Eucharistic Adoration

Stewardship Corner ~

This weekend we celebrate Corpus Christi, or the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Corpus Christi was instituted to celebrate the Eucharist in a joyous and thankful way. The word “Eucharist” itself means gratitude or thanksgiving. When we attend Mass each week, we share in the communion of Christ and we gather to give thanks for the great gift of Jesus. As stewards, we are called to thanksgiving in this way. Each time we approach the altar during the Eucharistic Celebration we live out this call.

Christ comes to us in a reality through this blessed sacrament. The priest, through the power of the Holy Spirit, transubstantiates the bread and wine to the Body and Blood of Jesus. He feeds us in order that we might one day live eternally with Him. The Eucharist helps us to resist the temptations and to work through the struggles that our world poses to us. Participation in the Eucharist is therefore more than just going through the motions.

St. John Paul II put it this way in a sermon he gave on Corpus Christi: “In order to live we need food and drink. In order to gain eternal life we need the Eucharist. This is the food and drink that transforms our lives and opens before us the way to eternal life. By consuming the Body and Blood of Christ, we bear within ourselves already on this earth, the seed of eternal life, for the Eucharist is the sacrament of life in God.” Jesus gives Himself to us repeatedly and we must act accordingly: with gratitude, reverence, humility, respect, and a commitment to love.

Peace,

Kaitlyn Wiant
