OUR LADY OF FATIMA & THE FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS: On May 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared at Fatima to three simple shepherd children, and appeared to them for five more consecutive months, ending in October with the miracle of the sun to confirm that the apparitions were real. Our Lady revealed a three part secret to them. The first secret was that the children were shown a vision of hell, and Our Lady told them in order to save poor sinners, God wanted to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart in the world. If souls did what Our Lady requested, many souls would be saved, and there would be a period of peace.

In the second secret Our Lady revealed future events. She told them that World War I was going to end, but if souls did not stop offending God, another, even worse war would begin in the reign of Pius XI (World War II). The world was going to suffer for sins by experiencing war, hunger, and persecutions of the Church and the Holy Father.

She asked for the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. She said if her requests were heeded, Russia would be converted, and there would be a period of peace; if not, Russia would spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and the persecution of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, "My Immaculate Heart will triumph."

New Eucharistic Stations … The stations in the back of the church will be eliminated. There will be 3 stations for the Sacred Hosts and 2 for the Precious Blood at the front of the church. This is very similar to what we had a few years ago. One minister will go to the back of the church near the end of the distribution of Communion, for those who can't walk forward or don't sit in the front pews. Please let the Greeters know if you would like to receive Communion at your pew. They will direct the Extraordinary Ministers to you so that you may receive.

RECOMMITMENT CEREMONY The members of the Sodality will recommit to the Blessed Virgin Mary at the 9:30 Mass on June 12th.

Next Sodality meeting will be on Sunday June 12th after the Recommitment Ceremony.

Mass Schedule Change After Labor Day the 11;00am Saint Lucy Mass on Sunday will change to 11:30am. This change is necessary due to the new religious formation program for youth that will begin this fall. this will allow more time for catechesis in the morning and will allow us to offer two sessions instead of one. It will also allow more flexibility for the priests in the event the one saying the 9:30 at St Monica is needed for the third morning mass at St. Lucy. I know change is always challenging. I am thankful for the Pastoral Council's flexibility in this matter and hope that we can all be flexible as we make every effort to get young families to join us at mass.

New Initiative St. Monica Pre-K Program

For many years the Sisters of Presentation of Mary have provided a wonderful pre-school program for the children in Methuen and surrounding areas. As of this year, they can no longer do that, so the Presentation of Mary pre-school program will be ending. St. Monica School is happy to announce that they

will be opening a pre-k for 2016/2017 school year. We are excited to provide a Catholic based pre-k program for the residents of Methuen and surrounding areas. We would like to thank the Sisters of PMA for their service to early childhood education all these years. If you are interested in enrolling your child in the new pre-school program at St. Monica School, please contact Sharon Tully in the School Office at 978-686-1801.

The children researched important people, wrote creative book reports and presented their information to the class. Here is the cast of characters represented by these amazing students: Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Mother Theresa, Jane Goodall, Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Mia Hamm, Ann Frank, Helen Keller, Madam CJ Walker, Pocahontas, Walt Disney, Marco Polo, Paul Revere, Daniel Boone, Ben Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, King Tut, Martin Luther King, Jr, Roberto Clemente, Michael Faraday, Dr.

Seuss, Beethoven, and Sebastian Bach. Well done, grade 2!

FROM FR. Bill

Celebrating Our youth and giving them, and their families, every encouragement We are filled with joy that over the past several weeks, 123 children received First Holy Communion from our parishes, 62 from the Saint Monica Sunday Program, 35 from St Lucy Sunday Program, and 26 from Saint Monica School. In addition 34 young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Monica Parish. It was beautiful to have so many young families with us for Sunday Mass and our most fervent prayers are that they, and the members of their families that are living in our parishes, will be here often. I am, and I hope we all will be, firmly committed to the celebration of First Eucharist within the context of Sunday Mass. We have taken, and are continuing to take, strong steps to stress that our formation programs are not something distinct from the worship of God on Sunday. We call Holy Eucharist “Communion” not only because of the unity in our dogmatic beliefs but also as our sign of being a people that are united with each other in the Lord’s love. The Church (which means “assembly”) is the gathering of God’s children and the Parish is where the local church gathers on Sunday. We are all aware that many of the people who were with us for First Communion don’t come often and are missing out on the greatest gift God has given, himself in the Eucharist. It saddens us that many of our brothers and sisters lack the fluency regarding how to behave in Church that they would possess if they were here each week. We see everything from a lack of knowing when to sit or stand to people answering phones, or eating, in the middle of Mass. Of course this can frustrate us but we must never let it take our eye off the ball in appreciating that God is at work in them because they are his children. He will never abandon them just as he never will abandon us. God is speaking to them and we must help them to hear Him. My hope is that they saw Him in the beauty and excitement of the little ones who received the Holy Eucharist and that they heard something in the homily to move them to draw closer to God. But another way God speaks to them is through the kind welcome offered by all of us. Perhaps we offer assistance by sliding over in the pew or helping them to use the missalette and hymnal, or how to pass the collection basket. Perhaps the best ways to welcome are these: “Your child is so beautiful (handsome)!” “You must be so proud.” “We are so glad you are here” “It is so nice to see our church filled, please join us again” (of course this last one must be without any trace of sarcasm.) As we remember the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), each of us that are here each week and faithfully support our parish financially, must be very careful not to fall into the trap of becoming the “older brother” who remained outside of the feast with resentment because he felt the mercy showered on his wayward brother was unjust. His sense of superiority made him angry. The father begged him to come in. We are called to be merciful like the Father, and our mercy can begin by pouring it out on a stranger that is in “our” pew or who in their ignorance is distracting us from our prayer. The parable doesn’t tell us if the older son enters the party. I pray our hearts will not stay outside, even if our bodies remain inside. If we have merciful hearts at the party it will become more crowded and our lives and the lives of others will be transformed. Happy Feast of Corpus Christi, Father Bill
