DAWSON CREEK — Tourism Dawson Creek is in a fight for its life after city council voted to end its contract in October.
But it's getting some help from the Chamber of Com-merce.
The current contract is set to expire on May 31, what happens after that is unclear—there is no plan to deliver tourism services in Dawson Creek.
The timing couldn't be worse, Chamber of Commerce execu-tive director Kathleen Connolly said, because after the May long weekend is when tourist season kicks into high gear. And the the low Canadian dollar could make for a particularly busy summer.
"It may have been a knee jerk reaction to try and find budget cuts," Connolly said.
“Regardless, we feel this con-tract needs to be extended so that our businesses can benefit (and so) we can come up with a new model that everybody agrees on.”
Council asked city staff to work on a report detailing what tourism services would look like in the wake of the decision. On Monday, acting mayor Mark Rogers said the decision not to renew the contract was made for “financial considerations.”
The city has been looking to trim costs to deal with its deficit, known as the fiscal gap.
Tourism costs the city around $500,000 a year.
Connolly said she wasn’t sure the city left itself enough time to come up with a plan.
“To get that done by May next year would nothing short of a miracle,” she said.
Austin Weaver, tourism de-velopment co-ordinator with Tourism Dawson Creek, is wast-ing no time rallying support.
On Wednesday, he brought together local businesses and other partners, including the City of Dawson Creek, to ex-plain the implications of losing the service.
“We got an indication of the value or tourism in the commu-nity,” he said. “We also came out with a recognition that Tourism Dawson Creek has to be a little more financially sustainable.”
That could mean charging visitors for local attractions and programs.
Weaver said that he gets the sense there is “a bit of a misun-derstanding” of what his office does.
People “understand the value of tourism,” he added, “but they may not understand what I do. We are an integral part of this community.”
With important dates on the horizon like the 75th anniversa-ry of the Alaska Highway, which happens to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Canada, “we need somebody to plan how we are going to capitalize on that opportunity,” Connolly said.
Weaver and the newly-formed Tourism Advisory Board is expected to make a proposal at the Dec. 21 council meeting in support of extending the con-tract past its May expiry date.
“From our perspective you can’t just not support this in-dustry, and it’s a big industry in our community,” Connolly said.

DAWSON CREEK — A 21-year-old man accused of killing a calf in the Groundbirch Community Pasture has been sentenced to six months house arrest.
Cody Lee Housego, one of three men charged with shooting and butchering three calves in the pasture July 26, entered guilty pleas on seven charges in Dawson Creek provincial court Friday.
He has been ordered to pay two ranch-ers $1,000 each in restitution for the calf he killed.
An RCMP constable tracked Housego and the two other men to his home in Dawson Creek after receiving a tip. The of-
ficer found the hind leg, hip and shoulder sections of the animals in a box in his truck after obtaining a search warrant.
Travis Wiebe and William Blanchard, the co-accused, are set to be arraigned Dec. 15.
On the morning of July 26, an acquain-tance received a call from Housego, saying he was stranded around 10 kilometres into the Groundbirch pasture with a flat tire.
When he arrived, the man saw Housego and the co-accused with the remains of the calves.
After deciding what he’d seen was “not kosher,” the man called the police and Cat-tlemen’s Association, Crown prosecutor Tamera Golinsky said.

and two witnesses were able to identify the remains of the calves as belonging to Clinton and Gina Odden, and Victor Remple.
Somehow, the three accused were able to make it back to Dawson Creek, where they were arrested.
Golinsky said the case law on how to sentence people convicted of steal-ing cattle dates back to the 1970s. In the past, offenders in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan had been given jail time.
She cited two cases which stressed
the importance of deterring people from abusing community pastures, which she described as systems “built on trust.”
However, Housego’s guilty plea saved the court considerable time, which the judge looked upon favourably.
During the first four months of his sentence, Housego will only be allowed to leave home for work or medical emer-gencies. The conditional sentence order bans him from having firearms for five years. Housego was also ordered to stay away from Wiebe and Blanchard.

Merry Christmas from Lori Lalonde MortgagesHey everyone! We’re well into December now, and you know as well as I how quickly the rest of the month will go by. So before we all get swept up in the rush of buying presents, making plans, writing cards, and baking treats, I thought it would be nice to refl ect on where we’ve come since the start of 2015.
For starters, January saw the bank of Canada drop its overnight lending rate by a quarter of a percent, which the Big 6 Banks responded to by dropping their lending rates by just 0.15%. Despite that, mortgage rates for Canadians were the lowest they’d been in years, and the market in Northern BC especially was absolutely on fi re. That was made particularly evident the very next month, when BC’s 2015 budget marked it as the only province in Canada with a surplus – and one of almost a billion dollars, at that. And remember, not only was the surplus double what it was predicted to be by fi nance experts, but we’re expected to run a surplus for the next three years. So even though these last few months have been a little rougher, we came into the downturn from the strongest possible position.
In fact, in July the Bank of Canada dropped the overnight lending rate by another quarter of a percentage point. The Banks responded the same as last time, with a drop in their own lending rates of a measly 0.10%. Any cut is a net positive for Canadians, however, and as I explained a bunch of times this past year, the Big 6 Banks aren’t Canadians’ only option when it comes to mortgages. I have access to over 40 lenders who are willing to provide the perfect rate, and I was able to match up a record number of clients with those lenders in 2015.
That success, and the continued success throughout Northern BC, came despite the falling oil prices at the end of summer. As I pointed out then, even oil-sensitive regions like ours were faring pretty well. As a matter of fact, this has been one of my most successful years ever as a mortgage broker, for a whole slew of reasons (and if that doesn’t convince you that our housing market is alright, I’m not sure what will). Not only did I have the opportunity to hire several talented people to my team, but I opened my own offi ce in the heart of downtown Dawson Creek. All of this has only been possible with the support of the North, and all my friends and colleagues in this beautiful province. My year here has been so wonderfully rewarding, and I’m committed to having a whole lot more of them.
Really, that’s what I wanted to leave you all with as we make our way into 2016. I know some of you are wary of the new federal government, and the lower price of oil is obviously a concern for most of us, but the important thing is that Northern BC is as strong as it’s ever been. We started the year with a bang, and that’s what we’re gonna do next year, too – slightly higher interest rates or not. I’m so thankful to be a part of this incredible, hard-working community, and I look forward to fi nding the perfect mortgage for as many people as possible in the coming year (and years)! As always, my number is (250) 782-9665 and my phone is always on. My new year’s resolution is to continue doing as much as I can to make this province great – and I know that’s yours too.
Merry Christmas everybody, and Happy New Year!

“Key” Strategies For A Safe New Year’s Celebration:
BECAUSE SAFETY IS KEY,PLEASE DON’TDRINK AND DRIVE!
A holiday season is coming bringing much celebration,With good friends and good times and free-fl owing libation --So party on hearty, but leave driving alone,Because we want to see you get safely home!
It probably comes as no surprise that more traffi c fatalities due to drunk driving occur at the New Year
than any other time, but of course, you should never drink and drive. With your safety in mind, these community sponsors urge you to review these important tips forhosting or attending a safe celebration!
• Plan an alcohol-free celebration – Host a fondue or “make your own” ice cream sundae party as a fresh alternative. Add some fun party games to keep guests entertained without drinking!
• Check your keys with the host – This is an eff ective strategy for giving the host some control over inebriated guests.
• Keep the number of a taxi company handy – A good tip for both party guests and hosts alike.
• Off er to drive a guest home – Start the New Year off right by performing a good deed and help keep drunk drivers off the road.
• Appoint a designated driver – Use the buddy system and you can return the favor next time.
• Provide lots of snacks to party guests – Drinking on an empty-stomach rapidly increases alcohol’s debilitating eff ects.
• Post transportation info on party invites – Include information for public transportation, car pools and taxi company phone numbers.
• Don’t let a friend drive drunk – Take the car keys away or use one of the strategies above to see your friends safely home.

"They used to do a lot of shows, and raised a lot of money for different charities." The group performed in the dark under black lights, using illuminated gloves to spell out words and create images.

It is found in fresh foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, oranges, bananas, cantaloupes. dates, dairy products, nuts, whole grains, legumes. lean meats, peanuts. almonds and dried apricots. Warning! Potassium can interact with several drugs. If you are taking medications to control your blood pressure. talk to your pharmacist to make sure that you can safely increase your potassium intake.
Manage your weight Hypertension can be caused or worsened by excess weight. Try to maintain a healthy weight. If you need to lose some excess weight, talk to your dietician who will suggest ways to modify your diet. Once you reach your healthy weight, try to maintain it by eating balanced meals.
Limit your alcohol consumption There is a strong link between hypertension and consumption of 4 or more drinks per day. It is recommended that you limit your consumption of alcohol to a maximum of 2 drinks per day and consumption for men should not exceed 14 drinks per week and 9 drinks per week for women (one drink is equal to a glass of wine, one beer or one ounce of spirits). Always watch your diet: it has a strong impact on your health!
Nutritional approachHypertension increases the risk of cardiovascular
disease and stroke. Oftentimes, the cause of hypertension cannot be determined. Although changing your diet may not eliminate the need for medication, it can, through a few simple measures, enhance the eff ectiveness of your treatment and may even help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
The DASH Diet The DASH or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet is an eating plan aimed at preventing and controlling high blood pressure. The focus of this diet is on increasing one’s intake of fruits, vegetables, low fat milk and dairy products, whole grains, chicken, fi sh and nuts, and decreasing one’s intake of fat, red meat and sugar.
Reduce your sodium intake Eating too much sodium can increase blood pressure. If your pressure is already high, you can help reduce it by decreasing your sodium intake. The Canadian Hypertension Education Program recommends limiting sodium intake to 2,000 mg (5 g of salt) per day.
You can limit your salt intake by avoiding very salty foods, such as:
• Delicatessen and smoked meats • Chips, cookies and salted nuts • Large amounts of cheese (except cottage cheese
and salt-free cheese) • Vegetable or tomato juice • Seasonings (celery salt, onion salt, garlic salt) • Olives and pickles • Canned soups, soup mix, condensed, cubed or
concentrated consommes and bouillon (such as Bovril®, Oxo®)
Tips to reduce sodium (salt) consumption: • Choose low-or reduced-sodium, or no-salt-added
versions of foods and condiments when available. • Choose fresh, frozen, or canned (low-sodium or
no-salt-added) vegetables. • Use fresh poultry. fi sh, and lean meats, rather
than canned, smoked. or processed types. • Choose ready-to-eat breakfast cereals that are
lower in sodium. • Limit cured foods (such as bacon and ham), foods
packed in brine (such as pickles, pickled vegetables. olives. and sauerkraut), and condiments (such as mustard, ketchup. and soya sauce).
• Cook rice, pasta, and hot cereals without salt. Cut back on instant or fl avored rice, pasta, and cereal mixes.

Sheila Barnes, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, passed away on November 27, 2015, with her loving family by her side in Windsor, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Ron Barnes, loving mother to Laura and cherished Nanny of grandson Connor. Sheila will be sadly missed by her sister Valerie Leduc, brother Chris Wisson(Carmen), brothers-in-law Fred Barnes, Jean Guy Vivier, Gino Chiesa(Joan) and all her many friends who knew and loved her. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and their children. Sheila was a dynamic, caring person wherever she called home. As a tireless volunteer, she gave her time freely to many charitable organizations. Sheila was an R.N. for over 30 years and cared for many local citizens with kindness and compassion in our hospital and as Dr. Boronowski’s nurse. She helped start the Hospice and Palliative Care Society here, served as chair for the local Hospital Foundation and worked hard for the NDP Party here and in Ontario. A Family Memorial Visitation was held Saturday December, 5 2015 in Windsor. In Sheila’s memory, her family has requested that donations to the Canadian Diabetes Organization would be appreciated if you so desire.
