called meditation. That is not contemplation orbeing in instant presence. Whenyou concentrate on an object oridea, you are meditating on it.Meditation has many meanings andmany aspects. In the Dzogchenteaching you must understand, youcan meditate, do contemplation,be in the state of Guruyoga, butthe principle is always to be in thestate of instant presence. Weshould discover that instant pres-ence. That is the aim of why andhow the teacher introduces youdirectly. The methods of theseries of Longde teachings canhelp us after direct introduction ifwe still have doubt.

Integration & Menngagde Series

The most important student ofGarab Dorje made a collection ofGarab Dorje’ s teachings anddivided them into three series. The first is Dzogchen Semde andthe second is Dzogchen Longde.Longde is related to the secondstatement of Garab Dorje; notremaining in doubt. This is theaim of the practice of DzogchenLongde. If you have no doubt, then youintegrate and try to remain in that

state. If you have this knowledgeand full confidence, you shouldgo to the last statement of GarabDorje and integrate. You shouldintegrate totally with your body ,speech, mind and your daily life. This is the main practice of peo-ple who have discovered theirinstant presence. These people nolonger remain in doubt and go onintegrating. Many people follow the lastseries of the Dzogchen teachingcalled Upadesha or Menngagde.Men is negative in Tibetan, ngameans voice, voice means speak-ing, men nga means not to speakand that you keep the teachingsecret. Many people receiveteachings from a teacher and thenthey talk about it everywhere.Particularly people who drink orget drunk, they go to a bar and sitwith friends, drink and get drunk. They speak loudly saying, “Doyou remember what instant pres-ence is like? [Laughter] What theteacher said we should do?” Allthese things are secret, but thesepeople speak openly about them. They don’t have a bad intention, but they are drunk and that is notthe correct way in the Dzogchenteaching. We speak particularly inthe Dzogchen teaching about ourattitude. We do not say you can’ tdrink or never get drunk.Drinking is not forbidden. Youare free, but you must be aware. You must be aware of what yourcapacity is for drinking. If youdrink a glass of wine maybe thereis no problem, but if you drink abottle of wine maybe you feel alittle abnormal. If you drink morethan one bottle of wine, then youare drunk [laughter] and you dostrange things. That does not cor-respond with your awareness. It is the same way with peoplewho smoke. There are so manyheavy things to smoke today .Some people find this very usefulbecause when they smoke theyfeel more interested in the teach-ings. You are interested in theDzogchen teaching because youhave some connection with thisteaching and this teacher, you arenot interested through the powerof the drug. That is not true at all. Some people smoke and seestrange things and believe theyare enlightened at that moment, even if the enlightenment doesnot remain a very long time. Thatis not enlightenment or a manifes-tation of your qualification. Thatis because you have charged yourenergy. For example, you arecharging and char ging, you havesome kind of experience, but theconsequence of char ging is thatone day you will explode. Yourclarity diminishes even if youdon’t explode. That is what GuruPadmasambhava said; I am notinventing that. You become pas -sive and receive all negativities.Your clarity diminishes and thatdoes not correspond with theteaching. The teaching is forincreasing clarity and for protect-ing our energy and existence fromall negativities. If you becomepassive, you cannot be protected. It is very easy to understand and itis very important that everybodyreally understands that. People have a kind of ancienttrace of being a “hippie”. It ismuch better to be aware and stop

this trace. You should try to helpyourself and not destroy yourselfin this life. Life is precious andwe have many good occasions tohave total realization in this life.We should not destroy this pre-cious life. It is very important tolearn what being aware reallymeans. That is something veryuseful for knowledge in our dailylives. The teaching helps us to bepresent and understand all thesethings.

Empowerment & Direct Introduction

At this retreat we will work withthe method of Longde. First weneed a kind of empowerment anddirect introduction. Empowermentand direct introduction are indis-pensable for following theDzogchen teaching and for con-necting with the transmission. Ifwe do not have the base of dis-covering our instant presence, even if we learn many methodsand practices, it is like a field withno seed. There can be nice earth, weather, light, water , etc., but ifthere is no seed, nothing grows.Instant presence is indispensablein Dzogchen. Dzogchen practicemeans being in the state of instantpresence. If you have not discov-ered your instant presence, thebase is missing. You need toreceive direct introduction forthat reason. If you receive directintroduction but still do not dis-cover instant presence, theteacher can give advice. You canalso remember how you receivedthat direct introduction; even ifyou did not receive direct intro-duction from your own teacher ,you apply that method and inte-grate that teacher into your stateof presence in Guruyoga. You tryand repeat that method. Thatmethod is secret, so you shouldtry and repeat it in a secret andquiet place where no one will dis-turb you. You should not repeatthese things where there is a thor-oughfare of people and move-ment. If you do this practice pub-licly, then there is a problem foryour transmission because you

are not keeping it secret. If you donot keep it secret it becomes neg-ative and you will not be able tohave the real experience of dis-covering your real nature ofinstant presence. You should dothis practice in a correct way andrepeat it. You can repeat it for onemonth or one year if necessary.

Monkey Mind & Primordial Potentiality

If you have discovered yournature of mind but still remain indoubt, you can follow the teach-ing of Dzogchen Longde.Dzogchen Longde is very impor-tant for Dzogchen practitioners tomake their knowledge certain. We cannot make knowledge cer-tain with the method of DzogchenSemde, but it is possible withDzogchen Longde. If youremember the names of the twoseries, sem and long, you canunderstand what the difference is.Through Dzogchen Longde, something can manifest in spacebut it is not fantasy or imagina-tion. People say, “Oh, I see some-thing manifesting in space”, but itis not a manifestation in the realsense. It is people going aftertheir minds. It is said in the teach-ing that the mind is like a mon-key; the monkey never stops, it isalways moving and doing some-thing. In the same way , our mindnever stops manifesting. In ourmind we think and imagine andthen that something becomes amanifestation. This is not mani -festation. It is fantasy . You cancreate and apply this kind of fan-tasy, but that is not connectedwith your real nature or potential-ity at all. When we use methodslike Dzogchen Longde with thepotentiality of transmission andmethod together , we can havesome kinds of visions. Thatvision is related to our primordialpotentiality of sound, light andrays, which all sentient beingshave in their nature.

ChNN’s schedule continued from page 1

Of the three sacred principles contemplation isright at the center of them, and in fact it isreally the main point of them all. Whenever

we begin a session of teaching in the Dzogchen Com-munity we always sing the Song of the Vajra. We dothis in order to bring ourselves into the state of con-templation. This is particularly important for thosewho already have knowledge of the state but do notyet remain in that state all the time. Entering into thestate of contemplation together through the Song ofthe Vajra at the beginning of a session of teachingsreawakens us to the fact that the process involved inreceiving teachings from a Master is one of workingtogether in collaboration through transmission, andnot one in which the student is either merely passiveor only engaged at an intellectual level.

Following the teachings of Tantra or Dzogchenalways involves the principle of transmission, andthis transmission is not something one can receivethrough reading books or through the words of anoral explanation alone. That kind of approach ismore characteristic of how one might follow theteachings at the level of the Sutra. In Dzogchen, transmission is the life of the teaching; one cannotattain realization without it. There are three kinds oftransmission: direct, oral and symbolic. Garab Dorjewas the first human teacher of Dzogchen on thisplanet in this time cycle. Before concluding his lifein the realization of the Body of Light he summa-rized his teaching in what became known as theThree Statements of Garab Dorje. The first of thesestatements is Direct Introduction. In this DirectIntroduction the teacher introduces the student to thestate of contemplation through experiences of body ,voice and mind. The second statement is NotRemaining in Doubt. The student experiences thestate of contemplation through the transmission he orshe has received in the Direct Introduction and nolonger remains in any doubt as to what contempla-tion is. The third statement is Continuing in the State. This means that the student seeks to remain in thestate of contemplation all the time, remaining in thenatural condition of instant presence without correct-ing it when it is there, and applying practices as nec-essary according to circumstances to re-enter thestate when she or he has become distracted from it.

Thus when we practice Guruyoga what we aretrying to do is to find ourselves, through our practice,in the state which the teacher has transmitted, thestate in which the teacher remains all the time. Whenwe are in the state of contemplation there is no sep-aration between the teacher and ourselves. ThroughGuruyoga we can enter the state of contemplation, but the teacher is indispensable in Dzogchen becausewithout r eceiving d irect t ransmission f rom t heteacher there can be no realization.

Parallel to the Direct Introduction I have justexplained there are in fact two other kinds of trans-mission spoken of in the Dzogchen teachings. Whenwe listen to general explanations of the teachings orto particular instructions relating to various methodssuch as, for example, instructions for visualizations, special examples etc., which is called OralTransmission. And then there is what is known asSymbolic Transmission, which refers to the use bythe Master of objects such as a crystal, a mirror, or apeacock feather as symbols to help the student dis-cover the nature of the inherent potentiality of their

own state, and how that potentiality manifests asenergy in various way.

The reason we sing the Song of the Vajra so oftenin the Dzogchen Community is to enable us to findourselves in the state of contemplation. When we arein that state, we are in union with our Master , unitedin the experience of the knowledge that he or shetransmits, united in contemplation. In contemplationwe find ourselves beyond the distracted state of ourhabitually confused minds, completely relaxed in thenaked awareness that is our natural condition. In thisnatural condition thoughts or emotions can arise, butthey do not disturb us: we remain in the non-dualstate integrated with whatever arises, without accept-ing or rejecting anything. Practicing in this way weare able to remain in contemplation working withwhatever situation or circumstance we find our-selves in.

In the state of non-dual contemplation there isreally nothing to do, nothing to apply . There is noneed to struggle with anything, everything can be leftjust ‘as it is’, with nothing to purify or transform. Then we discover for ourselves what is meant byThe Great Perfection, or Total Perfection, which areboth ways in which the Tibetan word Dzogchen canbe translated. When we discover the self-perfectednature of our own state we understand that Dzogchenis a word that, rather than referring to a tradition orschool, really refers to our own inherent condition, the ‘self-perfected state’ that is always there in eachof us, but which is only experienced in contempla-tion. So contemplation is the most important of thethree sacred principles.

Il Vaso Prezioso, La Jarra Pre -ciosa, The Precious Vase,Dragotsenny Sosud…..W e’re

in Margarita and this is the bookthat we all carry with us, each inour own language. We have comefrom all over the world. There aresome who have already read itand reread it to do the exam, andothers who have picked it up forthe first time. We see this preciousbook that accompanies us in theteaching at the sea, in the village,at the Gar; it’ s always with us aswe revise, read, form practicegroups. Here on the Island everything isvery intense and full of energy. And now the retreat is starting! It’s truly an important opportuni -ty, hearing the Master talkingabout the subjects contained inthe Precious Vase; it’ s as if theconcepts expressed in the booktook shape through the Master ’swords and penetrated the depthsof our being, integrating with thepersonal experiences of each one.

Listening to the Master talkingabout the Paramitas or Bodhicittain such a direct way , everythingbecomes more concrete andaccessible. In the afternoon we do the prac-tices of the Base with AdrianoClemente or the Semzin withGrisha Mokhin or the Rushenwith Elio Guarisco. It all goes by very fast. It seemsthe retreat started just now andthe Master is already giving usthe last day’s advice. As nourishment we have tried totake in every word he says, with-out losing as much as a comma, and now in a lightning flash wehave reached the end.We are a bit sad, as at the end ofevery retreat. But everythingpasses, is impermanent, and weare ready to try to integrate inevery day life, doing our best. Some people are leaving, somestaying, some arriving already forthe next retreat. All happy and sadat the same time. What we are all aware of is howfortunate we are!

In Tibet, the elderly are thecustodians of a world of tra-ditions and of wisdom that

is running the risk of disap-pearing. They are the threadlinking the young to their roots.

Witnesses to the tragedy of theoccupation of their land, theyhave lived first hand the con-stant and inexorable destruc-tion of their heritage of knowl-edge and of their way of life, which had survived for thou-sands of years. They have losttheir dear ones during the cul-tural revolution, but have notlost their dignity and play afundamental role in their com-munity: they look after thechildren, who are oftenorphans entrusted exclusivelyto their care; they take care ofthe house; and above all theytransmit to the new genera-tions the heart of Tibetan cul-ture through their stories, theircustoms and their great devo-tion.

Small prayer flags, auspicioussymbols and votive of feringsaround the house, alwaysmake an elderly person’s pres-ence in the house discerniblefrom the outside.

For years ASIA has been sup-porting elderly T ibetansthrough development andemergency projects. By means

of distribution of food andmedicine in crisis situations, interventions in the health sec-tor and long distance supportin refugee settlements in India,ASIA provides the elderly withthe care and assistance neces-sary for a dignified life.

On New Year’s Eveeveryone participated in aGanapuja led by Adriano, andas everyone awaited the arrivalof the New Year, we enjoyed anentertaining lottery for MerigarEast in which seventy-five peo-ple won something big or small.A beautiful Guam Devi statuewas the first prize that ended upin the hands of a young girlfrom Bolivia. ASIA, Tsegyalgarand Tashigar Norte all auc-tioned various items and raisedmodest funds for their respec-tive projects.

Early morning showers fellagain on the New Year’s Day,the last day of the retreat, but by

the time Rinpoche arrived thesky was clearing. Rinpocheconcluded the retreat in typicalform with advice regarding ourdaily lives and behavior . Hespoke out strongly against theuse of drugs, overdrinking with-out awareness, and encouragedhis students to engage in prac-tices related to the four phasesof walking, sleeping, eating andsitting. While stressing theimportance of Guru Yoga as thecentral unifying focus of all ourpractice, he of fered many trid -lungs to develop our practiceaccording to specific conditionsand circumstances. The Annual Report of the Shang-Shung Institute, Austria2005The year 2005 was a very work-intensive and fruitful year . The Ka-ter Translation Project made most of the progress:

The new book of Rinpoche “On Birth, Life and Death” will be published in Spring 2006 in English and fol-lowing in several other languages. Very special thanks to Elio Guarisco for all his ef forts in order to makea correct and very precise translation.

The three main translators of the Dzogchen-Community - Elio Guarisco, Jim Valby and Adriano Clemente- collaborated very intensively on the translation of a very important Dzogchen Tantra, the Mejung. It real-ly is a pain striking and extremely dif ficult work as from this Tantra there exist eight dif ferent versions ofTibetan texts that are not the same. It is the very first time that such a dif ficult work of translation into aWestern language has been done up to now, and it never would be possible without the so generous and com-passionate help of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. The translation of this Tantra probably will be ready for pub-lishing in 2007.

In Summer 2005, the third Training for Translators from Tibetan under the guidance of Elio Guarisco washeld in Merigar. Ten translators from the worldwide Dzogchen Community worked for four weeks on thetranslation of another marvelous Dzogchen Tantra, the Khanyam, and “The Primordial State Equal to Sky”.Due to this work, all the participants could progress in their ability to translate spiritual Tibetan texts. InSummer 2006, the fourth Training for Translators will again take place in Merigar.

The Ka-ter Translation Project is financed by donations only and I want to express my deepest gratitude toall donors who have supported our work for making available these texts of wisdom to all interested peoplein Western languages. I especially want to thank Chögyal Namkhai Norbu for all his support. In order toguarantee a continuation of our work in the future, it will be necessary that our activities be supported in thesame generous way as has been done until now. Thank you so much for all your collaboration. You can alsomake online donations via our web safe site:https://ssl13.inode.at/ssi-austria.at/creditcardoffering.htm

America’s First Full Traditional Tibetan MedicineProgram Now Accepting New StudentsInstitute seeks to become first accr edited school ofTibetan Medicine in the WestConway, MA – The Shang-Shung Institute of America is now accepting applicationsfor Fall 2006 enrollment in its newly created Traditional Tibetan Medicine Program. The certification program, now in its second year, follows a recent revival of Tibetan med-icine in the East and marks one of the most significant advances for its preservation andpractice since His Holiness, the 14 th Dalai Lama in exile, re-established the Men-Tsee-Khang in Dharamsala, India in 1961. The innovative curriculum is the first-of-its-kind in English and the only full-time, four -year traditional Tibetan medicine certification program of fered in the United States.Graduates will be among the first American-trained certified practitioners and will helpput the institute on the path of becoming the first fully accredited school of Tibetan med-icine in the West. The institute also offers introductory seasonal intensives that can be applied toward certi-fication. Limited work-study opportunities are available, and new students can applyonline for both fall enrollment and summer intensives at ShangShung.or g.

Four-year Certification Program

Under the direction of Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo, a physician with an advanced degree fromLhasa University in Traditional Tibetan Medicine, the program closely parallels tradi-tional training rooted in the Gyud Zhi (pronounced “gyu shee”), the fundamental text ofTibetan medicine better known as “The Four Tantras” in English. The ancient Tantrasclassify an amazing 1600 types of diseases and corresponding treatments using more than3,000 medicinal plants native to the Himalayas. The comprehensive curriculum also cov-ers Tibetan physician ethics, medical history and language and includes clinical training;medicine preparation and Kunye massage therapy.

Traditional Tibetan Medicine

With a history going back over 2,500 years, traditional Tibetan medicine is one of the old-est continuously practiced healing systems on Earth. Regarded as science, art and phi-losophy, it is an ancient form of holistic heath care indigenous to the Tibetan people thatintegrates the core Buddhist principles of altruism, karma and ethics. Initially influencedby Ayurveda, traditional Tibetan medicine evolved into a synthesis of thousands of yearsof accumulated empirical knowledge from China, Persia, India and Greece. It was prac -ticed continuously in Tibet until the Chinese invasion in the 1950s and is still practicedtoday wherever Tibetans live in exile.

VAJRA DANCE NEW YORK CITY

The New York City Dzogchen Community would like to promote the Vajra Dance now that there is a newMandala. Due to the expense of organizing for a dance teacher to come, we would like to know how

many people would be willing to commit and pre-pay a course.

According to Anastasia McGee, one of the appointed dance teachers, the Song of the Vajra course wouldbe presented over 4-5 weekends. The other two dances would be presented over one weekend each.

We are projecting that each weekend course would be approximately $150 per participant and that wewould need a minimum of 10 participants to approach breaking even. #221E$13.00Since it was Padmasambhava who brought Tantric Buddhism to Tibet,he is the most important guru in its lineages. Therefore, any reliabletestimony regarding his life is extremely valuable for those who studyand practice these teachings in the Western World. Tarantha (1575-?),the author of the biography contained in this book, is one of the majorTibetan historians of his age. His testimony is still considered reliableby Tibetans, and the source of his writings is in the Kama tradition.

Dreaming in Margaritaby Roland Wright

Removed from my life’ s usual unrelentingpace, and being in a place like Mar garita inRinpoche’s presence, it’s possible to appreci-

ate a bit the dream-like nature of our existence. Therefore I was happy to learn that Michael Katz hadbeen asked and had agreed to host an abbreviatedtwo-day Dream Yoga course during the preciousLongsal Longde teachings.

As the course started, Michael, in his easygoingway, explained that in lieu of any personal fees orremuneration for the two days he would appreciateour dream submissions. The New York CityDzogchen Community (www.nydzogchen.com) hascreated a section devoted to practitioners “interestinglucid dreams and dreams of clarity” all to be postedanonymously. He explained that with Rinpoche’ spermission, this site would be a place where we canbe inspired by the fruit of the “Practice of the Night”and read some of the dreams of our Vajra Kin. Healso encouraged us to submit our own dreams forothers to. With this agreement, our short experiencetogether began.

Michael started by explaining his understandingof the dif ference between Dream Yoga, and thePractice of Natural light. The first day, we focusedon Dream Yoga.

We did a very interesting exercise during whichwe roamed around the beautiful grounds of Tashigarwearing sunglasses, doing our best to experience itas the dream state!! The point of the exercise was tocarry awareness of the dream into daily life and by

mingling dream with reality assist our practice dur-ing the night. We also looked for unusual and inter -esting things to act as triggers for a lucid dream.Upon seeing something very unusual or interesting,we were to tell ourselves that if we would dream ofthis unusual thing in the future, we should recognizethe dream experience as a dream, and become lucid. After we finished this exercise, we sat together andshared some of our experiences. For myself, themost unusual thing I saw , something I’ll not soonforget, were a few dozen beautiful Yogi’s andYogini’s walking around in sunglasses pretendingthey were dreaming!!!

On the second day, we focused more on the prac-tices of natural light connected to Guru Yoga thatRinpoche has kindly transmitted to us. We also dida session of Namkha Arte as described in the 2ndedition of the Dream Yoga book. We took a shortnap on both days. I had difficulty sleeping, but someof the more relaxed among us were able tune out thenoise and heat, and actually dream.

Several participants including one new practi-tioner from Australia, Ben, even had lucid dreams.Ben’s brief lucid experience was of trying to hold atent down. John “Nirvana” Bidleman once told methat a tent is a great dream image - so I personallyfound this dream of Ben’s very interesting.

Due to time constraints we didn’ t have as muchtime for sharing as normally occurs in Michael’ scourses. It was still however a wonderful experienceto be together and focus intensely for a time on theseessential practices.

Many thanks to Michael for giving freely of histime and experience in this area - And of course, toRinpoche for his unfailing kindness in the transmis-sion of these precious teachings.”

VAJRA DANCE CLOTHES UPDATEDear Practitioners of the Vajra Dance,

In October 2004, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu introduced to theDzogchen Community the Vajra Dance Clothes that were preparedaccording to his transmission.During the last two years about thirty practitioners from all over theworld have started dancing with the Vajra Dance Clothes. Thosewho have experienced dancing with them have said it is a very spe-cial experience of integration, especially if the group is complete onthe Mandala. Our first production of the Vajra Dance Clothes took place in Nepal, and they were of very good quality but a little expensive. Since then, following Rinpoche’s indications, we have tried our best to look fora new producer that could guarantee quality but of fer a better price.Today we are in a position to offer the Vajra Dance Clothes for only170 Euro, and this cost just covers the basic expenses. We hope that this will enable most of the practitioners to af fordthem, so there will soon be more possibility of dancing with com-plete Mandalas all around the world. To optimize the production of the clothes, we should have grouporders so please, if you are interested, contact us as soon as possibleso that we can reach the minimum required.

With our best wishes!

ART AND DZOGCHENWhat is art and what is dharma and how does thisall r elate to Dzogchen? This is the topic that Iwould like to explor e here in a few wor ds and pic-tures.

“Genuine art - dharma art - is simply the activityof non-aggression.” Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche

The dharma art teachings by the late scholar ,artist and meditation master Chögyam Trung-pa Rinpoche are based on the view that every

sentient being has basic goodness. Basic goodnessmeans that we have an intrinsic capacity to gobeyond conditioned existence simply by being open.Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche talks about comingback to square one. Square one is a state in whichthere is nothing much going on. There is space forthings to occur but nothing has occurred yet. Every-thing is full of possibilities but there is an opennessthat has no bias or judgment. The path of dharma art

is the practice of non-aggression that comes fromsquare one. Synchronizing body and mind we mixeveryday life with non-aggression and we pay atten-tion to detail in what we do. In this way any activityof daily life becomes wakeful and genuine. Thefruition of dharma art is that by being genuine andnon-aggressive we benefit the world. As ChögyamTrungpa Rinpoche said: “The artist has the power tochange the world. You could play a tremendous rolein developing peace throughout the world.” In thiscase we uplift the world by being genuine and wake-ful.Miksang Contemplative Photography is part of thedharma art teachings introduced by ChögyamTrungpa Rinpoche. Miksang - in Tibetan meaning‘good eye’- is also based on the view of basic good-ness; in other words, the ability to be completely

open towards the world and towards any experi-ence. Here we use photography as a practice to synchro-nize eye and mind. Being fully present we are ableto perceive things directly . We have flashes of per -ception free from concept. Seeing things in theirown nature we share and express our perceptions bytaking a picture. Without manipulation we simplyperceive and express. As Chögyam TrungpaRinpoche put it: “There is such a thing as uncondi-tional expression that does not come from self orother. It manifests out of nowhere like mushroomsin a meadow, like hailstones, like thundershowers.”The outcome is quite the same as in dharma art. Bysharing what we have seen directly we are able tocommunicate the vividness of the world experi-enced through freshness of mind, which can bequite pleasing and awakening to the viewer. In my view , the Tregchöd teachings of Dzogchentaught by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche are

intimately interconnected to dharma art, as well asMiksang, in that we don’t manipulate anything. Wedon’t modify our experience. Whether our experi-ence is related to our physical body, our emotions orour thought patterns, we don’ t reject, accept orremain indifferent about it. We mix our experiencewith contemplation thereby integrating experiencewith resting in our true state, an awakened state

beyond the limitations of dualism. Experiences areneither good nor bad, they can have a flavor ofcourse, just like blue is blue and not yellow, and redis red and is beautiful but we look, see and experi-ence with the eyes of a lion who is beyond hope andfear. For me, the experience of practicing Tregchöd, notmodifying any experience related to body speechand mind, and the practice of dharma art andMiksang are related. One dif ference is that inMiksang, one chooses a medium to express the

unmodified experience that comes from a spacebeyond concept. In Miksang, this medium is pho-tography. In dharma art, in fact, it is any gesture, any movement and any activity of life. It is art ineveryday life. As Chögyam Trungpa said: “Being anartist is not an occupation; it is your life, your wholebeing.” In my opinion, an enlightened being whoperforms any action, be it as mundane as mundanecan be, will be an expression of enlightened activi-ty, like dharma art. Because everything an enlight -ened being does is completely integrated with con-templation, and resting in the primordial state. Itsonly function is to benefit others and to awaken usto the same possibility of being.

Nina Mudita has studied at Nar opa University inBoulder, Colorado, USA. After completing herMaster of Arts in Buddhism she studied Miksangwith Michael Wood, who has been developing andteaching Miksang for 30 years, since he metChögyam T rungpa Rinpoche. Curr ently Nina isMichael Wood’s assistant coor dinating courses aswell as introducing Miksang in Europe.

Calendar Agenda for the Fire Dog Year (2006-2007) Euro 10.00 Pocket agenda containing concise indications of the practices recommended by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu for special days, positive a nd negative daysfor the Nagas Practice, astrological data of the Tibetan Calendar and the individual aspects for those born between 1915 and 2006. Indispensable forfinding out favorable and unfavorable days for daily activities and to remember special practice days.

Key for Consulting the Tibetan Calendar

Edited by M.R. Leti Euro 13.00Much information on Tibetan astrology and on its application to daily life. A practical and complete manual, indispensable for the consultation of theannual astrological calendar. The Key for Consulting the Tibetan Calendar came out of a course held by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu in Rome at the beginning of the 1980’ s as partof a seminar on Tibetan Medicine and Astrology. It represents a precious and indeed unique contribution towards an understanding of the value of theancient knowledge of Tibetan astrology. It aims to act as an introduction to the Tibetan astrological universe, so different from ours in its complex and fascinating richness. At the same time,it can serve as a useful instrument to guide those who understand how closely our lives are linked to the warp and weft of the movements of the universe, in the general interdepen -dence of all phenomena.None of us, when in a hurry , would dream of going the wrong way up a one-way street in a car , or shooting a red light while at the same time choosing the longest route to our des-tination: it would be a senseless and contradictory behavior or worse suicidal. And yet even if this would obviously be absurd in relation to space, sometimes that is indeed what wedo in relation to time when we carry out certain actions. Amid our distractions and carelessness we ignore all the signals and we hurtle with apparent assurance towards virtually cer -tain failure.A calendar such as this one uses the knowledge and the synthesis of a thousand years of culture, even if we have for gotten it all. It is a tool which enables us to rediscover , at least inpart, how we fit in with that universal ener gy and with that cosmos of which we are the living image and a part, a more intense and more intimate part than we are usually preparedto believe. If all days are not the same, then it is important and useful to recognize the flavor, color and cadence with which each day manifests. But such information would fail in itsintent if it served only to make us apprehensive, anxious, or still worse, passive. As with traffic lights, this is not the aim. What you have in your hands is a Key , a precious key for the interpretation and reading of temporal and cosmic cycles, but the only person who can open and close t he door of youractions is yourself.

Ihave often thought a goodfriend of mine must be con-nected to our Master ’s trans-

mission because on two separateoccasions she was part of the howI met our precious Master , Chö-gyal Namkhai Norbu. From anearly age I was inquisitive aboutthings spiritual or beyond ourworld perhaps due to a recurringchildhood dream. I would wake-up, sometimes in a cold sweat, from being cast on a lar ge barrenrock to which I was spread-eagledclutching, hurtling through a vastlimitless space. The rock wasattached to a long heavy metallicchain that disappeared throughthe cold expanse of vacuous spacein a long arch and slowly swing-ing around and around from somedistant lost origin. This recurringdream would wake me in a feelingof desperation and maybeinstilled in me the thought that lifewas a journey from some situationnot very pleasant. The idea ofsome kind of quest becameingrained in me, part of my life.I was raised in a Catholic familyand a religious education fromwhich I rebelled while still atschool and felt strangely comfort-able avoiding the church servicesof school and home. While stillyoung I was fascinated by bookson foreign cultures and places andlater read avidly anything on east-ern or western religions orphilosophies. On leaving school I studied archi-tecture at university and was for-tunate to have some very goodteachers who introduced me tothe theory and principles of tradi-tional architecture. Instead ofgraduating from university andgetting a good start in a cityoffice, I traveled to India andSoutheast Asia to study the formsand architecture of traditional cul-tures. I completed my universitythesis entitled ‘Spatial Extension

and the Sense of Place’ and thisled me to study comparative reli-gions and the works of ReneGuenon and AnandaCoomaraswamy. After thisrather serious study based onIndian philosophy and Sufi cos-mologies I submitted my thesisto the university with the ratherhopeless conclusion that mysense of place was cast in a mod-ern world and bereft of the pos-sibility to meet an authenticMaster necessary to lead one ona path to enlightenment. Notgreat stuf f for one graduatingafter seven years of study andbeing unleashed into the work-ing life of a city and the bustle ofa modern architectural metropo-lis.I did however graduate and foundemployment with an excellentarchitect who was very influ-enced by the work of the utopianAmerican architect Frank LloydWright and to whom I owe somereally good training. After fiveyears working in Sydney I stillhad this sense of loss about placein the modern world until I dis-covered the work of the Italianarchitect Carlo Scarpa. I resolvedto go to Venice to study this archi-tect’s work. Just before leavingSydney, this good friend of mineinvited me to a dinner to meet anItalian art teacher from Venice. Ithought this was a good opportu-nity to learn something about theworks of Scarpa in Venice and totry out my few words of Italian. Iarrived to my friend’ s place fordinner with a big book ofScarpa’s work and when I openedthe book to show Giuliana, theimmediate reaction was a gasp “that’s the place I met my TibetanMaster”. Rinpoche had taught atthe Querini Stampalia museum, one of Scarpa’s noted restorationworks in Venice. The words“Tibetan Master” stuck in mymind and later that night drivinghome it rained so hard that the

road suddenly flooded almost tothe window level of the doors ofthe car. This left a deep impres -sion on me that seemed somehowconnected to this mysteriousTibetan Master in Italy and meet-ing Giuliana. I left for overseas in 1987 andworked in Greece for that yearbefore arriving in Venice andmeeting up again with Giuliana. Ifelt r eserved a bout a sking t oomany questions about the TibetanMaster, I noticed she was obvi -ously very dedicated to thisTeacher living in Tuscany. Ithought if it was the right path forme it would work out, besides Ididn’t speak Italian. I left Veniceand traveled to Rome and then toLondon and worked there in1988at a great job before being caughtout by customs without a currentwork permit. I had to leaveLondon and went to live in Paris.I was desperate after somemonths because I had no work, and one night, it was full moonand acting on a sudden impulse, Itelephoned an architect I had metthe year before in Rome and theimmediate response was we havea job for you, come to Rometomorrow. This already seemedimprobable and again I wonderedabout the Tibetan Master living in

Italy. I spent six months working onthe project in Rome and learningItalian and following an unsatis-factory love af fair, I decided toreturn to Australia to start a prop-er working career based inSydney. Very soon after arrivingin Sydney, that same good friendof mine rang and invited me to adinner to meet an Italian womanvisiting Sydney. During the din-ner I asked her why she was inAustralia and her response wasshe had come to attend a retreatwith her Tibetan Master fromItaly. I was speechless, could thatpossibly be the same TibetanMaster I heard about in the samesituation three years before? I lentGiovanna my car to travel toMelbourne to attend the retreatand she returned with a book forme, Primordial Experience byManjusrimitra. This bookremained next to my bed all thatyear; I was struck with the quali-ty and scholarship of this Tibetantext and commentaries and wassatisfied without doubt that herewas something authentic. Meanwhile an architect friend inRome was asking me to me tostart an architectural practice inRome so I thought to return, nowconvinced I should meet t hisMaster. The day I arrived inRome, without any prior arrange-ment, I went to the house of myfriend in Rome and there wasGiovanna having lunch and aboutto attend a teaching of the TibetanMaster that afternoon. I went withher, she introduced me to theMaster and I remember lookinginto the Master ’s eyes and seeingsomething extraordinarily power-ful. I hadn’t understood anythingvery much of the Italian Teachingand I didn’ t feel prepared. But Istayed in Rome, started regularhatha yoga, became vegetarian, tried to learn meditation and ofcourse it was all a bit like tastelesssoup.

It wasn’t until a year later in 1991that I felt prepared and traveled toTuscany to ask the Master if Icould receive his Teachings. Iarrived at the yellow house ofMerigar and was struck by thekindness of Michelle, of Gior gio,of Clara. There were no sched -uled teachings and the Masterwas in retreat. The next day Ireturned to the yellow house andwas encouraged to attend aGanapuja at the Gonpa. Theredidn’t seem to be many peoplethere and I walked down to theGonpa alone to attend somethingI had no idea about. As I arrivedat the Gonpa I turned around andwalking down the hill some dis-tance behind me were just twopeople. As they approached talk-ing together , I recognized thatthese two were Giuliana andGiovanna who I had met sepa-rately at my friend’ s house inSydney so many years before. That afternoon Rinpoche had fin-ished his retreat and was teachingthe Vajra Dance at theCappanone, I plucked up mycourage to ask if I could receiveTeachings. His response was ofcourse, I am teaching manyretreats, prepare yourself…Many wonderfuI things happenedthat weekend, and late Sundayevening I returned to Rome by carwith Andrea dell’Angello andYuden Namkhai, we talked aboutASIA and the situation in Tibet. We started immediately to pre-pare the projects of ASIA in Tibetand I remained living in Romeuntil 1998 working on these pro-jects and started the extraordinarylife of following Rinpoche’ sadvice prepare yourself.
