By now, you have heard that the new site will use Program Dashboards. The Dashboards are built to be responsive. All data, video, promotional points, and announcements for a given program will be located in one place. Responsive web design is a website approach to provide optimal viewing to relieve site visitors from panning and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to tablets and mobile phones).

A strategic approach to offering dashboards is to ensure that Programs such as ‘American Masters Philip Roth: Unmasked’ and ‘Mel Brooks: American Masters’ are presented on separate dashboards Certain programs have specific-promotions and advisories that we wanted to be sure are quickly accessible. Classic series type programs such as our children’s programming will have one dashboard per the entire series except in cases where there may be a Christmas Curious George special. Specials will also be presented in their own dashboards.

During the discovery phase to launch the new site, information interviews with member stations revealed a repeating theme: Don’t make me go to multiple places to find program information!”, General Managers cited the need, “To verify information for themselves.”, Outreach Professionals requested a virtual one sheet that they can share previews and high level data points by sharing their laptops at meetings with business leaders and school teachers. For Outreach professionals and those leading local fundraising efforts, the homepage details the high points of our program presentations including streamed video. For the rest of us dedicated to maximize the impact of PBS programming, you will find the dashboard has a consistent, predicatable navigation path: On the Left Rail the first icon loads the dashboard homepage. While most of the data within each dashboard is operational in nature information, its landing page will include high level marketing points such as: Target Audiences, minority and niche interests, OB Date, National Underwriters, Genre and streaming video of the program. We are dedicating the landing page to these topics for those professionals who need to summarize such points for community, school and underwriting presentations. Next the envelope icon will load all announcements for a given program. NOTE: You will not have to jump from dashboard to collect the announcements. More on that later. 3) The calendar icon will load all the PBS feed dates 4) The episode icon will load a list of episodes and an online summary of the same data that is pushed from PBS to your traffic databases nightly. 5) The photo icon links you to all promotions and media. 6) Lastly, the activity stream icon will list each transaction made to this dashboard in the date sequence it was made. The activity stream supports your being on top of the knowledge flow available for this program.

1. Social Bar provides quick access to your Activity Stream which in the social media world is called a Feed (Activity streams allow you to explore a running timeline of the programs, topics or people you follow. Timeline navigation provides direct links to information as its added to the sire), Ask + Answer (formally discussion boards) and more. 2. The main menu for the site provides Search (search by people, program titles, or a full site search), your favorites (which allows you to favorite external websites), a central training section for your professional development needs, a list of PBS Corporate Areas and the personnel within, A quick link to marketing materials to help you make ‘our case’, Watch – a central store of all program previews that can be streamed to your desk for internal use only, and more. 3. The center section is our reading pane. 4. Lastly is our 3 Pillar idock. �Over the last few years, we have concentrated many initiatives around PBS’s 3 Pillars: 1) Our being the Largest Classroom; 2) America’s Largest Stage; and 3) our mantra to Open New Worlds and New Ideas for Everyone. The 3 Pillars Dock is a stationary presence. As PBS launches various efforts targeting one of our three pillars, a quick link icon to a “Grab ‘n Go” page will be present. Grab ‘n Go pages are compile assets and information into a single page. We’ll talk more about Grab ‘n Go pages later.

PBS Connect launched in tandem to many ground breaking technologies including Google, Yahoo, and Amazon. However, PBS Connect came along before the Internet became the most used research tool in our daily lives. To that end, the tolerance for a service like Connect was low which ultimately did not provide much forgiveness when the first, ugly, user interface was launched.

Connect has focused on cross-system communication, but has failed supporting communication needed “down the hall” or between small groups.

Eleven years and two face lifts later, Connect has stood the sands of time but its homegrown technical architecture has reached its life’s end. Today’s internet user wants all their web experiences to be the same, Extranets not excluded. In fact, notice the 2010 vs 2011 web trends pictured. SmartPhone and Tablet usage to access Connect has increased (or should we say, charted for the first time ever). Connect, which is primarily a document repository, is not fashioned to perform well on mobile devices. To that end, the replacement site will center more around “Content Management”. This means, more information will be presented on screen rather than downloading PPTs, DOCs, etc.

In response to common a user complaint, the new site will *not* use frames. Meaning any page can be easily forwarded and retrieved via a direct URL. The new site will offer private, self-service creation of collaboration spaces and a customizable homepage for each Member Station employee.

It is the lack of personalization and outdated user experience mentioned on the previous slide that has caused many groups to adopt and migrate to free communication platforms. The new site will provide the same self service communication tools without the pesky license that the public social tools make you agree to, such as: Granting non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with their sites. The question begs to be asked: Why duplicate tools that are already available on public sites? For new hires, it is beneficial to gain quick access to all industry experts (like yourself) in one place. Growing with one another: Sharing on a central platform (which storage costs are at their lowest) allows our intellectual property to live on and on, allowing the next generation to learn from our successes and failures. Will everyone adopt the self service communication tools the new site will offer? Absolutely not. This grid describes it best. There’s no time to lose. Let’s get started understanding what the change will be…
