We are proud of your hard work and effort and so we want to honor you with prayer and offer a special Mass this weekend for you. As you plan for your future, whether it be further education or employment, I hope you cling to your faith in Jesus which has shaped your character and guided your decisions. No matter where you go remember you have a family of faith back home who loves you. Welcome Steve Ray This weekend we have Steve Ray return for another faith inspiring talk. Steve is a nationally known Catholic speaker and was with us last year for our parish mission on the feast of Cor- pus Christi. This weekend he will be encouraging us how to carry our crosses in our current culture. We will begin with breakfast at 11:00 and presentation at Noon at Holy Family’s Life Center. After the talks there will be guided meditations on the stations of the cross along the new prayer trail. Walking with Jesus and Staying Faith-filled Next weekend is the Memorial Day Holiday and we will be hosting our annual Walk With Jesus on the Feast of Corpus Christi. I am sure you are making vacation and recreational plans and as a parish we are too. We are building our vacation around bringing Jesus into our neighbor- hoods, through our streets and past our homes as we bear the Eucharist on our six mile walk from St. Augustine to Holy Family. As Catholics this is what we do, we make Jesus present in our midst. I know that summer feels like a time to ease your schedules and enjoy a slower pace as the sun and refreshing waters of Michigan call out, “come and play.” But as you plan your summer fun I ask that you remember to include your faith in whatever you will do. Take it with you to the beach so that your actions and behavior reflect who you are, remember to pray grace before you begin your barbecue, picnic or graduation party. When away on vacation many families forget to plan ahead to find a church near them for Sunday Mass, and inevitably Sunday passes without a prayer. Remember, Jesus likes to play too. He enjoyed the same things we do when we recreate during the summer. In the gospels we read about how he loved to fish, to play water sports (we call it water skiing, he called it water-walking), and don’t forget the outdoor meals – fish sandwiches for five thousand people. The man knew how to picnic! Being faithful to your vocation while on vacation is as simple as inviting Jesus to go with you, wherever that may be. Please remember too that your parish stays open over the summer and that parish life contin- ues 24/7. Your parish needs the support you give, so make sure you go to the parish picnic, attend your parish festival, volunteer for the summer programs and activities, and stay in- volved. God bless your week, Fr. Joe

FR JOE’s

Farewell open house

Everyone is invited to come celebrate with us on June 5th to thank Fr. Joe Horn for all that he has done for our parishes and wish him well in his new endeavor. Everyone will be gathering in the gym of the Holy Family Life Center starting at 1 p.m. For more information, please contact Barb Armstrong at [email protected] or

Dear Fr. Joe and Parishioners,

Thank you for your generous support of the Benefit Dinner for our daughter,

Cecilia. We are also grateful for the use

of the Family Life Center, the hard work

planning and working the event and all

who attended. It was a beautiful evening

and blessing to our family in so many ways; we are humbled by the love and generosity that was shown to us. Enough money was

raised to cover the cost of two years of treatment for Cecilia! Thank

you all and may God Bless you.

With Love,

The Clark Family

Q. Can you tell me (I hope I am phrasing this

correctly) what happens to the soul of an unbaptized

person upon death?

A. In large part, it would depend on the

circumstances. Anyone who remains unbaptized and

therefore still burdened with original sin because of

procrastination or worse yet, outright defiance, may

have a tough time explaining themselves to the Lord

on judgment day.

The term “invincible ignorance” is used to refer to

the state of a person such as a pagan, an infant, or

someone with diminished capacity who is ignorant

of the Christian message. Either they have not yet

had an opportunity to hear it, or don’t possess the

ability to understand the message. The first Pope to

use the term officially seems to have been Pope Pius

IX in the allocutionc Singulari Quadam (9

December 1854). The term, however, is far older

than that. Aquinas, for instance, uses it in his Summa

Theologica (written 1265–1274), and discussion of

the concept can be found as far back as Origen (3rd

century).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1776 – 1794

explains that God has placed a moral conscience in

all of humanity. This teaching deals primarily with

whether or not an individual can be seen as culpable

for their privations/disorders if they are not aware of

them. When ignorance is beyond the individual’s

control he/she is not responsible before God.

Such ignorance cannot be something that is

voluntarily ascribed to. If one knows the teachings

of the Church, with regard to salvation and

membership in the Catholic Church, then one cannot

claim Invincible Ignorance, for rejection of this

knowledge has become willful and voluntary. Invincible Ignorance applies to one who, "through

no fault of their own" is ignorant of the Church's

teachings.

Remember, God is bound TO His word, but He is

not bound BY His word. We know that water

baptism is the normal way to wash away original

sin. We know there are also the “baptism of desire”

and the “baptism of blood.” Our God has infinite

wisdom and is just, fair and loving. Those denied

access to heaven’s bliss will have made that

deliberate decision all by themselves.

Holy Family Parish strives to be the best version of ourselves as we lift up the fallen, heal the broken and share the love of Christ.

SUPPORT LIFE!

THERE IS STILL TIME LEFT TO DONATATE BABY ITEMS

As one of our outreaches to the community, we collect new baby items for the Blue Water Pregnancy Care Center throughout the month of May. This facility counsels young pregnant moms to keep their babies or place them up for adoption rather than aborting them. Many of these moms have nothing for their babies so this is where we come in. Any items are appreciated but here are some of their needs: Diapers (newborn to size 2), onesies (newborn to size medium), bibs, outfits (newborn to 12 months), pajamas (newborn to size 12 months), hooded towels and baby washcloths, Desitin, baby shampoo, baby soaps and lotions, baby toys, crib sheets, baby blankets, etc. Your kindness and generosity may make the difference of saving a life.

You can drop items off in the bassinet found in the Life Center during business hours, or in the marked containers in the gathering space.

Thank you for always answering our call.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4

Last Sunday was the celebration of Pentecost Sunday and, fittingly, the Sacrament of Confirmation at both Holy Family and St. Augustine parishes. It was an exciting time for our young people as they were fully initiated into the Church as they celebrated with Bishop Reiss.

The students have spent almost a full year preparing for their Confirmation and have spent many hours actively pursuing the knowledge and practices of Christian leadership they will use going forward. One topic that we spent a lot of time discussing in the classroom is that of evangelization. It is our anointing with the Holy Spirit that simultaneously provokes our commission to proclaim the Gospel. One of our eighth graders, Matthew B., has some practical insight into the many simple, every-day ways we can show we are Christians by our actions and evangelize to those we meet daily.

There are many different ways to evangelize. Evangelizing doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to become the next Matthew Kelly. Some every day ways to evangelize are thinking, talking, and acting in ways that show love for God, talking about what Jesus did, and showing people that God loves them. When we think like God would want us to think, we will make better decisions and show more love towards God and our neighbors. Just doing this can inspire other people to believe in God. When we talk in ways that show love for God, huge improvements in other people’s belief will happen. When we talk about how much God loves us, you can make someone who is having a bad day have a better day. You will feel a feeling of accomplishment, and the other person will feel a lot better. If you just walk around really happily, it will show love for your life that God gave you and other people will see it too. The other people will start a chain reaction and everyone can spread the happiness. If we just talk about Jesus a little bit every day, it will strengthen our belief in Him and strengthen other people’s belief in Him too.

Good advice to keep in mind as we are called to a life guided by the Spirit—a calling of peace, patience, kindness, and forgiveness.

Blessings, Ms. Janet Savoyard / Middle School Teacher
