Be the Church

Acts 2:46-47

46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple

courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with

glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor

of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily

those who were being saved.

One of our greatest blessings is to belong to God’s church. We have the priv-

ilege of living out our faith through this blessed community. Scripture tells us that

the first church met together in the temple courts and in their homes. They met to

worship God and to be with one another in genuine fellowship. God blessed and

grew that church, and we are a direct beneficiary of that growth. Consequently, if

we are to “be the church” in this day and age, we need to remember a few things

about this special calling.

Firstly, as God’s church, we are called to gather together. Just as the mem-

bers of the Acts church met regularly, we gather on a weekly basis. The word con-

gregation derives from the verb “congregate”, the action of gathering together in a

religious assembly. Why is this important? Because we live out our Christian calling

when we remember to come together in love, fellowship, and worship to God. He-

brews 10:24-25 says to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giv-

ing up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one an-

other—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” It is our Christian duty –

and our blessed privilege – to gather with one another, our beloved church family,

in love and support as we continue our faith journeys until the Lord calls us home.

Secondly, as the church, we are to grow spiritually. While we may never

attain any form of perfection in this life, we are to move towards perfection in faith

and love. Our regular gatherings are a wonderful way of learning about God’s Holy

Word and being transformed through the teachings of the Holy Spirit. Scripture re-

minds us, in 2 Peter 3:18, to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Sav-

ior Jesus Christ.” We encounter the Holy Spirit when we gather as God’s church, and

we learn and grow in so many meaningful ways.

The Great Commission

by Lisa Selthofner

On June 9th, Christians around the world celebrated the birth of the church, known as Pentecost. You may recall that on that Sunday many of us wore the traditional red color symbolizing the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles; lighting of a flame that would spread across the world. During Jesus' last days on earth, after his res-urrection, he continued to teach the apostles and ap-peared to hundreds of people. Forty days after his resur-rection, Jesus gathered his apostles in Bethany, a small town on the Mount of Olives. It was here that he spoke his final words to them, which is known as The Great Commission. This commission, or command, is recorded in Matthew 28:16-20. Prior to Jesus ascension into heav-en he directed the apostles to go out and make disciples of all nations... Ten days later in Jerusalem at the cele-bration of Pentecost the apostles began Jesus' commis-sion with the help of the Holy Spirit! The question is, was this command or commission only directed to the apostles? There are differing views by scholars on this question. Since verse 20 speaks to the fact that Jesus assures us he will be with us until the end of time, it would seem to imply that Jesus is looking into the future and calling the coming generations of Chris-tians to be disciples; to continue the work of spreading the Good News of the Gospel to all people until His re-turn! If we are going to be disciples and follow Jesus' command to make disciples of others, we need to know what it means to be a disciple. What are the characteristics of a disciple? Does believing in, and accepting Jesus, in our hearts and minds as our Lord and Savior make us a disci-ple? This certainly makes us a Christian, but is it enough to claim us as disciples? Scripture tells us that accepting Jesus as our Savior is enough to save us and to give us life eternal with our Lord, but what do we need to do to be considered a disciple and furthermore to make disciples of others?

Cont. p. 5, Great Commission

Freedom By Jennifer Smith

I have been thinking about freedom a lot lately. At the end of May we celebrated Memorial Day. A day to re-member all those who have fought and died so that we can be free. Then we had the 75th anniversary of D-day. The day that the allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and turned the tide of Would War II. Many of the men who landed on the beach that day were wounded or killed to preserve our free-dom. July 4th we will celebrate our countries independ-ence which was won by brave men willing to give their lives to earn freedom for all.

I was recently called for jury duty. After being checked in we were told that we would probably not be asked to serve but we needed to wait in a large room until it was determined that they had enough jurors for each courtroom. In order to keep myself from being totally bored I had needlework and reading. After a couple of hours I lost interest even in those things. When all else fails what do most of us do? We pull out our phones. Which is exactly what I did. I had an email from the prayer chain. I just automatically did what I always do when I get a request. I closed my eyes and began to pray for those involved. I then continued to pray about others that I knew who were in need for prayer and also for those in the court rooms. I prayed for the vic-tims, the accused, the attorneys, the judges and the jurors.

I then thanked God for the privilege of living in a coun-try where I did not have to worry about anyone know-ing that I was sitting there praying. I can go to Church on Sunday or any other day and not be afraid. I can

openly confess that I am a Christian.

I now pray that you will take the time to thank God not only for the freedom that we all enjoy but also for those who fought for that freedom.

W e have an upcoming event that every-

one needs to place on their calendar

this fall. On Saturday October 5th will

be the annual Church picnic. This year

along with the picnic and children’s games we are adding

an open house and inviting the City of Henderson to

come and visit us. We will run this picnic/open house

from 11 am until about 4:30 and will include a BBQ, chil-

dren games, a stix presentation and we will close with

some music in the Sanctuary. We will also have a show

and tell by the various committees, (missions, UMW,

UMM, Girl Scouts, education, youth, prayer ministry and

any others that will to participate), setting up tables to

display their activities and functions. Our goal is to invite

the Mayor and City Council along with the general popu-

lation of Henderson to come and see our wonderful

church. I invite everyone to come and enjoy the good

food and fellowship for the afternoon as we put our best

foot forward to the city we live in.

A ll blessing from FHUMC 2019 Trustees work-ing for the good of FHUMC and to keep your faith and trust in us as church members and Trustees.

Give us strength when we are weak, love when we feel forsaken, courage when we are afraid, wisdom when we feel foolish, comfort when we are alone, hope when we feel rejected, and peace when we are in turmoil. Amen. Since our last submission the land lease ended April 30, 2019. The Sanctuary roof was repaired and also the leak in the women’s bathroom was fixed. The two air conditioners were replaced on the west building. The water fountain has been replaced. The Trustees Beautification Funds has almost been de-pleted and donations are still coming in and we are most appreciative for those who have contributed and will contribute. When significant funds are again availa-ble the Trustees will move forward to enhance and im-prove FHUMC. Our next meeting will be Saturday, August 3rd at 9:00AM and all members are again invited to the meeting, and as always, “Alone we achieve nothing, together we accomplish all who embrace the mission

Why do we need a Prayer Group? For what do we pray? There are many possible answers to these questions. Let’s cover just a few in hopes of encouraging you to join our Prayer Group from home.

We Pray to improve our relationship with Jesus! It helps us to overcome temptations! It helps us to determine God’s Will! It helps us to accomplish God’s Work! It helps us to heal! We pray for each other because we need God’s help with our health and physical problems in life. We Pray because we have faith and trust in Jesus to be with us in our time of need.

“More than a hundred years ago, a man in Shanghai names Ding Li-Mei was Secretary of the Student Volunteer Movement in China. During his Student years, his prayer list contained 105 names, but after some years in ministry his list included 2,347 people. When we recognize how God has been our help in ages past, we’ll remember He’s our hope for years to come.

‘I do not know all the benefits which others may have received through these prayers, he testified. I cannot refrain from enumerating…blessings which I myself have experienced in the practice of this habit: 1) I am so much with the Lord that He seems my closest Friend. 2) My spiritual life is refreshed like the sprouting grain with rain… When I talk about the Gospel in private or in public I have and unshakable confidence that the hand of the Lord is supporting me.’” Turning Points, June 2019, pages 9-10.

DRY BOTTOMS

I n August First Henderson United Methodist Women will have their annual School Sup-plies collection and Dry Bottoms collection for Edna F. Hinman Elementary School. First

Henderson United Methodist Church is the only organization in the area that helps Edna F. Hin-man Elementary School.

Edna F. Hinman Elementary School is located on Merlayne Drive between Boulder Highway and Sunset Road and is a public elementary school in Henderson with grades pre-K through 5th grade. There is a high percentage of low-income families and 83% of the students have free or reduced lunch.

It is the goal of the UMW to help in the effort to reduce the discomfort and health issues for the benefit of the children who need clean, dry and healthy underwear, socks and clothes. Young children sometimes have accidents while at school that makes it necessary to have a change of underwear, socks and an outfit change, if par-ents can't be reached.

Missions

O nce again on July 17, the First Hender-son Missions Committee will be serving an evening meal at St. Timothy Episco-pal church in Henderson. This involves

the members of our committee selecting a menu, buying the ingredients, prepping, cooking , and serving the meal to around 100 homeless and needy in the surrounding neighborhood. This is a program that runs 6 days a week all year long, a tremendous commitment by St. Timothy's. Every night a different church, family, club, or group take the responsibility to do this, some multiple times during the year. FHUMC Missions does it once a year, our mens group also does it once a year. The satisfaction of helping persons who essentially have nothing is very self gratifying. I encourage other committees and individuals to consider

T he Youth Group went on a retreat to Marysvale, UT! In Marysvale we stayed at a cabin and did team building and bonding games, activities, lessons, and white water rafting. It was a spir-

itual retreat enjoyed by all! The youth group has also spent the last two months pre-paring for Fish and Stix. Fish and Stix is a major fundrais-er for the Youth Group. We will be doing 9 different Stix performances as well as having a fish dinner for every-one there. It is a great time and it’s one of our many ways we showcase our ministry. It will be on August 10, at 5:30pm in the Sanctuary! Tickets are on sale now starting at $15. Please come and support our youth group! Once again, we would just like to thank everyone for all the continued support, it means a lot to us!

Be the Church, Cont. Thirdly, as the church, we glorify God. Our goal is to give glory to our Heavenly Father. The Bible makes it clear, in Isaiah 43, that we were created for this very reason. While we gather for fellowship and support, to learn about Scripture and share God’s love with one another, our sole purpose as the church should be to give glory to God. That is what Sunday service is all about. Indeed, this is the entire purpose of our lives. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” So when we call ourselves the church, let’s remember to gather together in love, as we grow spiritually, for the glory of our Lord.

Great Commission, Cont.

According to the Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible, a disciple is “someone who follows another person or another way of life and who submits himself to the discipline/teaching of that leader or way”. Wikipedia states that in the ancient Biblical world, a disciple would actively imitate both the life and the teaching of the master. It was a deliberate apprenticeship which made the fully formed disciple a living copy of the mas-ter. But why is it important to give this idea of discipleship any thought? The most compelling reason is that it was vital to Jesus! Discipleship was his chosen method of spreading the Good News of Salvation! Jesus still calls us today to spread the good news and the best way in which to do this is by studying His Word, imitating his ways and reaching out to others with Jesus hope and promise – discipleship!

Freedom, Cont.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

In everything set them an example by doing what is

good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness

and soundness of speech that cannot be con-

demned, so that those who oppose you may be

ashamed because they have nothing bad to say

about us. Titus 2:7-8 NIV

The Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 13-26)

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But

do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh a ; rather, serve

one another humbly in love. 14For the entire law is fulfilled in

keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as your-

self.” b 15If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you

will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever c you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbear-ance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each oth-er.
