Fire Insulation:The emerge of heat during fire may cause buildings to be partly or wholly damaged and ruined. Temperature inside the building on fire reaches extremely high levels in a short time and thus, affects the durability of the parts carrying the structure. In case of fire inside a room, temperature rises to the ceiling from the ground (through rise of hot air). After a while, temperature rises to the level of 1000°C on the ceiling. Since durability of ferroconcrete materials decrease at the ratio of 1/3 over 500°C, ceiling has the risk of being collapsed. Either the structure will collapse and become useless due to the effect of heat which will cause loss of life or property since partial collapse/demolition will prevent access to the building.

Load bearer parts of the building to maintain their functions has a vital importance. To prevent load bearer structure to be affected from the heat arisen from the fire, all cladding and backlayment components should have low heat conductivity and either be fireproof or be coated with fireproof materials . By insulating against fire ; the increase of temperature is slowed down and provides time to the people inside the building to get out and firefighters to take the fire under control.

Buildings and structures are divided into highly-resistant special sections to restrict damaging effects of fire to create safe escape areas. Fire and smoke are prevented from reaching these sections through insulation to the walls, ceiling and floor of these sections. Also, doors and windows in these sections should be equipped with certain fire-resistance properties. Roof and facades must be insulated against fire to keep the buildings intact and load bearer structures to remain firefree during the fire till the fire is estiguished. Also boiler rooms etc. should be insulated to prevent smoke and flame spread, ventilation channels should be insulated to prevent spread thru air ducts and also areas of conduits must be insulated against fire.

Fire insulation begins at the stage of design. Firstly, precautions related to fire safety are determined

according to the characteristics and quantities of combustible matters inside the building. Number of people inside the building is determined and risk assessment is conducted depending on intended purpose of the structure. Based on such risk assessment, fire-resistance duration of the walls, ceiling and floors of the structure is determined.Glass wool (white), rock wool and similar special panels and materials which are fire-proof (Class A) and have high resistance to heat transmission are fixed to the walls, ceilings, floors and ventilation

channels in fire insulation system. Special heat stimulated expandable mastics are

used on the places where installation makes a hole on the walls, floors and ceiling and precautions are taken in order to prevent spread of flame and smoke. Special doors and glass

rovings are used on the corridors which are used for fire escape.

Fire protection is essentially ensured by controlling the fire at the scene of the

incident and preventing it from leaping to the other areas and thus, gaining time until fire is extinguished .

Heat Insulation:Is called the implemantation, installation and use of required preventive applications to minimize heat losses and maximize conduction gains. Technically, heat insulation is applied so as to reduce heat transfer between the two environments at different temperatures. It is possible to extend life of the structure through heat insulation and to provide great gain in heating and cooling expenses. Largely, fossil fuels are used in order to heat the buildings. Gases arisen from burning fossil fuels as product of combustion cause air pollution and global warming. Reduction of energy amount used in establishment of comfort conditions in heat insulation applications also contributes to preventing the increase in global warming and air pollution.Heat insulation applied in buildings in accordance with the laws and regulations has many advantages for people and countries. The most important advantage is financial contribution of heat insulation to energy saving.Heat insulation is applied to the roofs, facedes and the walls of the buildings facing the parts such as

garage and warehouse which are not in use, floors of soil or unoccupied places and floorings which separate apartment flats, installation pipes and ventilation channels. Additionally, heat loss from windows in winter is reduced by specially covered insulation glass units and insulated joineries and thus, entry of solar heat to the building is restricted in summer. In this way, energy used for heating and cooling is saved. In order to take full advantage from heat insulation, all walls, roofs and floors of the buildings facing cold parts in winter and hot parts in summer must be definitely insulated and also, quality windows must be used. Heat insulation is applied to the surfaces of the buildings facing outside or the parts not in use from the ground of the structure to the roof by application of special insulation materials which decrease heat transfer.Insulation on the walls can be provided by assembling various materials to the walls from outside /inside of the building or between two layers of walls. Since all insulation materials are mounted, heat bridges don’t occur when insulating from exterior Also, since the application is made from the exterior, walls remain warm and no condensation occurs. Heat insulation materials to be used on exterior insulation should be specially manufactured for this application. Heat insulation applications between two walls or insulation from interior of the building are preferred to be used in buildings such as summer houses and chalets which are used for short-term periods. In general, in such applications, heat insulation panels are applied to the inner surface of the wall. Precautions should be taken against heat bridges in such applications and investigation for condensation must be definitely carried out. After verifying the existence of condensation, the need for vapor barrier is decided.Heat insulation should not be regarded as a process carried out only with various insulation materials. Heat insulation is a process which should be started at the stage of design. One of the most important elements affecting heat loss is environmental factors of the building and designers should take these factors into consideration.Basic purpose of heat insulation products is to increase conductivity of construction elements.

Heat conductivity coefficients affect insulation characteristic of these

products. The lower conductivity coefficient is, the greater insulation characteristic of that product is. Therefore, heat conductivity coefficient of insulation products is expected to be low. Additionally,

depending on the detail on which such insulation materials will be used,

sound absorption values, performance against fire, water absorption values, freezing and thawing resistance, compressive strength for the applications under load play an important role in material choice. Ease of use and economical aspects are also other desirable characteristics in insulation materials.

Sound Insulation:Sound insulation should be made in the areas where harmful effects of noise must be avoided (houses, school, hospital, dormitory, hotel, workplaces, etc.), in the areas where the noise spread to the environment must be prevented (generator, hydrophore, central heating, entertainment venues with high sound level), in the

areas where use of sound Is Inevitable and conditional (cinema, theater, concert

and conference saloons, Tv and sound recording studio etc.). Sound or noise is an energy type diffused through vibrations in gases, solid matters and fluid atmospheres.

Sound transmission basically occurs through two ways in the buildings and

structures;

1) Air-originated sound transmission 2) Impact-induced sound transmission

Air-originated sound transmission: Sound waves move inside air and induce construction elements to vibrate. Vibrations are transmitted to the volume close to the sound source by moving inside the construction elements or passing through various spaces inside the construction elements. Speech, listening to music and similar activities can be given as examples to typical air-originated sound transmission.

Impact-induced sound transmission: When an object crashes to any construction element (wall, ceiling or floor), both surfaces of such construction element vibrate and generates

4

Page 7: The Most Natural Form of Insulation - Dragosdragos.com.tr/uploads/file/DRAGONBOARD_-_ENG.pdfContents page About Insulation 3 Why DragonBoard®? 6 Properties of DragonBoard® 7 DragonBoard®

sound wave and sound is transmitted to the other volumes outside the volume where impact occurs.Foot sounds, jumping, dropping objects, drift of objects and similar activities can be given as an example to typical impact-induced sound transmission. Different methods are used in restriction of air-originated and impact-induced sound transmission. If sound waves face an obstacle with different density or flexibility from the environment , certain amount of the energy is reflected, some are absorbed and turned into heat and some other energy proceed on its way. Sound insulation basically consists of applications which prevent transfer of sound waves reflected from all parts of the building.

Water and Damp Insulation:All applications done to the external, internal, ground , roof of all structures to prevent the effects of water , damp and moisture to extend their lifespans is called water insulation. The most important danger which affects lifetime and durability of the buildings and structures is water. Water leaking into the buildings and structures corrode the equipment on the body and carrier parts of the buildings and causes their load-bearing capacity to decrease. Water causes deformations in all main carrier systems of buildings; and cracks and breakage occur in any smallest ground motion and earthquakes. Water leakage into the buildings and structures causes mold, fungus, weathering, fade-out and other organic matters to occur, which may be dangerous for building and human health. Buildings and structures are exposed to water due to rain, snow, dew, underground waters, water for interior usage in buildings (water leakages in wet spaces such as kitchen, bathroom, and toilet) pressurized or unpressurized underground waters on the ground where the building is constructed. Such water leakage causes life comfort to be removed and threatens the building.Damage created by water in buildings is one of the most important dangers for life and property safety in the areas where earthquake risk exists. Water leaking into the installation of building through any path creates freezing and heating or chemical reactions and corrodes the building installation. Corrosion of the building installation weakens the durability of the structure and affects the lifetime of the building negatively.

The effect of damage on durability of our buildings is usually invisible but we can realize such damage when we come face to face with undesirable results of corrosion. A building exposed to corrosion is unlikely to stand in a major earthquake. Therefore, water insulation has vital importance in earthquake prone countries like Turkey.

Damaging effects of corrosion:Generally, concrete protects the installation embedded in against corrosion. Once the installation is embedded into the concrete, a thin film layer sticks to the steel and creates durability against corrosion. This durability is directly connected to high alkaline atmosphere of concrete and electrical resistance. Ions inside the damp in capillary gaps of concrete play a role in electric conductivity. Formation of iron oxide at the surface of the structure at a size of 2.5 times larger than its volume at a environmentally conditioned speed. If there is a problem of insufficient depth of concrete cover, may crack. Installation appears once concrete is poured. Increase in corrosion rate becomes inevitable due to contact with air. Loss

in the section of the installation due to corrosion causes the installation to

fail to meet the values calculated at the beginning.Water insulation prevents water from deforming and weakening the buildings and structures and allow comfortable buildings

to be acquired also prevents the formation organisms such as

bacteria, mold, etc. Cost of water insulation during construction stage is

approximately 3% of construction cost. Durability of buildings is the most important element to be considered in respect of human life safety. Accordingly, advantage obtained from water insulation is much more important than cost.

Why DragonBoard?

New building and construction systems which have been in use since the beginning of 20 th century have some negative aspects besides all of the advantages provided in terms of comfort conditions and building structure . Especially in steel and ferroconcrete structures external walls which form the external surface of the building have turned into a seperator that seperates indoor and outdoor environment instead of being the loadbearer structure. Thus the lightness and thinness of externall wall has gained high level of importance also as a design criteria. However, as a result of this, it has become a requirement to design the outer wall in such manner that it holds separate functions and consists of different materials and layers instead of a homogeneous, single-layer and thick wall used in masonry systems in order that such outer wall can function depending on various environmental factors. All construction materials used in construction of wall are capable of directly and indirectly absorbing the damp in the environment, storing ,carrying It through the building and finally throwing it away from the structure. Among damp transmission types, under ordinary conditions, the most common one is vapor diffusion. Vapor diffusion is not a problem when used in traditional construction and building systems which are constructed by homogeneous and thick, masonry walls or wooden framework walls allowing easy transfer of air and damp. However, since different materials used in multi-layered walls hold different damp permeability characteristics, while damp transmitted passes rapidly through certain layers, it is likely to accumulate in front of the layers with high level of damp permeability resistance. Furthermore, extraordinary moisture-damp accumulation; in other words, condensation occurs on exterior wall layers due to environmental conditions or design and application faults except for the damp under ordinary conditions. Consequently, exterior wall becomes unable to fulfill the performance expected and reinforcement in carrying system is exposed to corrosion and is oxidized. Following completion of building construction, in the event that the wall fails to fulfill the performance expected, it is clear that eliminating these problems is difficult and even impossible in certain conditions. Therefore, determining whether such problems may occur or not at the stage of design and taking required precautions at the same stage are quite important in terms of fulfillment of constant performance expected from exterior wall. At the stage of design, many alternatives of external layer which may basically have the same function are likely to be

developed especially considering a variety of new construction materials produced in line with technological developments in 20th century. The most important part of design process is to choose the most appropriate structure and materials for the building by making selections the within the criterias formed according to the level of heat and damp .

DragonBoard® panels can be cut with a quality utility knife upto 10 mm thickness. 12 mm thickness and up can be cut and shaped with hand-saw or portable horizontal saw.

Diamond tipped, hard concrete cutter or hard metal threaded cutters should be used. For minimum dust development the use of sharp and fine cutters is suggested.

DragonBoard® panels are used with C profile, U profile and M profiles, galvanized box profile and wooden profile. Sheet thickness of sheet profiles should be minimum 0,8 mm.

DragonBoard® panels have different composition details depending on the area of their use. In a standard partition wall application, DragonBoard® panels are screwed to the preconstructed studs with appropriate screws. A 3mm-gap must be left between the panels mounted on the profile. Joint paste is applied to the joint gaps . Joint tape is mounted on the paste .To smoothen the panel surface an additional thin layer of joint paste is applied on the joint tape and screwheads. Finally all joint-paste-applied area is straightened with a large spatula.

Constructed partition wall system is ready for a planned final touch such as painting , hanging wallpaper , installing wall tile etc.
