Attracting Mosquitoes & Biting Midge

• For a mosquito trap to be effective, it must have some or all of the following Scientifically Proven Attractants (kairomones):

• Carbon dioxide – (CO2)– Female mosquitoes host-seek using the carbon dioxide we breathe out

• Lactic acid – Produced as a result of vertebrate muscle metabolism in humans and animals and emitted through the skin.

• Heat- Mosquitoes are drawn to our body heat.• Octenol – Common in bovines• Moisture – Mosquitoes look for moisture in our

perspiration.

• Spectrum light – Different species of mosquitoes are drawn to different wavelengths of light

• Ultraviolet light (UV) – A certain wavelength of UV attracts some species

• Sound – High frequency ‘feeding frenzy’ sound attracts other host-seeking female mosquitoes

• Movement – Mosquitoes are attracted to movement provided by light

• Colour – Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours

• Contrasting Colours – Aids in landing

Efficacy of the Mosquito Slayer Technology

• “…’the state of the art’ and has the best catching performance for a range of mosquitoes and biting insects’” Source: Dr Peter Hick, PhD. MSc. MDA (Agric)

• Miniature light traps baited with carbon dioxide (such as the EVS) have been reported as capturing up to 260,000 mosquitoes per night (C Johansen, Queensland Health, pers. comm.) and are renowned for their efficacy. It is therefore of interest that the Mosquito Slayer Master and Satellite trap performed better than the EVS trap in a comparison test.Source: Craig R Williams, Harry L S Roberts & Michael J KokkinnMosquito Research Laboratory School of Pharmaceutical, Molecular& Biomedical Sciences University of South Australia North Terrace, Adelaide 5001 February 2001

Problems Associated With Mosquitoes & Biting Midge

• Outdoor smoking areas put smokers at risk• Disease potential in Australia is growing rapidly• Regular Dengue fever alerts are occurring in Nth

Queensland and Northern Territory• Outdoor sports (golf, bowling, etc) can be unpleasant in

many areas due to biting insects• Workplaces can be rendered unsafe• Homeowners that have beautiful backyards that cannot

be used, particularly at dusk• Alfresco dining areas can gain a poor reputation due to

constant biting effecting the dining atmosphere• Real estate values have reduced in some areas

Mosquito SlayerPROPlacement Guidelines

• Position the trap away from where you entertain and relax in order to draw the mosquitoes away from you.

• Place the trap near where the mosquitoes are breeding (wetlands, creeks, standing water etc.).

• Locate the trap near where mosquitoes rest (trees, shrubs, tall grass) keeping in mind the aim is to draw the mosquitoes away from people.

Page 16: the Mosquito SlayerPRO - · PDF file• Octenol – Common in bovines ... • Sound – High frequency ‘feeding frenzy’ sound attracts other host-seeking female mosquitoes

• When using carbon dioxide gas (primary attractant for larger catches) please note that the gas is heavier than air and, therefore, the gas will fall and drift downhill. Try to locate the trap on high ground, if placing it on an undulating site.

• The direction of prevailing winds should also be considered when choosing a site as mosquitoes sense their prey from downwind.

• Face the trap towards the mosquito breeding and resting areas.

• It is best to place the gas cylinder in the shade and where it will not be knocked or tripped over and secure it safely so it won't topple.

• Gas regulator hose is 1.5m in length• The position of an external power point

(sometimes located in the meter box) will influence where you place the trap. The electrical cord from the power point to the transformer is 2m. The standard electrical cord from the transformer to the unit is 10m.

• The trap can be mounted to a wall, fence or other suitable structure. A specially designed stand and trolley will be available. Star picket an option.

• Keep the trap out of reach of children.

• Do not place the trap in range of automatic sprinklers.

Installation & Operation

• Easy to use 240v / 12v system. 12 volt power provides for safe and easy installation. No licensed electrician.

• Solar/Battery option• Water resistant for outdoor use• Survey the site for best placement using placement

guidelines• Understand area of coverage of each unit• Establish the number of units required• Determine stand, wall, trolley or fence mounting• A protective cage may be needed in public and

hospitality areas

Maintenance

• After installation, mosquito traps will require maintenance to ensure maximum catch performance– Remove catch (mosquitoes and midge) for

analysis or disposal (dry catch)– Refilling water tray or emptying catch bag– Adding liquid attractants (Bantol)– Check gas is operational and replace gas

cylinder if needed– Clean the unit
