Hall. Thank Heaven, two of these families now have stable housing, one in a rental house off Price Street and
one in a rental house in the Cloverdale neighborhood. Please pray for a green card for a young mother, Maria,
from Uganda, who hopes to find work to support her four-year-old son. Our next time to host will be the
week after Thanksgiving at Wesley Gardens. Please speak with Nelle or with Missions Chairman, Scott
Cleaveland, to help with this ministry to circumstantially homeless families. Thank you to all 42 Wesley
volunteers, including 11 new overnight volunteers, who assisted with staying overnight, cooking meals,
washing linens, setting up cots, and leading Bible reading and prayer. Special thanks to Mrs. Shelia Jackson
for leading the devotional time from 1, 2, and 3 John with prayer and Bible reading all seven nights.

A couple of weeks ago, I almost forgot an important anniversary. No,
not my wedding anniversary; that’s in December. A new friend asked
me how long I had been serving at Wesley Monumental. I immediately
looked at the calendar and it was August 17, the anniversary of my first
day at Wesley Monumental UMC. That day marked 4 years since I first
arrived at Wesley. It has been a wonderful four years here. I have enjoyed every opportunity I have had to invest in the lives of
young people here at Wesley. I have taken great joy in seeing students grow in their faith in Jesus Christ and
their love for God and his people. At every step of the way, Wesley Monumental has been a welcoming and
inviting place for me and my family. Thank you! Youth Group Fall Schedule It’s September, which means Sunday night youth group returns to Wesley Monumental, from 5:00 p.m.-7:00
p.m. We start with dinner at 5:00 p.m., then enjoy games and Bible study afterwards. Youth Choir will regu-
larly practice from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Join us for a special fall kick-off on September 9. We will also resume Wednesday night programs on September 5. Join us each week for youth Bible studies for
all ages (6th-12th grades) of girls and guys.

UMM September Meeting The United Methodist Men's meeting for September will be held on Thursday, September 20, at 6:00 p.m.
(SHARP) in the Fellowship Hall. Guest speaker will be William D. Cannady, Sr., CPA, who will talk about
today’s taxes. Come and enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Suzanna King; cost is $6. AS ALWAYS, SPOUSES
AND FRIENDS AND ALL CHURCH MEMBERS are welcome to enjoy a great evening.
Sunday School In preparing for the beginning of a new Sunday School year, we have been looking
at several different books and programs. Sonja Stewart’s book, Following Jesus,
is one of our favorites. In her work teaching seminary students about children’s
spirituality, Dr. Stewart began to examine if Sunday School and regular school
classrooms should be the same. She asks, if we make Sunday School just like reg-
ular school, why are we surprised when the children don’t want to come. Do you
know children who love to go to “school”? And if we want the children to love to
come on Sunday, maybe we should call it something besides school? We are ex-
cited and enthusiastic to begin using Dr. Stewart’s books along with our Godly
Play books and materials. We will be using a multi-sensory storytelling approach
that engages the children and allows them to see, feel, hear and retell Bible stories. As we begin a new year
of children’s programs, please plan for your children to join us! We promise to make it fun and interesting
and not like regular school. Sunday School Drop Off Beginning on Promotion Sunday, we will have the Children’s Library in the Fellowship Hall open and staffed
with adults who will walk the children upstairs to their classrooms. This will allow parents with children on
different floors of the Education Building to drop off their children in one location and then go to their Sunday
School class in Oliver Hall. Parents will need to pick up their children from their Sunday School classrooms at
10:45 a.m. Welcome Haley Herrington Please welcome Haley Herrington who has joined our staff as our Children’s Ministry
Assistant. Haley will be assisting with many of the programs offered for our nursery,
early childhood, and elementary children. A member of Wesley Monumental, Haley
attends the Young Mothers’ Bible Study. Haley and her husband, Will, have a three-
year-old son, Lynwood, who attends Eli’s Place.
Joyful Noise Choir We are looking forward to welcoming all of our youngest singers back to Joyful Noise on Wednesday, Septem-
ber 5. Many of our wonderful teachers are returning, and we will continue to have a three-station rotation
for the children during choir. The children will enjoy time singing, playing instruments, and learning about
“The Note Family.” We’ll have a child-friendly dinner in all three nursery rooms beginning at 5:15 p.m. and
we will take the children to choir at 6:00 p.m. If you are only coming to choir, please bring your child to
room 201 at 6:00 p.m. and we will take them to their group.
It’s never too early to learn about STEM—Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics!

SEPTEMBER AND THE END OF SUMMER
Outside it may still feel like summer, but the arrival of September for all practical purposes means summer is
over. School’s back in session, the pools are closing, football is starting, and at Wesley it means we are
getting back to our normal schedule. As fun as summer is, a lot of us are ready for the routine to come back.
At Wesley a big part of that routine is our Wednesday evening dinner, Bible study, and Children’s Choir
program. The weekly habit of coming to church for fellowship and study in the middle of our week bridges
the gap between Sundays and keeps us grounded in the middle of the hectic pace of our lives. One of the
things that characterized the early church and contributed to the growth spiritually and numerically was how
often they “gathered together” for fellowship, study, and worship. They recognized discipleship was a group
effort and a daily activity. If you’ve never been a part of the Wednesday night program, we encourage you to
give it a try. The food is great, the fellowship sweet, the Word relevant, the children’s ministry exciting and
meaningful. There is something for all ages to help strengthen our faith. This year we hope to offer several things to choose from for the study portion of our Wednesday night
program. While we will continue to have a Bible study and other various programs in the Fellowship Hall,
in addition we will be teaching a “CHRISTIANITY 101” CLASS for those who might be new to faith, the
church, or maybe just want a refresher on the basics of Christianity and the Biblical story. It will last for ten
weeks. Finally, we want to offer another Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University Class and/or the follow
up course entitled, “Legacy.” If you are interested in either of the Dave Ramsey Courses or Christianity
101, please email [email protected] or call the church office, 912-232-0191, to sign up. We
will need to have an accurate count for the Dave Ramsey course for materials to be ordered. Don’t forget
there will also be a RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE ON SEPTEMBER 12 from 3:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., you can sign up
online or call the office, and we will help you find a time. Our children’s choirs and youth small groups will
continue, and a nursery is available for our youngest children. Monica and Charli can help you get your
children signed up for the program. One other “fall” event I want to put on your calendar is the final celebration of our 150th Anniversary year.
On Sunday afternoon, November 11, we will have a light lunch after the 11:00 service followed by a trolley
tour around town to all the historic sights connected to John and Charles Wesley. A sign up will be out soon
so we can make sure we have enough trolleys for all who want to attend.
Martin Luther referred to music as “a fair and glorious gift of God.” We look forward to sharing this gift with
your children this coming school year.
Children’s Choir
Choirs for children ages three years old through 5th grade begins Wednesday, September 5. Dinner is served
from 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., and choir is from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Details will follow in the mail. All wel-
come.
Youth Choir
Choir for students in grades 6th through 12th grades begins again Sunday, September 9 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00
p.m. in the choir room. All welcome.
We Help Children To:
Love coming to church, love God, and love music
We Try To:
Teach children what it means to worship God with music, Bible stories and scripture through music that will
spiritually develop them, life skills that will help them develop personally and sociably, and these skills:
1) Play chimes and other instruments. 2) Read rhythms, notes, and understand harmony. 3) Use and under-
stand the hymnal. 4) Read and sing hymns. 5) Learn to sing using good tone, breath control, expressiveness,
and blend.
We also strive to allow children from a very young age to experience the glory and majesty of God. Music is a
language that expresses profound concepts and ideas beyond the bounds of the written word.
Christmas Planning Christmas at Wesley will include a large decorated Christmas tree in the parlor of Oliver
Hall. We are seeking donations of ornaments with a Christian theme. We are looking for
angels, doves, crosses, nativity scenes, candles, or stars. If you have any of these you would
like to donate, please let Carolyn Hale Cubbedge know. They are needed by November 4.

Merry Makers Merry Makers, our senior adult fellowship group, returns to its normal
schedule on Monday, September 10, 11:00 a.m., at Wesley
Gardens Retreat Center. The program will feature Ash Grimmett who
will share about his adventures along the Appalachian Trail. Lunch will
follow the program. Cost is $7.00. Please make a reservation through
your Sunday School class or by calling the church office. The 2018-
2019 program is available at the front of the sanctuary.

Carolyn Roth and Raymond Patricio honored
for their service to the choir.
On July 31, the Bible Buddies presented
the play "Jesus Fulfills Old Testament
Prophecies." Narrated by Thomas
Bordeaux, the 16 children portrayed
their favorite Bible characters.
During the past year, several Wesley members have met one Saturday out of
each month to help feed the homeless.
