WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
MUSCULAR SYSTEM?
Major Functions :
The 3 M’s of the Muscular System:• 1. Movement• Muscles contract and relax to allow movement
• 2. Maintaining Body Temperature• When muscles contract, they release heat
• 3. Maintaining Posture• Muscles make adjustments to you keep you standing
straight
CONTEXT CLUES:Jason made a voluntary decision to go to the Lil Wayne concert. First, he and his friends asked permission from their parents several months in advance. Then, they volunteered to mow their neighbors lawns to earn enough money for tickets. This was a voluntary decision because nobody MADE Jason go to the concert. He decided to go of his own volition.
WHAT DO THESE WORDS HAVE IN COMMON?MAKE A PREDICTION…What do they mean?
VOL ABILITY TO CHOOSE, or WILL in LATIN
VOLUNTARY:SOMETHING YOU CONTROL OR CHOOSE TO DO
What is INVOLUNTARY?
INVOLUNTARY:SOMETHING YOU DO NOT CONTROL; HAPPENS AUTOMATICALLY
HOW DO MUSCLES MOVE?
2 Types of Muscle Movement:
VOLUNTARY MUSCLES:
• Muscles that move when your brain tells them to. • Muscles that you can
control.• Examples:• Arms• Legs
INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES:
• Muscles that you do not have to think about moving- they just move on their own • Muscles that you can
NOT control.• Examples:• Heart• Stomach
WHAT IS MUSCLE MADE UP OF?
3 Types of Muscle Tissues:• 1. Skeletal Muscle• Voluntary muscles that are attached to the
skeleton• 2. Smooth Muscle• Involuntary muscle found in most organs• 3. Cardiac Muscle• Involuntary muscle found only in the heartSkeletal muscle Smooth Muscle Cardiac Muscle

Reminder:• What is a joint?• Place where bones meet
• What is a tendon?• a strong band of tissue that connects a muscle
to a bone
• What is a ligament?• a strong band of tissue that connects a bone to another bone
Muscles Pairs:• All skeletal muscles work in pairs• One muscle contracts:• They shorten and pull the tendons, the tendons pull the
bones, bone moves• Another muscle relaxes:• Muscles lengthen and do not pull on tendons

MUSCLE CHALLENGE:
PUT YOUR MUSCLES TO THE TEST!
Write whether you agree or disagree to the following and WHY:Athletes’ like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Dwayne Wade have
bigger muscles than other people because when they are born, their muscles are naturally stronger and more developed than most people’s muscles.
Muscles grow from being stressed, and then recovering. Burning is a sign that you are damaging your muscles. The soreness is a sign that your muscles are damaged and need to recover. Once they recover, they grow back THICKER than they were before!
FAST FACTS!Muscle Growth and DevelopmentAn infant’s muscles cannot do very much. A baby cannot
lift its head because the neck muscles are not strong enough to support it. For the first few months of life, a baby needs extra support, until the neck muscles grow strong enough to support the baby’s head.
