8:15 - 9:15 amThe Basics of SIPSIP, or Session Initiation Protocol, is (as the name implies) a next-genprotocol designed for use in call setup and call control. And asubiquitous as this protocol may seem if you were to look at anyvendor's marketing materials, SIP is far from being deployedeverywhere. But that is changing. SIP is constantly evolving. Thissession will serve as an introduction to SIP; what it is, and howdevelopers can take advantage of all it has to offer. Other topics ofdiscussion include SIP and 3G wireless, the use of SIP in next-gencable telephony, SIP's role in Presence and Instant Messagingtechnologies, and more.

1:00 - 1:45 pmLeveraging SIP for Advanced ServicesSIP is proving itself to be the signaling protocol for the nextgeneration of telecom networks. Its flexibility and multimedia sessioncapabilities make SIP ideal for implementing advanced telecomservices, and we expect to see a growing number of SIP-based nextgeneration network implementations, especially with the acceptanceof SIP by the wireless community. The speaker will explore how SIPcan exploit session establishment, mobility, presence, and instantmessaging capabilities to provide advanced telecom services.

2:00 - 2:45 pmSIP? NAT? NOT! Traversing the Firewall forSIP Call CompletionSecuring the network has always been of utmost importance, but it'sbecome an even more pressing issue these days. Carriers thinkingabout implementing SIP in their networks have a number ofconcerns at the network's edge, including the need to assert somesort of control on the signaling and media streams entering thenetwork, the need to prevent unauthorized access, and how to dealwith Network Address Translation (NAT) issues that wouldotherwise render the network useless to SIP calls. Join us for thissession as we delve into the world of SIP, and the protocol'srelationship with NATs, firewalls, and so much more.

3:00 - 3:45 pmThe Role of Presence in a Pervasively MobileSocietyIn a pervasively mobile society, access to information is no longerdetermined by the availability of communication media but rather bythe subscriber's willingness and ability to communicate. This paradigmprompts operators to look for new ways to increase their subscriber'smonthly minutes of use to drive revenue through new applications andservices. This session will examine the fundamentals of presencetechnologies and standards and their applicability to various VoIPtechnologies, systems, and network environments. The speaker willaddress the specific limitations of current systems such as Push-to-Talkand mobile instant messaging as well as other operator requirements.

4:00 - 4:45 pmSIP Services at the EdgeThe future of voice networking will be based on SIP. Only SIPallows for true intelligence at the edge. The question is, how do wemobilize on SIP and move forward while a number of vendors areinterpreting SIP standards and versions differently? Although SIPpromises to usher in a new era of applications and ultimately newrevenue opportunities for service providers, the challenge today isachieving transparency and equivalency for ubiquitous SIPdeployments. This session will address the challenges, promisingtechnologies, and architectures that will enable prime time SIPservice revenue and applications. The key will be an architecturethat includes mediation of SIP at the edge of the network.

8:15 - 9:00 pmSIP-Based Enterprise CommunicationsPlatformsSIP, like the Internet, possesses the ability to become a great ensignfor service innovation. Voice solution developers must innovate andprovide differentiating services that captivate and retain enterpriseusers. SIP is becoming the tool for solution providers to introducenew and unique services to their customers. Next generation SIP-based platforms will soon replace existing PBX platforms andtraditional communication services. With unified communicationsacross multiple devices and interfaces, users can leverage theircustomer communications and increase efficiency and productivity.

12:30 - 1:15 pmSIP: Savior of Unified Messaging? The idea of integrating voice mail, e-mail, Web mail, and fax has beenaround for years. Termed unified messaging, the deployment experiencehas been as yet disappointing. Disparate technologies and interfaces ledto a confusing user experience, and Service Providers struggled to finda real market. More recently, the concept has merged with real-timecapabilities such as IM/Presence and audio/video/data conferencing, under the Unified Communications (UC) banner, leveraging SIP as theunderlying call protocol. After many years of unfulfilled expectations, the various technologies that comprise UC are reaching a level ofmaturity and sophistication that start to show real convergence. Comediscover the role of SIP in the renaissance of Unified Communications.

1:30 - 2:15 pmThe Business Case for SIP ConferencingThis session will develop a financial analysis and business casecomparing two alternative service delivery infrastructures for audio andvideo conferencing servers — a TDM-based "Service Node" approach, and a next-generation VoIP service infrastructure. The session willexplain how carrier class IP media servers offer capital cost reductionsand operational savings when compared to traditional media processingtechnology, while enhancing revenues and service penetration withnew convenient features such as self-subscription Service Portals, multimodal conferencing, or Web-based moderator GUIs. An ROI-based business case will be presented to justify how traditional carriersdependent on TDM-based access networks can reduce conferencingoperational expenses with a next generation VoIP service infrastructure.

2:30 - 3:15 pmDeploying SIMPLE in the EnterpriseThis session will provide an overview of the SIMPLE standard (SIPfor Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions) forenterprises looking to deploy the protocol into their infrastructure.Discussion will include a review of SIP and the architecture neededto support it, a full explanation of the SIMPLE protocol and itsrelationship with SIP, and SIMPLE-centric applications likePresence Management, Instant Messaging, and mobility tools.Security and third-party development will also be explored.

8:15 - 9:15 amIntroducing WiFi Telephony: An OverviewMobility in the enterprise is quickly becoming a majorconsideration on a customer's wish list. As more companiesinvestigate the costs and benefits of wireless communications, theyface a number of questions specific to deploying 802.11. Thissession will discuss many of these issues, including networksecurity, delivering enterprise-specific features throughout an802.11 network, technical considerations when integrating 802.11into an existing converged infrastructure, and vendor-neutralpractical applications.

1:00 - 1:45 pmWiFi Telephony Best PracticesAdding voice to wireless LANs makes a whole lot of businesssense, offering companies across industries a speedy return oninvestment and a host of mobility features that were previouslyunavailable on traditional circuit-switched office systems. Ensuringthe successful addition of voice to a network that has been carryingdata carries a string of requirements. Accurate and effective telecomequipment integration with existing and new infrastructure candramatically improve voice quality, network capacity, and roaming.Modifying a WLAN into a converged network is no easy feat anddeployments unfamiliar with best practices risk weakening the fullbenefits of Wi-Fi telephony. This session will review best practicesto ensure optimal Wi-Fi telephony deployment.

2:00 - 2:45 pmWLAN Convergence for Business SuccessWLAN convergence adds a needed mobility dimension for IPtelephony and multimedia communication systems. But wirelessLANs are not wired LANs. This presentation will discuss the majorchallenges and recommend enterprise actions. As a result, enterpriseswill better understand the inherent characteristics of WLANs and willbe better able to address the challenges they represent to deliver high-quality mobility for voice and data users in the enterprise.

3:00 - 3:45 pmWiFi x5 — 802.11G Raises the Bar802.11g wireless routers are now widely available, and soon will bethe only kind that consumers and enterprises buy. Offering fivetimes the bandwidth, they cost little more than their 802.11bpredecessors. What does it mean to mobility and collaboration whenthe WiFi network goes from a relatively anemic, shared 11Mbps to54Mbps? Attendees will learn about the technologies leading up to802.11g and their real-world limitations; how collaborativeapplications such as instant messaging, document sharing, VoIP,Web, and video streaming now work as well wirelessly as they doat our office desks; implications for the evolution of mobileendpoint devices; the proliferation of WiFi networks; and more.

4:00 - 4:45 pmWiFi Case Study: S.A Community HospitalAs healthcare organizations grapple with staff shortages and financialpressures, they're increasingly turning to technology to improvepatient care in "the last ten feet." Systems that protect against druginteraction problems, match patients with treatments, and processpatients' admissions and releases are proliferating. Increasingly, wireless technologies, and in particular 802.11 wireless LANs(WLANs), are playing a critical role in delivering these services. Onekey driver for WLANs is the demand for voice over wireless IP(VoWIP), since it allows any caregiver to communicate with othernurses, physicians, and specialists to get critical information instantly.

San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, California hasundertaken the installation of the PACS radiology network anddeployment of a second-generation wireless LAN, and is in processof bringing voice over wireless IP (VoWIP) phones to the physicianand nursing staff. The hospital's senior telecom consultant willdiscuss the high points and challenges of implementing state-of-the-art wireless solutions.

8:15 - 9:00 amEliminating Obstacles to WidespreadDeploymentThe popularity of wireless networking and the innovation that hasled to widespread deployment of WLANs and WiFi hot spotsnotwithstanding, major obstacles to mass-market acceptance ofwireless networks remain. One of these is the ability to transportvoice over WiFi with the quality that users will find acceptable.Today's wireless LAN solutions do not meet the stringentrequirements of voice communications and do not allow for thefuture integration of voice, cellular, and data traffic. In thispresentation the speaker will discuss the capabilities and functionsrequired to truly support voice over WiFi and the remainingchallenges that must be met for enterprises to move towardsnetworks that can support integrated voice, cellular and data traffic

12:30 - 1:15 pmWiFi Mobility DistributionWhat are the pressures on carriers to support WiFi communication? Are deployments of wireless solutions alternative access methods,or is this about supporting application-specific networking? Whatare the deployment plans and what are the devices that are going totake advantage of these networks? This session will take a look atimpact of standing still; the pursuit of the holy grail of mobilecommunications; and the effect WiFi telephony has as the enabler ofthe consumer's choice for an alternative that is separate from thewireless service provider. Come discuss market data on WiFi mobilephones, broadband subscribers, and hotspots.

1:30 - 2:15 pmIs Secure WiFi A Possibility? The growth of WiFi is astronomical, coming to every hotel, airport, andcorner coffeehouse near you. But security remains a stumbling blockfor those concerned that their unencrypted data flowing through thesewireless hotspots is easy prey for unsavory data snoops. There are somebright spots on the horizon, however. The industry is promising newstandards such as 802.11i and the interim security protocol known asWiFi Protected Access (WPA). This session will highlight the securityissues inherent in WiFi telephony and the types of applications thatcompanies can use now to ensure their data remains private.

2:30 - 3:15 pmCurrent Trends / A Look AheadCombining VoIP and mobility is today's hottest trend. VoIP has thepotential to provide the same location-independent voice experiencefor the mobile worker as TCP/IP provided for e-mail, Web access, andother data applications. With the right mobile VoIP infrastructure, auser can seamlessly become part of the Enterprise voice infrastructure— regardless of location. Today, most technologies on the market arelimiting in service quality, scalability, and usability. These limitationsneed to be understood before VoWLAN will see the predictedexplosive growth. This session will take a look at the current trendsand will explore what the future holds in store for WiFi Telephony.

3:30 - 4:15 pmMetropolitan WiFi Access ArchitecturesWireless LANs use radio technologies to provide secure, reliable, wireless connectivity to Ethernet networks and the Internet. Today, the use of WLAN technology is exploding. As with any technologythat is so hastily adopted, there are infrastructure challenges. Movingfrom an enterprise technology to a ubiquitous end user technologyposes enormous issues for telecom carriers, such as radio spectrummanagement, security, authentication, billing, roaming and repair. This session will cover the architectures for wireless networkdeployment for public use, the issues with some of the currentparadigms and some possible scenarios that may significantly reducethe overall cost of deployment and operation of these networks.

Day 2 — Tuesday, October 5

10:15 am - 12:00 pm... Special Double SessionResidential VoIP Round TableThis unique super-session will feature the industry's leading experts ina round table discussion of where exactly we stand in regards toresidential VoIP from the service provider's perspective. Attendees willcome away with a true sense of what's happening in the industry, withperspectives from the leading service providers exploring next-generation solutions, including the latest developments, a glimpse intothe future, and some real-life implementation tales that you won't wantto miss. You are encouraged to bring your questions, and we'll bring theindustry leaders who are best positioned to provide the answers.

1:00 - 1:45 pmTales from the TrenchesSimply selling flat-rate high-speed Internet access and VoIP toresidential subscribers is not a compelling formula for networkoperators, who face heavy competition from traditional and newproviders. What are the services and service bundles which will drivecarriers' ARPU and protect their margins? Carrier customerspokespeople will present real-world cases from Asia, North America, and Europe, revealing how carriers and their vendors have selectedand deployed profitable and market-tunable service bundles, and howthe bundles have increased subscriber bases, revenues and margins.

2:00 - 2:45 pmSecurity in the IP Telephony NetworkThe implementation of IP telephony is being completed at a recordrate without the thought of security for the voice communications. There have been thoughts and ideas on how to secure the IP telephonytransactions and communications with the need to now bring thistechnology into the real world environments. Adding security to thelist of needs in IP telephony is a relatively new concept in manyenvironments and the need is to make sure that there are standards forthe process. This discussion will focus on the integration of featuresand protocols into the mixture of IP telephony to verify the security ofthe infrastructure within the IP telephony network.

3:00 - 4:00 pmIntroduction to Hosted VoIPService providers looking for that "sticky app" that will keepenterprise customers coming back for more (and paying thatmonthly premium to do so) would do well to consider offeringHosted VoIP or IP Centrex services as a way to differentiatethemselves. A savvy service provider will be able to bundle not onlytraditional phone functions such as hold, transfer, conference, etc…but also next-generation services such as unified communications,Web-enabled directory services, and more. Come see what the buzzis all about, and learn what Hosted VoIP can do for you.

Day 3 — Wednesday, October 6

8:15 - 9:15 amThe State of Session Border ControlIncreased adoption of VoIP technology by carriers, and its integrationwithin different segments of telco business, has seen the emergenceof VoIP islands globally. Service providers must interconnect theirnetworks with partner networks for exchange of voice traffic. Thissession will highlight the emergence of network elements calledsession/border controllers (SBCs), which are designed to enable VoIPcarriers to inter-connect carrier, enterprise, and residential networksat the IP layer. SBCs are key to NAT and firewall traversal, alongwith resolving interoperability, interworking and securityrequirements critical for large-scale deployments of VoIP. Come tothis session and discover the state of session border control.

1:00 - 1:45 pmThe Role of VoIP in Cable TelephonyMSOs are coming face to face with an incredible market opportunityto offer advanced voice, video, and data services to their existingbase of customers, commonly referred to as the "Triple Play."Yankee Group predicts that even with declining call revenues fromtelephony, MSOs are likely to realize an increase in overall revenuesif telephony services are offered as part of a wider bundle ofapplications. VoIP holds tremendous promise, with the potential tobe one of the foundations of the triple play offering. Come to thissession and learn what the future holds in store for cable operatorsand the significant role of VoIP for their success.

2:00 - 2:45 pmE911 in a VoIP WorldNationwide, an estimated 200 million calls are made to 911 eachyear. In areas serviced by enhanced 911, the call is routed to theproper local 911 center for the caller location, and the local 911center has equipment and database information that display thecaller's phone number and address to the call taker. With thetransition to VoIP and WiFi telephony, tracing emergency calls andtracking the caller's location becomes more challenging.Furthermore, regulatory issues surrounding E911 remain at theforefront of the telecommunications discussion in Washington, D.C.Come to this session and learn all about this compelling topic.

Day 2 — Tuesday, October 5

10:15 - 11:00 amAchieving True QoS When Deploying VoIPManaging VoIP QoS is complex because it involves both data andvoice components that are in different networks, have different supportorganizations, and have different philosophies. If both networks are toconverge, IP networks (i.e., data) must be enhanced with mechanismsto ensure the QoS to that of voice networks. Explore why voice qualityis best viewed from an end-to-end perspective; that is, regardless ofwhat technologies are employed, metrics must be measured in terms ofthe end user's experience. The end user's qualitative perception canmake measuring these metrics quite challenging.

11:15 am - 12:00 pmChoosing the Right VoIP ProtocolsSIP might just be the protocol of the future, but it may not be the onethat service providers should turn to completely today. This sessionwill explore the pros and cons provided by each of the main VoIPprotocols - SIP, MGCP and SCCP - with an in-depth look at thefactors that a service provider should consider (cost, features, etc.)when choosing VoIP equipment. It will also take a case study lookat why carriers such as Primus choose MGCP as its protocol ofchoice for its recent launch of VoIP services.

1:00 - 1:45 pmOpen Source & IP Telephony — Happy TogetherOpen Source has the potential to bring PC-like economics and multi-vendor solutions to the telephony market, providing similar price andinnovation benefits to the enterprise. Fundamentally, this will forcethe telephony market to re-examine the current model of verticallyintegrated single-vendor solutions to the more open model typical ofthe information technology (IT) sector. For customers, open source IPPBX solutions provide tremendous value and benefits and open upnew avenues for innovation across the solution stack. It enablescustomers to lower network administration costs and reduce TCO forenterprise communications, allowing a more rapid ROI.

Day 2 — Tuesday, October 5

2:00 - 2:45 pmThe Importance of Testing Tools andQuality AssuranceAt the current fast pace of the VoIP industry, with standardsconstantly evolving and the ability to almost instantly developinnovative Internet-based features, testing and quality assuranceremain critical for the development and production of high-qualitytelecommunications products. This session will focus on the latesttools and methodologies available to help the IP telephonydeveloper work the kinks out of their next-generation VoIPapplication before releasing it to the cold harsh environment of amission-critical network.

3:00 - 4:00 pmThe State-of-the-Art in VoIP SiliconThe requirements for various VoIP applications vary significantly andcontinuously increase in complexity. These applications are many, encompassing wireline, wireless (Wi-Fi and 3G), residential terminaladapters (TA), IP-PBX, and various gateways. The technical andservice requirements trickle down the "food chain" to the underlyingsilicon. With advances in system on chip (SoC) VoIP silicon, it is not anexaggeration to talk about TA-on-a-chip, IP-PBX-on-a-chip, or evenGW-on-a-chip. While complex advanced silicon is being pulled bydifferent applications in somewhat different directions, there are basiccommonalities. This presentation covers the latest requirement trendsacross system and silicon and the benefits to the evolution of VoIP.

Year after year, attendees tell me that the ability to see and test so many products and services in oneplace is a big reason they attend this show. So, It seemed like a great idea to me to create this special hour-long session where you’ll see many different products/services in action.

I know you’ll find it is the perfect complement to your time spent on the exhibit floor, ensuring you returnto your office completely equipped to select the right IP telephony products and services.
