The ConflictCommuting students are commuting to save moneyUniversity has very little money to maintain free commuter lotThere is a conflict of interest

From the Universitys PerspectiveCost of commuter lot maintenance is $310,000 annuallyContributed by three different departmentsIowa State CenterThe Athletic DepartmentDepartment of Public Safety(DPS) parking division DPS contributes an additional $260,000 annually to subsidize the Orange Route

From the Universitys PerspectiveVery little tuition money is used for the commuter lotNo revenue is produced through the commuter lotMoney is needed to maintain Cyrides Orange RouteCyride is rated number 1 in small transit bus systems

From the Students PerspectivePaying commuter lot parking is contrary to what the parking division stands for It is counter productive to commuters purpose of commutingAverage debt of graduating senior is $27,000 Limited space for students that dont want to pay for parkingAttempting to force commuting students to pay for parking creates more problems than it creates

MediationHave students pay a minimal fee of $25 per semesterThis would generate $300,000 dollars annually for mantainence In addition, raise prices on parking tickets on campusThis may not make students happy, but we have a responsibility to the Ames community in which we live

Collin Delano, Ryan Eilertson, Joel LanusEnglish 250, RN, Professor Domini20 April 2013Erick Vespestads Presentation ResponseWe all felt Erick did good job on his presentation. His PowerPoint was created well and he did a good job at presenting it. As far as visuals go he picked a background that was fitting to his topic. It was a perfectly relevant background that enhances the slide without distracting from the text (Lanus). Even though it was a good background there was one minor issue. The background picture was fine but when the text got towards the bottom it became hard to read (Delano). On his slides he had an appropriate amount of text. He did not read what the words said; he read what they mean to the viewer (Lanus). His voice was easy to understand and clearly conveyed his points from the slide (Eilertson). When he spoke he also conveyed that he knew his subject well. Very clear knowledge of what he was talking about (Lanus). In regards to logic; this is a very relevant topic, especially to us students, and he did a great job presenting both sides equally before mediating the situation (Delano). Erick listed most dollar amounts when cost was brought up and provided other key statistics that were needed (Eilertson). Collin raised a good question and idea in regards to Ericks mediation. Collins question was, by cutting the commuter lot or making students pay for parking wouldn't it help push students to be more environmentally friendly and drive less? This could lead to Ames adding more bike paths and Cyride expanding to include several more routes (Delano). Again we all felt that overall Erick did a good job on his presentation and mediating between the two sides on a topic that is very important to students.
