STYLIST SONALI THAKUR
deconstructs the aesthetics of four infl uential interior design and architecture practices—and the men who helm them
Through his eponymous fi rm in Antwerp, Belgium, Vincent Van Duysen is known for his pared-down aesthetic—where functionality, durability, and comfort are prime components. He describes his style as using pure and tactile materials to create a clear and timeless design. “My architectural language is not shy of aesthetics, but resists fashion and trends.” For his own residence in Antwerp (pictured), Van Duysen adds, “I worked with a very specifi c, very Belgian palette that combined roughly woven textures and neutral smooth surfaces such as plaster, wide poplar fl oorboards, and Belgian bluestone.”

Based in Milan, founders Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran believe in experimentation with colours, rich materials, classical time periods and styles to create various layers for the eye to discover. “We love the elegance and sophistication of Eileen Gray’s work. The ‘Transat’ chair and ‘Jumo’ lamp are two of our favourite pieces.” About this Milan apartment (pictured), they add, “The elements to furnish the space are from different time periods and span various decorative movements.”

Architecture at Large—a practice with offi ces in London and New York—was founded by Rafael de Cárdenas, and is known for melding bold geometry with elegant and unexpected art and design, an aesthetic he prefers, as is evident in his fascination for the Memphis design movement. “It represents a very exciting, but beguiling moment in design history. It’s sort of weird for the sake of being weird.” About this project (pictured), he says, “I got into this whole beige-on-beige fantasy after happening upon a pair of 1958 sand-coloured armchairs by Joseph-André Motte.”
We are a contemporary studio,
and our quest is for contemporaneity.
Sometimes that can be a little uncomfortable,
if it’s forward enough—which hopefully we are.

This studio—with branches in Paris, Marrakech and London—is headed by architects Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty. Apart from their love for all things artisanal, they identify with “the Brazilian architecture movement that the brutalist Paulista [School] embodied in [architect] Paulo Mendes da Rocha. We also like the Bauhaus movement, of course, but it’s not very original. More recently, we were impressed by the Eindhoven design school in the Netherlands and by the unique approach of Studio Mumbai.” Speaking about a home that they built for a client in Morocco (pictured), “It’s a strong fortress on top of a hill, from where it dominates the valley. We were inspired by old castles and by medieval forts.”
