The Missing Years- 1956-57 and 1957-58: Enrollment Statistics

THIS IS the second of three enrollment statistics reports which will bring up-to-date the figures for the accredited library schools. A similar series of tables will be printed soon for the academic year of 1959-60. The first report appeared in the Summer, I960, issue of the Journal of Education for Librarianship.

The statistics which follow are not significantly different than those appearing earlier. The range of degrees granted still spreads widely from a low of nine to a high of 161 during 1956-57 and eight to 180 during 1957-58. The average number of students graduated from the accredited schools continues to rise each year and reached 44 for 1957-58. In 1959-60, it had increased again to 52.

A new table, XV, Semester Credit Hour Totals, appears here for the first time in its present form. It should be useful in comparing the growth of a particular school and in comparing the differences between schools. It is also a more accurate representation of size and of the teaching load carried by a particular school. As an example, note that during 1957-58 Columbia offered a total of 5,542 semester credit hours during the academic year; while only four schools, Southern California, Michigan, Illinois, and Florida, were beyond an offering of 2,500 semester credit hours. In other words, Columbia was twice the size, by this measure, of such schools, as Michigan, Illinois, and Florida and over 2,200 hours larger than Southern California, the school nearest Columbia in size by this measure.

These figures are most useful when they can appear on a regular basis as close to the collection date as it is possible to publish them. The statistics for 1961-62 are being collected now and will appear in the near future.
