Pastor’s Ponderings From Rev. Calob Rundell

These are divided times. We must not segregate ourselves or others.

Friends of Jesus, sisters and brothers in the Holy Spirit, my relatives through our One Creator:

When you are reading this at the beginning of November 2016, we are mere days away from our nation engaging in an election that will go down in history. The 2016 election has been marked by rancor, some violence, lots of accusations, words I could never share in a church newsletter and partisan distrust that will disturbingly reverberate for years to come.

In the Lord’s unending mercy, may Wednesday November 9th be a day when we begin the work of healing.

This election, more than any other in living American memory, has divided us. The vile with which we have attacked each other, especially on social media, is a sin for which we must repent. The political interests and their backers benefit from pitting us against each other, but their short-lived gain comes at the expense of our long-term relationships with our neighbors.

As followers of Jesus, as disciples of the One that God sent to redeem all of humanity, we must reject this division. We must maintain loving relationships with

those we disagree with and those who are different from us.

As followers of Jesus, we try to live our lives by the example that he set. In the Gospels, we constantly see Jesus interacting with those that were different from him: Gentiles, Samaritans, women, lepers, sinners, Romans, people living in graveyards, etc. In the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), we hear

Jesus tell us that our common humanity is more important than our flawed partisan divisions.

Jesus did not let any sort of division keep him from being Jesus. Likewise, we must not let any division keep us from following Jesus. And if we are following Jesus, our hope is not in the outcome of any election or the leadership of any political figure; our hope is in the reconciled relationship Jesus makes possible with God and with each other.

In the Lord’s unending mercy, may Wednesday November 9th be a day when we begin the work of healing. Pray for those that have won office. Pray for those that have lost elections. Make an effort to hug or care for someone of a different political persuasion than yourself.

And keep following Jesus.

Category Definitions

Receipts (Unrestricted): The church’s receipts are like your own

paycheck or pension check. Our ongoing receipts consist primarily of

pledged and non-pledged offerings and loose plate offerings. Gifts given

specifically to our General Fund, Faith Fund, proceeds from our

fundraising efforts through The Pig Roast and Fudge Force are also part of

our receipts. These receipts are unrestricted in their use for the church.

Other Receipts (Restricted): We often receive receipts specified for

outreach efforts such as the Samaritan Fund, the Endowment Fund,

UMCOR, Summer Raft Guide Dinner Program, building use, as well as

certain fundraising efforts such as the Windows Restoration Campaign

All these receipts are restricted for the use intended and are not subject to

the apportionment paid to the conference, nor do they cover monthly

expenses.

Apportionments: A portion (13%) of our monthly receipts (unrestricted)

listed above is then paid to the Rocky Mountain Conference to support the

wider mission of the United Methodist Church. This apportionment is

paid each month for the receipts of the previous month. The

apportionment amount paid that is reflected in our September finances

was based on August receipts.

Expenses - Operating: The church has many of the same expenses that

we all have in our own homes. We have to pay for insurance, utilities,

minor repairs, supplies as well as payroll taxes for our employees.

Expenses – Pastor Salary & Benefits, Parsonage, Staff Wages: The

church also pays the pastor’s salary and benefits, employs an office

administrator, organist, choir director and a custodian. Our parsonage,

the home for our pastor, has expenses such as utilities, insurance, and the

mortgage payment.

As you can see, we are currently at a

deficit of $5792.00 for the year.

At the time of this article, we are more than three quarters through

2016 and your faithful financial support is sincerely appreciated. If

you are interested in making an additional financial gift to the

church, please consider giving to our Faith Fund. Your

contributions to the Faith Fund will greatly help to reduce our

deficit. Your generous giving makes possible everything that goes

on in the life of this church.

Church Finance Update continued from page 3…

Thanks to your generous financial support of our Parsonage, we

have been able to pay an additional $115,000 on the parsonage

mortgage.

Thank you to those who have pledged to pay an additional

mortgage payment in full. Our monthly mortgage payment is

$1470.91. Each month, this payment we make, is used for debt

reduction on the mortgage. We recently made two more

additional pledged mortgage payments, bringing our current

loan balance to: $71,737.82. The original loan amount was

$204,000.00! We are SO grateful!

Thank you again, for your faithful financial support. If you have

any questions about the church finances and/or the status of your

2016 pledges, please speak with our Finance Secretary, Paul

Wilson. You may contact Paul at: (630) 730-8590 or

[email protected].

Remember …to purchase your Safeway

cards from Barb Williams or at the Church office.

As we approach this time of the year, when many of us are planning delicious meals for family and friends, please consider using our Safeway gift cards for your purchases at Safeway.

You can also use Safeway cards to purchase other gift cards for Christmas gifts. Your Safeway card can also be used at the Safeway pharmacy.

You may purchase a reloadable gift card for $10 and it has $10 available on it. Then just have the cashier (before scanning your items) add your desired amount to the gift card and you’re ready to go! You can also do this at the Customer Service desk before shopping! We also have gift cards in denominations of $50 or $100.

Our church receives 5% of your purchases. This is a very convenient fundraiser for our church and your participation is greatly appreciated!

If you have any questions, please see Barb Williams or you may inquire in the office.

Your gift cards are waiting for you….

Will We Have Fudge This Year?

We are now into the season where, traditionally, our Fudge Force Fundraiser is well under

way with its preparation. Unfortunately, that is not the case this year. At this time, we are not sure there will be a Fudge Force Fundraiser this holiday season.

The Fudge Force effort is in need of new leadership, as Tom and Donna Henning have moved and no one else has stepped up to coordinate this project. Tom and Donna have provided us with all their information regarding a step-by-step process to ensure the success of this church fundraiser… AND ….they are available to assist by phone as needed. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in helping to coordinate this effort, please let Calob or Licia know. Many people have said they could help, but we need someone to oversee the overall project. We are grateful for the leadership that Tom and Donna provided for the Fudge Force, and for all those who helped them to share that responsibility for many years. However, if we are to have “fudge” this season, we’ll need to act immediately to bring it all together. If we do not have the Fudge Force Fundraiser this holiday, we’ll need to give some thought to another fundraiser opportunity for our church, as the Fudge Force has been a very beneficial one for us, in years past.

If you are interested or have any questions, please call the office at (719) 539-2755 or stop by and see us.

EVERYONE IS INVITED BRING A FRIEND!

Kairos Prison Ministry By: Dr. David Hearn

Our God cannot only be awesome but can be very surprising in how He presents Himself to us in totally unexpected ways. Members of our congregation recently had that experience when they participated in the first ever Kairos Prison Ministry event held at the Buena Vista Correctional Facility. Kairos is a Greek word meaning “the opportune time for something to happen.” Roger and Lisa Hilbig, who had previously participated in a number of Kairos weekends in Texas and Colorado prisons, helped to lead the event and the recruitment efforts to form the team.

There is not enough room in this article to tell stories of the impact this ministry is having at BVCF with the inmates. If you want to know more, you will just have to get involved. One of the inmates said that when he came to the prison, he began praying that the people of the surrounding valley would show up in the prison to minister with the inmates. His prayers were answered with Kairos.

The plan is to have two Kairos weekend events a year as well as ongoing Prayer and Share small groups almost weekly to be conducted by the inmates themselves. If you would like to know more please contact Pastor Calob, Roger and Lisa Hilbig, Burrell Welton, or David and Cynthia Hearn but be prepared to listen for a while. It was that meaningful.

STEWARDSHIP 2017

We recently mailed out our Stewardship 2017 letter and pledge commitment card. If you did not receive yours in the mail, please let us know and we will get one to you. Information is also available in our church office and on the information table in Century Hall.

This year’s Commitment Sunday will be held on Sunday, November 20th. Please plan to attend on this day, as we bless our 2017 pledges and participate in the Commitment Liturgy during our worship service. Pledge cards will be turned in during this special time. If you are unable to attend on Commitment Sunday, you may mail your pledge card to Salida United Methodist Church, PO Box 945, Salida, CO; Attention: Finance Secretary.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration regarding your financial support of our church for this next year. It is through your generosity, that we are able to do God’s work through this beautiful community of faith.

Please know that your pledge information is held in strict confidence. If you have any questions, please speak with our Finance Secretary: Paul Wilson. You may reach him via email at: [email protected] or call on his cell: (719) 221-1923.

The Permanent Endowment Fund of Salida UMC

As we approach the end of the year, it is a good time to consider gifts to the Permanent Endowment Fund in honor of or in memory of loved ones. The fund was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing funding for outreach and programs that are not provided for in the regular budget. This funding comes from 90% of the earnings on the investments and the principle cannot be spent. The funds are invested with the Rocky Mountain United Methodist Foundation and High Country Bank. Expenditures from the Fund must be approved by the Endowment Committee. Past expenditures have gone for missions, expenses for the picnic with the Presbyterian Church following our joint worship service in the park, travel expenses to see “The Thorn “ last Easter and the initial contract for the CCLI license that allows us to show video clips on our sanctuary screens.

The current balance in all the funds is $63,707.52. The amount available for use at present is $2,196.68 and we expect to add significantly to that at the end of the year. If you have questions please contact David Hearn at 719-530-9229. Gifts to the Fund may be made through the Church Office.
