The WRC The Writing and Reading Center, in MLK 118, is where you will spend your writing lab hour (50 minutes) practicing skills from class. Every Three Weeks, You Will Have a NEW Track-it Packet (TP#1, TP#2, etc.) to Outline WHAT TO DO in the WRC. Sometimes, your assigned activity for the week will be a Directed Learning Assignment (DLA) which is a downloadable handout with reading and instruction on a skill and some practice that you can then go over with an instructor or tutor. Sometimes, your assigned activity will be to talk to an instructor or tutor about your ideas and organization for an essay or maybe even to look at a draft of your essay. Each week there will be a specific assignment that is the same for all of you, but some weeks I may add assignments that are just for you based on something I've seen in your writing we should work on. You can always come see me in office hours about WRC materials if you ran out of time in your WRC hour, but your TP work should happen mostly in the WRC. The WRC has different resources you can use during your hour there: English and ESL professors, trained peer tutors, computers/printers, instructional activities and DLAs (Directed Learning Activities). 1. We reserved your spot in the WRC when you scheduled yourself for a specific day and time -- this is the time you need to attend (unfortunately, we don't have the space to accommodate multiple options or make-ups -- plus, we have to report regular attendance like class attendance). 2. So you don't lose your spot in the lab or in the class, you need to be sure to attend the lab for the full session in the first two weeks of the semester (.84 in WebAdvisor minimum) or you may be dropped. After week 3, lab attendance and participation is still a required part of the class, but will be accounted for in your grade, not enrollment. 3. Track-it Packets Other weeks, your assigned activity will be to go through an essay I returned to you and fix the mechanical mistakes (things like grammar or punctuation, not the big idea stuff) so you can practice revising your own work. You should go over that with an instructor or tutor. Page 5

WRC HourMaking the Most of Your

Work with instructors and/or tutors as often as you can. The best way to make sure thishappens is to sign up on the sign-in sheet as soon as you get into the WRC, and have a questionor focus for your session in mind before you are called up (before you even get to the WRC.)The instructors, tutors, and lab aides are all working in the WRC to help students, but some daysand hours are busier and louder than others. This can be overwhelming for you -- and the staffand faculty. Following the conduct rules of the WRC will help, but if you find that someone onduty during your hour is regularly tough to work with, please let me know so we can come upwith a good strategy for maximizing the help you can get during your hour. The WRC will provide you with info on all of their conduct rules and other procedures for usingcomputers and materials, but a few key rules that come up a lot are listed here:

Food and drink are not allowed in the WRC (though a resealable water container that youkeep in your bag is fine.)Cell phone conversations are not allowed -- please have your phone off or in text-only vibratemode in the WRC. In general, loud conversations are too disruptive in the WRC. If you are working with aclassmate at the round tables, that's okay, but keep your conversations low so those who areworking on their individual writing projects are not disturbed. The WRC is designed and funded to support students doing work for English, ESL, andReading classes. The materials, computers, faculty, and staff are all funded and trained to helpyou with work in those classes. Please use this hour to get a big chunk of your weekly reading, writing, or WRC specific assignments done. Work for other classes should happen in thelibrary or elsewhere on campus.
