Pastor’s Letter May 30/31 Dear Parish Family, Just last weekend, Archbishop Oscar Romero was beatified, an important step on the journey to sainthood. As more than a quarter of a million people gathered in the capital city of El Salvador, the name Oscar Romero was written among those the church has called blessed. It has been more than 35 years since Romero was murdered as he celebrated Mass in the chapel at Divine Providence Hospital in San Salvador. The terrible years of bloodshed and civil war in El Salvador are more and more a distant memory, but the courage, love, and compassion of Oscar Romero still shine brightly in the minds of his people. Saints, like all of us, are complicated people. As a young man, Romero could probably never have imagined the place he would be called to take in his nation’s history and in the history of our church. But that is where the spirit of God comes in. Romero was changed forever by the murders of his brother priests, especially the death of Fr. Rutillio Grande, who was killed on his way home from baptisms in a nearby parish. He began to preach a message of peace and found within himself the courage to keep preaching even when it became obvious that his message would likely lead to his death. It is so fitting that Romero’s beatification was celebrated on Pentecost for surely the fire of the Holy Spirit was alive in his heart. I think it is an act of the church's own courage to declare Romero blessed. In a sense it is a public statement of solidarity with Romero’s life. It is a way of standing up with him and for him and pointing to his life as an example of holiness. It is no small task and perhaps that is why it often takes the church so long to declare a person blessed. But if you visit the towns and cities of El Salvador you will see so many testimonies to his goodness. Almost every town seems to have a mural of his strong, gentle, compassionate face. He is often depicted holding and sheltering poor children against the ravages of war and poverty. Those whom he so loved, the people of El Salvador, knew long ago that this good man was blessed. Our world still needs courageous peacemakers. Romero belongs now to the whole church. He shows us the way and invites us to believe in the power of the gospel, especially the power of peace in our world. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Did you know... about Bernard Nathanson, MD, abortion proponent turned Pro-Life? Dr. Nathanson was a New York City

Obstetrician-Gynecologist who, in the 1960's, ran the largest freestanding abortion clinic in the world, and was a

founding member of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL. He presided over more than 60,000

abortions, doing thousands himself. In the late 1970's, in part because of the availability of improved ultrasound imaging,

he began to question the morality of his actions, and completely changed his mind, becoming an outspoken opponent of

abortion. He wrote extensively on the subject, including a book titled "The Hand of God: A Journey from Death to Life". In

1996, he converted from Judaism, and became Catholic, being Baptized by John Cardinal O'Connor. He always

emphasized that he came to Catholicism after he became convinced that abortion was wrong -- not because the Church

said so; he was attracted in great part because one could find forgiveness in the Catholic church. Dr. Nathanson died at

the age of 84, and was buried from St. Patrick's Cathedral, in New York City.

4th Annual Fortnight For Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness

In 1953, Pope Pius XII stated, “We belong to the Church militant; and She is militant because on earth the powers of darkness are ever restless to encompass Her destruction.” It is evident in our me that we are the Church militant as we ba le the ravages of laws and regula ons enabled by a culture hos le and intolerant toward moral beliefs and religious prac ces. The increasing rejec on of any limits on personal behavior puts religious liberty, the founda on of our civil society, at grave risk.

Unfe ered personal sa sfac on and convenience, pu ng man’s wishes ahead of God’s law, is reflected in the destruc on of life allowed by Roe v Wade. The Supreme Court may soon issue an opinion redefining marriage which will deny the truth of the funda-mental belief that the family formed in the union of one man and one woman is the basic unit of our society. Robert P. George, the keynote speaker at the upcoming June 25, 2015, Rally for Religious Freedom, asks if we are willing to follow the Gospel today, “So for us there is no avoiding the ques on: Am I ashamed of the Gospel? Am I unwilling to stand with Christ by proclaiming His truths? Oh, things were easy on Palm Sunday. Standing with Jesus and His truths was the in thing to do. Everybody was shou ng “Hosanna.” But now it’s Friday, and the days of acceptable Chris anity are over. Jesus is before Pilate. The crowds are shou ng “crucify him.” The Lord is being led to Calvary. Jesus is being nailed to the cross.” “And where are we? Where are you and I? Are we afraid to be known? Are we afraid to be known as his disciples? Are we ashamed of the Gospel?” To preserve America’s rights of conscience and religious liberty, Catholics in every diocese and parish will come together in prayer, educa on and ac on during this Fortnight For Freedom. We claim our cons tu onally protected right to a robust freedom of reli-gion and we exercise that right by bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel in our lives, schools, work and in the public square. For if we do not know our freedom…and if we do not exercise that freedom, it is already lost.

Religious Retirement Fund 2015 Year of the Consecrated Life

The weekend of June 6/7 is the annual collection for the Religious Retirement Fund.

Religious Sisters and Brothers who have been involved in education, health care and social ministry

in the Diocese of Rockville Centre need our help. The stipends being earned by young members of

Religious communities are no longer enough to support the needs of the elderly members of their

Communities. The number of elderly Religious in assisted living or nursing facilities continues to rise

and health care costs are rising too.

Please come prepared next week to assist the elderly Religious with a once-a-year gift, as generous as

your means will allow. These gifts will be distributed among the 29 communities who serve our Dio-

cese.

Your gift may be placed in the mail or dropped in the collection basket on the weekend of June 6/7.

Brochures describing this appeal are available at the church doors.

On behalf of the Religious who serve in our parishes and hospitals, I thank you for your generosity.

Thank you to Dot Halsey of Halsey Farms

Many thanks go to Dot Halsey for donating the flowers for around the outside of the

Church and Rectory! And thanks also go to Dominic Arresta and Caleb Muller for

planting all of those flowers!

Altar Flowers

The Blessed Mother’s Altar Flowers for this week were given in loving memory of August P. Petrillo and August A. Petrillo by Lillian & Bob Hauben.

I In Nomine Domini Progress :: Bell Tower! This week as you arrive for mass you will be hearing some bells once again. The ones you hear this week are actually our new carillon. These are digital bells played with amplifier and speaker. They enable our bell tower to sound like it has many more bells. Our real bronze bells are waiting for one final part and set of adjustments. When complete, the real bells and carillon will work nicely together, with our real bells being used especially at mass time. The real bells have a beautiful historic sound and the carillon has the ability to do some things not possible with cast bells. On Memorial Day, for example, we were able to play a carillon version of God Bless America for all to hear. I hope you enjoy hearing our new system this weekend. Thanks to all who made the restoration of our bell tower a reality. It is not too late to be a part of our In Nomine Domini renewal.
