Vacenti Vibes Issue 2

FROM HEAD OFFICE

During July, the Relatives Satisfaction Survey was conducted through Survey Monkey or paper based questionnaires to gather feedback regarding the care and services provided to residents at our homes. Thank you to all survey respondents for your invaluable feedback to assist us on our aspirational quality and customer service journey. We welcome the opportunity to continuously improve the care and services we provide to your loved ones. A total of 170 survey responses have been received as of the 3rd August and we would welcome your continuing feedback at any time.

Following evaluation of the January Relatives Survey, we improved the survey questionnaire to increase efficiencies in analysing your responses by including an additional rating response, “most times – we meet your needs most of the time, but there are occasional lapses”.

We are currently evaluating the results and will provide further details when available. We are delighted to learn that the announcement of our new trading name of “Vacenti” and the introduction of the new site names; Esida, Esida Lodge and Lorocco have been successfully promoted.

Our initial analysis indicates 85% of respondents stated that we “Exceed” or “Meet” relatives’ expectations regarding the overall quality and services at our homes. Whilst 16% of respondents stated that we fall short of your expectations, providing us with the opportunity to improve in the areas of hospitality services, involvement in the planning of care for your loved one, staff engagement and increase staff skills and knowledge.

From your feedback, we are pleased to report that 85% of respondents indicated an “’always” or “most times” answer was achieved in the specific topics of the home environment, provision of care, lifestyle and wellbeing, staff professionalism, feedback management and accurate financial accounts.

Each Vacenti home will be provided with a summary of findings from the survey to be reviewed, actioned and evaluated in the coming months. These improvement programs will be initiated to address the findings and progress will be shared with you. In the meantime, please “Share your Experience” with us through our internal feedback process or speak with the staff. Watch this space!

Vacenti Vibes Issue 2

ESIDA & ESIDA LODGE

Hello all and welcome to August – the beautiful sunny days have been marvelous! There is a “Show Day” Raffle at the front desk of Esida, all proceeds are used to assist with activities or projects the residents are working on. Recent proceeds have gone towards the red pots down the driveway and are looking fantastic and have wonderfully brightened up a previously dull area. I know the Men’s Group has feelings of accomplishment as they assisted David, the gardener, in potting the plants which the group had grown from a cutting with wonderful assistance from our volunteers. This is a wonderful example of a community working together.

As usual at this time of year, the westerly winds are expected. If you purchase any warm clothing please ensure they are suitable for the washing machine as we are unable to hand wash resident clothing. Also, any new clothes need to go to the nurses station to be named and subsequently labelled on night duty. If they are put directly into the resident’s wardrobes, and worn without being labelled, it makes it difficult to return them to the rightful owner. In the past month we have more unmarked washing than I have ever seen. Please alert Terry at the front desk if you would like to view the unlabelled washing so it can be returned to its rightful owner.

Speed in the car park – please be extremely careful as it is a shared environment. The speed bumps have slowed people down considerably. However, as the weather warms up, I expect more residents and relatives will be venturing out for a stroll, so please be alert.

In other news for the site we wish Gessy, the physiotherapist, all the best with her move interstate this month. She has grown with Vacenti and looked after many of our residents firstly as a carer, then as a physiotherapist. All the best Gessy!

Currently I am sourcing appropriate furniture to display the resident’s latest craft items – they are very proud of what they have achieved and would like visitors to also share in their sense of achievement.

Take care until next month, Laura.

Hello again!

July has flown by with a plethora of activities. Features during July included French National Day on the 14th; fabulous red, white and blue decorations, quizzes and craft, and festive French cuisine were savoured on the day. The 28th held a special treat for our residents at Esida and Esida Lodge with a performance from Silver Memories, as part of the Queensland Musical Festival. A vocal trio of lovely ladies (dressed up to the nines) performed for us for about 50 minutes. This trio performed renditions of familiar songs from the 40’s and 50’s, and sang absolutely beautifully!

Rae entertained our residents on her guitar at Esida for their Happy Hour and David Cheales burned up a few calories with his jokes and entertainment at Esida Lodge during their happy hour as well! All regular programmed activities have been enjoyed, of course. Other entertainment included our old favourites: Les played on the Piano, Nathaniel on his flute, Dennis who woos the crowd without fail on the first Friday of every month.

St Lawrence’s students have been attending Esida and Esida Lodge during July adding a competitive edge to Bobs and Bocce, and spending some valuable one-to-one time with residents.

Craft activities undertaken this month included a ‘French’ peg doll, felt key rings and marbled rocks. Our craft group experimented with Kokedamas, and they worked out very pleasingly.

Our Men’s Group have been working on a miniature wood village consisting of a row of attached houses made from blocks of scrap wood. Everyone had a hand in the sawing, sanding and painting of these delightful little houses. This group is quite a hit with our men, new people are joining in, and patronage is now 12-14 each Tuesday morning.

Have a fabulous August everyone.

Ciao, Susie

LOROCCO

Hello Everyone,

I can’t believe that we have entered the second half of the year already. Lorocco continues to rock with many activities planned each month. August is going to be no different, but we do have a very special event with the Ekka coming to visit with Old McDonald’s Farm. Thanks to all who have supported Jilly’s fundraising efforts to enable us to have all the farm animals pay us a visit. A BIG Thank You to Jilly. I am also happy to advise that Jillian (Jilly) Campbell is now Lorocco’s fulltime Lifestyle Coordinator and will finally, after lots of years, be able to have weekends to herself.

We have employed a number of new Nursing Assistants over recent weeks who come with various levels of experience. So “Welcome” Irene, Khushbuben, Jordyn, Shiho, Jovie and Leanne. Unfortunately, Huy our RN has had some personal issues, and we were very sorry to say goodbye as he was settling in as a valued member of the nursing team.

I would also like to advise that due to personal reasons, I have resigned from my position as the Facility / Clinical Manager here at Lorocco. The staff - Administration, Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Lifestyle, Volunteers, Allied Health, Kitchen, Housekeeping & Maintenance here at Lorocco continuously strive to provide the residents with individualised care and, as a result, they make a difference to the residents on a daily basis. It has been an honour to lead this unique team who demonstrate a loyalty to this home.

Take Care,

Glenda Phillips

MAREBELLO

Hello and welcome to lovely August!

It is nice to see the warmer weather, with residents and families taking advantage of the sun, sitting in the café and scattered throughout the seats in the gardens. I suppose now that winter is more than half way finished, we will have to be careful with the lovely scones from the café. Kevin and the café ladies, Sue and Pauline, certainly spoil us with the scones and coffee each day.

We will have some exciting activities this month. August, being the Ekka month, will see the Marebello Show Day being held on Tuesday 15th. I invite you all to attend this great day.

We have welcomed some new staff to the team over the past few weeks, please make sure you welcome them as they join the Marebello family, and we are sad to see some familiar faces leaving us. Mary Cooper, our Clinical Coordinator, will be leaving at the start of August. Mary has worked tirelessly in the clinical team and made some wonderful friends. I would like to thank Mary for her dedication to the team at Marebello and I am sure you will all agree, she will be sorely missed by not only Ash and I, but all residents and staff alike.

With the warmer weather approaching, can we remind everyone to make sure new clothing is labelled prior to being sent to the laundry. Denis and his team do an outstanding job in getting clothes back to their owner, however it is made that little harder when it is not clearly labelled. It can be quite distressing when laundry goes missing, let’s make sure that this doesn’t happen to you.

Some of you may have noticed Bonnie and Clyde have been missing lately. Unfortunately Bonnie did not like being locked in at night and took off exploring for 2 weeks. I am pleased to say she was found safe and sound and has quickly settled at home with me. They may come back for a visit one day. However I can report both cats are thoroughly spoilt and ruling the house, much to my dog’s disgust. I will keep you up to date with their antics but suffice to say Clyde is still the boss!

I have noticed that I am not getting as many feedback forms from residents or families lately. Please keep the “Share your experience” forms coming. I say this many times, we love feedback - good, bad and ugly ! If we don’t know you are not happy, we cannot fix things for you. If you don’t want to fill out these forms, please just pop in to see me or call me, my door is always open to you all.

Until next month – take care and keep in touch

MAREBELLO

LifestyleLast month we said goodbye to Kate Middleton, who has decided to move on for personal reasons. Fiona has stepped into the role of Lifestlye Coordinator, and we have welcomed Lynne to the Lifestyle Team during the week. Sue (whom many of you will know from the Coffee Shop) has taken over on the weekends.

We are all very excited about our new roles and will be introducing different ideas and activities to the calendar over the coming months which we hope everyone will enjoy. If we have forgotten any of your favourites, please let us know, so that we can include them in future. Additionally, if there are any activities that you would like us to include in our program, please tell us.

During NAIDOC Week, we explored Indigenous Australian culture through Dreamtime Stories and created our very own Dot Art paintings.

To celebrate Bastille Day we had a number of French inspired activities, including Armchair Travel to France where we climbed the Eiffel Tower, explored a Chateau, visited the Louvre, and of course sampled croissants and brie!

At Happy Hour this month one of our residents, Harry Chivers, announced how the group had started 7 years ago with only a few people who gathered together one afternoon each week for a quiet drink and a chat. Now we regularly have over 20 people attend, and it is always a very lively affair.

A group of residents and volunteers attended the local Sharks Sporting Club for bingo and a delicious lunch during July. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves (despite none of us winning!) and we hope to visit Sharks again in the not to distant future.

We have also been making the most of the fabulous weather, enjoying activities outside so that we can soak up the sun. Hopefully this weather will continue into August!

Next month promises to be busy, with an Ekka Fun Day and some extra special activities for Seniors Week!

Until next month,

Fiona, Lynne, Eileen and Sue.

CASA DÁMORE

In July we started off with a wonderful concert to see the Queensland Youth Orchestra and continued throughout the month with a series of Jazz concerts at the Brisbane City Hall. A small group visited our local shops (Woolworths Coorparoo) for a grocery run and morning tea, everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

We were fortunate to have two sing-a-longs, first with our very own Frances back on the piano and then with Fiona, bringing in all her instruments with the crowd to join in. We welcomed back Nathaniel to share his magic on his flute and ended the month with a bang with our monthly happy hour with David Cheales.

In August, we will visit for the first time “The Lovewell Project” AKA the Mount Gravatt Lookout Café for morning tea and to take in the sights. Book and pay early, I am sure this will be a highlight this month.

Our annual Side Show Alley returns bringing with it a chance for everyone to win prizes and all of the naughty stuff.

I also will be continuing my slide shows through Ireland and Scotland, sharing stories of my adventures and mishaps along the way (everyone is welcome to come and listen).

For additional details for the latest lifestyle program, please see the notice boards or grab a copy of the latest lifestyle program. It can also be downloaded from the new Vacenti website - www.vacenti.com.au.

Kind regards,

LifestyleHello everyone and welcome to our update from Casa Dámore Apartments.

Where is the year going, we’ve past the middle of the year and heading towards the beautiful spring season. Whilst we are still in the thick of winter, please remember if you have any cold or flu symptoms we ask that you please delay your visit to Casa ‘til your symptoms clear.

It’s been great seeing many of our residents heading out on our weekly bus trips. The concert trips to City Hall are always a favourite and I always enjoy our residents recounting their experience and the music they have enjoyed. If you have any suggestions for outings you think our residents would enjoy, please let us know.

At our July Resident’s Forum we discussed some new projects we are embarking on this month. This includes a regular Farmers’ Market store in one of our outdoor atriums, where we hope to have a range of fresh fruit and flowers from a local supplier available for purchase. This will give our residents the opportunity to enjoy a unique shopping experience right here at Casa Dámore.

As we head into Spring, we would also like to form a Garden Club with our green thumbed residents to bring some colour and joy to our outdoor spaces. If you would like to be involved, we would love to hear from you. It will be a great opportunity to go outside and get our hands dirty in the great outdoors!

There is always lots of opportunities for volunteers to be involved in the day to day life at Casa Dámore. If you have a special interest you would like to share with us, please get in touch or see our website for information.

A reminder to all visitors, please call in to Level One Reception area to sign in and out when you are visiting Casa Dámore. This is especially important should an emergency situation unfold that requires evacuation of our home.

At Casa Dámore we like to hear your feedback. One of the great ways you can do this is by filling in one of our ‘Share Your Experience’ forms. These can be found throughout the facility. Simply fill it in and post it in the Communication Box located centrally in each dining area for collection. Or simply come and say hello!

Catch you next month,

CON NOI

Hello Everyone,

The end of the financial year has come and gone, and the Annual General Meeting to approve the budget has been held and accepted. It was a great result for the year.

On Friday 14th July, we said farewell to Heather, who had been part of our front office team assisting in activities, cleaning, gardening, to name a few. Her outstanding skills as barista and cake making really helped make the day for our residents who enjoyed a nice hot cuppa. The residents presented Heather with a lovely vase and many other gifts and cards all signed by the residents. It was a lovely morning tea and we are sorry to see her go. The plaque read, “Some people look for a beautiful place, others make a place beautiful”.

Happy Retirement Heather!

“Queenslander” came echoing from the Piano Bar of Con Noi for the last State of Origin game. It was a fantastic final to a great series. Just somewhat disappointing for the Blues. The Maroons seem to be always on their feet cheering on their team. Every picture tells a story. One moment waiting for a try and the next moment celebrating.

Every day of the week there is always something to do at Con Noi. On the right, you will see Judith and Beverley playing Crib with Noel and Brian. Mahjong is played on a Tuesday afternoon where we have 8 players who enjoy a quiet afternoon all deep in thought.

Currently Catherine is relieving at Con Noi as Allen is having shoulder surgery. This will be approximately 6 weeks in a sling continuing with a slow recovery.

We have one 3 bedroom apartment for sale and two 2 bed apartments remaining. For further information, you can give Allen a call on (07)3843 4735 or mobile on 0418  588  468 to make an appointment or check out our web page www.connoi.com.au. By the way check out the video.

Until next time.

Cheers from Allen.

Farewell Heather

Happy Retirement!

August 1, 1944 - Anne Frank penned her last entry into her diary. “[I] keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if...there weren’t any other people living in the world.” Three days later, Anne and her family were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on March 15, 1945, at age 15.

What happend this month in history

August 2, 1939 - Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt concerning the possibility of atomic weapons. “A single bomb of this type carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory.” Six years later, on August 6, 1945, the first Atomic Bomb, developed by the U.S., was dropped on the Japanese port of Hiroshima.

August 5, 1962 - Film star Marilyn Monroe died at age 36 from an overdose of sleeping pills. She made 29 films during her career and came to symbolize Hollywood glamour.

Birthday - Penicillin discoverer Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) was born in Lochfield, Scotland. By accident, he found that mold from soil killed deadly bacteria without injuring human tissue. He received the Nobel Prize in 1954.

August 16, 1977 - Elvis Presley was pronounced dead at the Memphis Baptist Hospital at 3:30 p.m., at age 42.

August 17, 1978 - The first transatlantic balloon trip was completed by three Americans; Max Anderson, Ben Abruzzo, and Larry Newman, all from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Starting from Maine on August 11th, they traveled in Double Eagle II over 3,000 miles in 137 hours, landing about 60 miles west of Paris.

Vacenti Vibes Issue 2

What’s new!Vacenti encourages staff excellence and continuous improvement by providing staff with many learning and development opportunities. Over the past few months, many of you (employees, residents and families) have provided feedback through a variety of surveys. This has highlighted that many of you were seeking greater opportunities to participate in training and development, or felt that there was an increased need for training and development.

We are about to embark on an exciting new initiative in the Training and Development space. Get ready for Vacenti MAX – MAXimise your learning.

Vacenti recognises the essential contribution employees make to the delivery of quality care and services to our residents. We are thrilled to advise you that Vacenti have invested in an electronic Learning Management platform to ensure that flexible professional development opportunities are available to all staff to enhance their skills and career progression.

A Learning Management system offers flexibility to staff to engage in training at anytime and place that is convenient to them. It is designed to be accessible from any device including a smartphone, tablet or computer.

I look forward to working with our team as we embrace this exciting new initiative. The quotation to the right resonates with me as “willingness to learn is a choice”. I am confident that this will enhance our current Education and Staff Development.

A number of employees participated in a Grief and Loss workshop in July. This workshop was comprehensive and interactive recognising the importance of professional care givers and their interactions around grief and loss, helping others, self-care and peer support. I would like to extend a huge thank you to White Lady Funerals for facilitating this training.

NEWS IN TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Congratulations are in order also to those employees who recently completed the Dementia Essentials training. This nationally accredited course is designed to assist workers supporting people living with dementia. It explores strategies to assist with good communication, planning and developing appropriate activities, and understanding behaviours in people living with dementia. We have secured further training dates for October and also into 2018. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to Alzheimer’s Australia for this wonderful opportunity as part of Dementia Training Australia.

Many of our senior clinicians also participated in a Clinical Facilitation Workshop this month. Vacenti values the importance of offering quality student clinical placements for undergraduate nursing students. Thank you to Griffith University and TAFE Queensland for preparing our clinicians to facilitate student placements. We are excited to be moving forward with our Clinical Placement Program for 2018.

Until next time,

Melissa Blakemore RN MACNTraining Facilitator

JOKES!Two fish are sitting in a tank. One looks over at the other and says: “Hey, do you know how to drive this thing?”

“This is your captain speaking, AND THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SHOUTING.”

I told my doctor that I broke my arm in two places. He told me to stop going to those places.

What’s orange and sounds like a parrot? A carrot.

What’s E.T. short for? Because he’s only got little legs.

SHORT STORYA man picks up answers a phone in the shopping center.

“Hello darling. I recently saw a necklace in a catalog and I want it, so do you mind if I use your credit card?”

“How expensive is it?” the man says.

“Just $1200”.

“That cheap? I’ll get four of them for you so you’ll wear a different one each season”

“You’re so generous honey. Oh I also want a ring”.

“How expensive?”

“Just $5000”.

“Get two, one for each hand”.

“Thank you! Oh I also want a new car, it’s $40000”.

“Sure, why not.”

“I love you dear! Oh I gotta go, bye!”

After that the man quizzically looks around the mall and loudly asks “Did anyone drop a phone?”
