NAACP EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE RETREAT SUMMARY The 2019 NAACP Executive Committee Retreat was held on March 23, at the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College. This mandatory training was designed to help familiarize officers and committee chairpersons on the new NAACP Constitution and Bylaws: that provide a blueprint for what we should be doing from our local branches. Committees have begun their strategic planning based on the most pressing and long-term needs with-in the County. Please see the list of committee chairperson and reach out to the branch for additional information. If you feel that you are not fully cognizant of what we do, we are still seeking members to serve on these committees. With everything going on in the county, and the national spotlight, now more than ever, we need you! The more people we have participating, the more impact we can make. For example, did you know that our County Executive and County Council are holding Racial Equity and Social Justice seminars across the County? The community input from these sessions will help in-form them of what priorities our citizens have? This will have an impact on the allocations of monetary and other resources. We need to be represented at these sessions. All participants left the retreat feeling more knowledgeable about NAACP and its branch programs and processes. The training proved to be an exceptional opportunity of learning, sharing, collaborating, and strategic planning. Please see our website and face book for additional branch events.

Dear Members:

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and the ACLU of Maryland

are seeking your help with an investigation of unconstitutional stop and search practices by the

Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD). The lawyers conducting the investigation have

heard of at least one incident in which MCPD officers pulled over a car occupied by African Ameri-

can individuals, ordered them out of the car, and unlawfully detained them on the side of the road

while officers unlawfully searched their car with a canine. This conduct by MCPD officers appears

to be part of a pattern of unlawfully detaining and searching the cars of members of racial and eth-

nic minority groups.

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee and the ACLU are hoping to change the practices of the

Montgomery County Police Department through what they uncover in this investigation. Infor-

mation from community members with similar experiences could be very helpful in achieving re-

form.

If you have specific information about similar conduct by Montgomery County Police Department

officers that you are willing to share with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee and the ACLU,

please contact Samantha Weaver at [email protected].
