SNOWDOUN RESIDENTS PLAN FUND-RAISING BARBECUE

Snowdoun Community Center and Snowdoun Men’s Club will hold a combined meeting

Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Snowdoun Clubhouse.

Final plans will be made at this time for the annual barbecue sponsored by the

Community Center, which is the center’s chief fund-raising event of the year.

Committee chairmen and members will be announced for the barbecue, scheduled for

April 21. Tickets will be distributed to members Tuesday night so they may be put on sale at

once.

John Walter Stowers, Men’s Club president, announced that a film, “Dial the Miles,” will

also be shown at the Tuesday night meeting. The film, loaned by Bell Telephone Co. will

describe direct distance dialing which will go into effect in the Montgomery area in July.

AROUND THE COUNTY: George Keahey has taken over operation of the filling

station at Snowdoun formerly operated by the McGhee brothers . . . The Montgomery County

High School senior class will present the class play, “Father Was a Housewife,” on April 20 . . .

Applications are being taken by Wallace Locke, Lanier vocational agriculture teacher, for an

evening welding course with classes on the following dates: April 11, 12, 19 . . . Old Wetumpka

Highway, 4 to 6 p.m.

FRIDAY: Farm and City grocery, Mobile Heights, 1 to 6 p.m.

TELEPHONE FIRM EMPLOYEES TO HEAR PROGRESS REPORT

Members of Mon-Cre Telephone Cooperative will here reports on the growth of the

system and proposed expansion of lines and buildings at the annual meeting, scheduled for

Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sellers building in Ramer.

They will also elect new directors to succeed Steve Landers of Highland Home. D. H.

Rodgers of Pine Level and Reuben Ruff of LaPine, whose terms expire.

Members of the nominating committee are R. F. Cowles, Ramer; M. K. Paul, Pine level;

H. T. Taylor, Highland Home; W. B. Spear, laPine; and M. W. Turnipseed, Shopton.

C. E. Sellers, President and Larry Menefee, manager, will lmake reports to the

membership, which runs in excess of 600. The Cooperative went into operation in 1954 with

172 members. Members will be given an opportunity to hold a question and answer period.

RABIES CLINIC: Rabies clinics are announced as follows by Dr. Guy Phelps, rabies

inspector:

COUNTY CATTLEMEN TO TOUR EXPERIMENTAL FIELD STATION

A field tour of the Black Belt Experiment Station at Marion Junction has been arranged

for Montgomery County Wednesday, County Agent Tom P. McCabe announces.

The trip will be for the primary purpose of observation and for a report on “creep”

feeding of beef calves.

Haynes Green, president of the Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Association, is

encouraging every cattleman in the county to make this trip in the interest of producing better

beef cattle by improved feeding methods.

The group will leave from Hooper’s Stockyards Wednesday at 8:15 a.m.

In addition to the report on creep feeding, the cattlemen will see the comparative results

of two systems of feeding spring and fall - dropped calves from weaning to 1,000 pounds

finished steers; the renovation of pastures for re-establishment of white clover; and chemical and

mechanical control of dropseed grass in Black Belt pastures.

RABIES CLINICS: Dr. Guy Phelps, county rabies inspector, announces the following

schedule of clinics for this week:

WEDNESDAY: Normandale Baptist Church, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

FRIDAY: State Teacher College, 12 noon t0 2 p.m.; Luke’s food store, south Hall street;

2 to 6 p.m.

Wilborn for their efforts in raising money, Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Harris for a refrigerator.

NANCY SOWELL WINS COUNTY 4-H CLUB TALENT CONTEST

By Mildred Smith

Nancy Sowell, a member of Dalraida Girls 4-H Club, won first place in the annual

Montgomery County 4-H talent contest Friday night at Huntingdon Chapel. She was awarded a

$5 cash prize by the Chamber of Commerce and an all expense trip to Auburn in June by

Pinedale Civic Club to participate in the state talent contest.

Her winning entry was a tap dance and a piano solo.

Second place winner in the senior division was Jo Anne Toomey, Snow-Hope 4-H Club

with a song, “Blue Hawaii.” She was awarded $4 by the Chamber of Commerce.

Third place and $3 was captured by Cindy and Dawn Gordon, Snow-Hope Club, with a

vocal number and fourth place went to Melina Darnell, Pike road, for a piano solo. She received

$2.

First place in the junior division and $5 was awarded Bonnie Usury Pike road, for a song.

Margie Owens and Shirley Amazon, Ramer, placed second and received $4. Five boys from

Pintlala, Kerry Brown, James Stanley, Albert Sharpe, Dwight Davis and Guy Safe, placed third

with a song and received $3. Dollie Burkhalter, Cantalou Girls Club, placed fourth with a vocal

solo and received $2.

All the cash prizes were awarded by the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce.

Leroy McLeod, Auburn University student and former 4-H member, was master of

ceremonies. Frank Noble and Mike Rutland, winners of the 1961 contest, entertained during the

SNOWDOUN MINISTER, WIFE HONORED AT FAREWELL PARTY

A Snowdoun minister who plans to retire in June, and his wife, were honored at a

surprise farewell party Thursday night by approximately 130 members of his church and other

residents of the community.

The Rev. U. L. Martin, pastor of Snowdoun Methodist Church for three years, and Mrs.

Martin were guests of honor at a dinner at the church and a program when they were crowned

“king and queen for the day.”

John Walter Stowers was master of ceremonies as the honor guests were showered with

gifts to set up housekeeping after having lived in parsonages since they were young people.

The minister, who will retire at the end of this conference year, and Mrs. Martin will go

to Camden to make their home in a new house now being constructed by the people of this little

town as a gift to them. He was a former pastor of Camden Methodist Church.

CATTLEMEN PLANNING TOUR OF PASTURELANDS IN COUNTY

A field tour for Montgomery County cattlemen to pastures in Montgomery County for

the purpose of receiving information on increasing income from their cattle operations is

planned for Wednesday. Haynes Green, president of the Montgomery County Cattlemen’s

Association, urges every cattle farmer in the county to take advantage of this tour.

The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Masonic Home on Vaughn road for preliminary

talks by Green County Agent Tom P. McCabe, and Asst. County Agent Ray Helms. From there

they will go to Miss Belle Young’s ranch to observe three groups of calves and review points of

herd management. At 11 a.m. they will move on to the McLemore plantation on Atlanta

Highway, where Jack McLemore and J. H. Sellers of Auburn will talk on “Wintering Calves.”

The tour will be concluded at the Dale Farms on Vaughn road where A. W. Dale and J. H.

Sellers will talk on “Finishing Cattle.”

CANTELOU COMMUNITY PLANS 2 FUND DRIVES

Two major fund-raising events are planned by Cantelou Community Center to finance

further development of the recreational facilities.

A barbecue is planned for Saturday and a horse show has been scheduled for June 2.

Charles H. Warner Jr. is general chairman for the barbecue and Mrs. Malcolm Hall is co-

chairman. The barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the community center, which is

located on picturesque Cantelou Hill 12 miles from the city.

Details of the horse show will be announced by Mrs. Malcolm Hall, chairman. First

entry to be registered was Emily Ussery and her horse, Dapper Dan, who were seen here last

year in the Southern Championship Charity Horse Show at the Coliseum.

First trophy donor to be announced is Mrs. B. C. Cappell of the Sones community, who

will give a silver tray.

JOTTINGS: Robert Cowles of Ramer was chosen the most outstanding football and

basketball player at Montgomery County High School . . . Mary Evelyn Brannan, Pinedale, was

awarded the Marion B. Cantelou chemistry prize at Huntingdon College . . . Walton Sellers of

Ramer-Dublin Road will receive his degree in forestry at the Auburn University commencement

in June . . . A new cyclone fence has been completed around Ebenezer Cemetery . . . Ann Athey

of Grady will represent Montgomery County High School at Girls State . . . Lorenzo Duncan,

CANTELOU COMMUNITY PLANS BIG HORSE SHOW JUNE 2

Trophies and ribbons will be awarded winners in 18 classes in the second annual horse

show to be sponsored by Cantelou Community Center on June 2.

Mrs. Malcolm Hall, chairman, reports 13 silver trophies already donated. The first was

given by Mrs. B. C. Cappell.

The entry fee in each $2 except for class will be barrel racing which will be $4.

Prizes in girls’ barrel racing will be: first, $15, second, $10; third, $5; and 4th, a ribbon.

The same prizes will be given winners in boys barrel racing. Winners in all other classes will

receive $10 for first place, $5 for second, $5 for third and ribbons for fourth.

One class will be for Cantelou Community Center members only. This will be pleasure

horses.

Other classes will be: jumpers, walking horses, open pleasure, barrel races, halter class

two years and under, parade class, ponies 46 inches and under, three-gaited, walking stallions,

geldings, and mares, palomino, open five-gaited, three-gaited ponies, eastern class open, walking

ponies, and quarter horse reigning.

The show will be at 7 p.m. at Cantelou Community Center on Cantelou Road. Requests

for entry should be mailed to Mrs. M. C. Hall, Old Selma Road, Route 2, Montgomery. Chicken

barbecue will be sold from 3 to 6 p.m.

MOUNT CARMEL SCHEDULES OPEN HOUSE FOR JUNE 10

Mount Carmel Methodist Church has scheduled June 10 for open house when visitors

and members are invited to see the new educational wing and repairs to the sanctuary. The hours

will be form 4 to 6 p.m.

In charge of arrangements will be Mrs. Hazel Norman, chairman, Mrs. Hattie McLaney

and Mrs. Betty Jean Alford.

The new wing, built during the past year, will provide classrooms, a kitchen, rest rooms,

and additional auditorium space. One of the former Sunday School rooms at the front of the

church has been remodeled into a study and office for the pastor. Another classroom and the

vestibule have been remodeled and redecorated, the sanctuary is being repainted and new light

fixtures are being installed.

Bob A. Guy has served as chairman of the building committee and other members are

Tom Alford and Shackelford Scaife.

The annual revival is scheduled for June 18-22, with services daily at 7:45 p.m. by the

Rev. Asa Boozer, pastor of McCann’s Chapel in Jackson.

The church will have its family camp at Blue Lake June 16-17.

Mose sellers, official board chairman, will represent the Mount Carmel church at the

annual Alabama-West Florida Conference. According to the annual report, the church has 139

members, 12 of whom were received in the past year. There is an average attendance of 63 at

Sunday School and 80 for preaching services. All conference and district requests have been

paid in full, and Mount Camel was one of three churches in the Troy district to accept and pay its

quota in full for higher education. During the conference year the church has paid out $10,000,

and the value of the property has been doubled.

The pastor is the Rev. Edwin Sells.

JOTTINGS: Iva Kate Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Hall of Snowdoun, was

featured in the Lipscomb Patrons Association annual fashion show May 17 at David Lipscomb

College in Nashville where she is a freshman . . . Miss Hall was one of the home economics

students asked to model her original costume . . . Mrs. Benjamin B. Griswold, who died in

Atmore Saturday, was one of Bullock County’s beloved teachers for many years . . . The former

Miss Lula Pritchett, she taught at Mount Hilliard, Macedonia and Inverness, and her pupils still

talk about how she inspired them to go on to college and make a success in the chosen

profession.

THREE REPRESENT RAMER AT BOYS’ STATE THIS WEEK

Representing Montgomery County High School this week at Boys State in Tuscaloosa

will be Lorenzo Duncan, Gus Boswell and Knox McLaney III, who were selected on their

scholarship records. Boys State which opened Sunday and will continue through Friday, is

sponsored by the Alabama Department American Legion.

Lorenzo Duncan, who led the boys in the junior class in scholarship, will be sponsored by

Montgomery Post No. 2, American Legion. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Jackson

Duncan of Ramer Route 1.

Gus Boswell, who had the second highest record in the junior class and Knox McLaney

III, who had the third highest, will be sponsored by Ramer Men’s Club. Their parents are Mr.

and Mrs. Frank Boswell, LaPine, Route 1 and Mr. and Mrs. Knox Mclaney Jr., Sprague.

Anne Athey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Whit Athey, Jr. of Grady, Rt. 2, who led the junior

girls in scholarship, will represent Montgomery County High School at Girls State. Her sponsor

will be the Montgomery Zonta Club.

Girls state which opens June 10 at Huntingdon Collee and extends through June 16 is

sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Dept. of Alabama.

College this fall. Mrs. S. E. Armstead of Ramer-Dublin Road will leave about the middle of

June for a visit to her son, Lt. S. E. Armstead Jr. and family in Japan.

RAMER PHONE FIRM LETS 3 CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS

Three separate contracts have been let by Mon-Cre Telephone Cooperative of Ramer for

new buildings, additions and reinforcements to the outside plant and enlargement of switchboard

facilities.

Pioneer Construction Co. Chattanooga, Tenn was awarded a contract for $137,082.30 to

construct 141 miles of new lines to serve additional subscribers in Montgomery, Crenshaw, Pike

and Bullock counties and to reinforce existing lines. Work will be started June 18 and completed

in 120 days.

The Pioneer Co was low bidder in a field of nine. Other bidders were: DeKalb

Contracting Co., Tucker, Ga., $137,794.43; Sandidge Construction Co., Memphis, Tenn.,

$142,161.36; Johnson Construction Co., Clarksdale, Miss., $147,899.78; Singleton - Leath

Construction Co., Centre, $148,387.36; Meador Contracting Co., Mobile, $156,879.24; K & B

Contractors, Tulsa, Okla., $157,358.92; Richards and Associates, Carrollton, Ga., $158,729.36;

Irby Construction Co., Jackson, Miss., $167,943.62.

Whaley Lumber Co., Troy, low bidder, at $17,650, was awarded a contract to build a new

warehouse on a lot recently purchased from the Cannon Estate, adjacent to the headquarters

building in Ramer. Also included in the contract is the modification of the Ramer and LaPine

exchanges to accommodate enlarged switchboard equipment. The contract calls for completion

of the work in 60 days.

Other bidders on the construction project were Andrew and Dawson, Montgomery,

$17,990 and Henderson, Black and Greene, Troy, $19,287.

General Dynamics Telecommunications, Rochester, N.Y., was awarded a $42,494.48

contract for new Stromberg - Carlson switchboard equipment for the Ramer and La Pine

exchanges which will double the capacity of the original equipment installed when the system

went into operation in October, 1954. In the eight years since the system was built, the number

of subscribers has climbed from 173 to more than 600.

Other bidders on the switchboard equipment were: Kellogg, Chicago, $50,510;

Automatic Electric Sales Corporation, Atlanta, $53,485; North Electric Co., Gallion, Ohio,

$62,69.

Architects for the projects were Paul W. Hofferbert, Hugh W. Ellis and W. Charles

Strickland, Gadsden. The consulting engineers are the J. F. Bevis Co., Gadsden.

All the work is expected to be completed in October.

LOWERY EMPLOYED AS NEW MANAGER OF LOCAL CO-OP

Conway Lowery has been employed by the Montgomery Farmers Cooperative as

manager and Mrs. Verna Phillips as secretary, President John A. Garrett announced.

The cooperative, organized early this year, is currently building a warehouse and office

on Teague road at Snowdoun.

Conway, a native of Houston, Miss., has been in cooperative work for five years, having

come from R. E. Lambert Feed and Seed Co. at Darlington to the Farmers Marketing and

Exchange Association in Montgomery. More recently he was with the Alabama Farmers

Cooperative.

Mrs. Phillips is also a former secretary of the Farmers Marketing and Exchange

Association.

Conway, who grew up on a farm, is married and has four children. A son, Conway Jr. is

in the Marine Corps. One daughter, Sandra, is a Lanier High School pupil, another, Marsha,

attends Bellingrath Junior High School, and a third daughter attends Davis Elementary School.

The family lives at 115 W. Delano St., and attends Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

RABIES CLINICS: Dr. J. Guy Phelps Jr., county rabies inspector, announces the
