I shouted, Jeffery! Jeffery! Burford said. But the flames weretoo hot. The door frame melted. Windows popped, sprinklingshattered glass onto the sidewalk.

I couldnt get near the house, said Burford, a D.C. police officerwho was off-duty when he used his radio to call for help about7:15 p.m. I wanted to get Jeffery. But there was no way.

Jeffery Alan Nedoroscik, 42, died inside the three-story rowhousein the 1800 block of First Street, where he had lived for two years.He had written two books and traveled the world for the U.S.Agency for International Development.

By Wednesday, D.C. police and fire investigators had notdetermined the cause of the fire, which neighbors said seemed toconsume the dwelling in seconds, or of Nedorosciks death.

Burford, who has lived on the street for 20 years, said tworoommates recently moved out of the rowhouse; Henian Boone

had just moved into the basement. Nobody other than Nedoroscikwas harmed in the fire, authorities said.

A woman who answered the phone at Nedorosciks family homein Sutton, Mass., declined to speak to a reporter.

Officials at USAID

issued a statementconfirming that ourfriend and colleaguewas the victim in thefire. The agency saidNedoroscik workedfor many years inCairo, Africa and

Croatia, where he served as an executive officer.

Neighbors said they were saddened by Nedorosciks death butalso said he sometimes created problems on the block,occasionally banging his sport-utility vehicle into parked carsafter drinking.

Some linked his troubles to horrors he witnessed in war-torn andimpoverished countries, including Rwanda.

An arrest warrant in connection with a charge of driving under theinfluence of alcohol on his block during the summer was stillpending at the time of his death, online court records show.

On Wednesday, Boone went into the house and salvaged onlyenough possessions to fill the bottom of a trash bag.

I will miss his smile, Boone said. He was a published author.He went all over the world. He will be missed.

Dave Statter: Ive added the video above [see link below] ofthe fire at 1801 1st Street in Northwest Washington last night. Itstaken from in front of the burning rowhouse where one man wasfound dead and shows the initial attack and knockdown of thefire.

Officials have identified the man whose body was discovered at afire at a two-story rowhouse in Northwest D.C.

The body of 42-year-old Jeffery Nedoroscik was found on the firstfloor of the home at 1801 1st St NW.

Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Tuesday night, neighbors and witnesses told 9News KenMolestina that the man who lived in the home ran out, then wentback inside and was not seen again.

An investigation is ongoing.
