APRIL GUEST SPEAKER Dr Eddie Lim has been a long standing surgeon in the area for more than 30 years. He has used his talents beyond his Camden surgery to raise awareness about the importance of sight. Photography helped him unwind from work as well as observe the world around him and get him out into the fresh air. He is going to share his latest trip to Morocco and what he saw through the eyes of his camera.

    LUNCH AFTER THE MEETING

After the meeting, lunch will be at Studley Park so please come along. All welcome.

    BOOK CLUB

    - Pat & Ray Cranfield Our latest book was “Nine Parts of Desire” by Geraldine Brookes. Unlike her novels, which we had read and enjoyed, this was a record of her six years as a journalist in The Middle East. It painted a mostly depressing picture of the plight of women in the prescriptive Islamic culture. At our next meeting on 16th April, we will review our favourite books. Pat Cranfield

    CRAFT

    - Mary Michel Our ongoing projects continue this month and will be held on Tuesdays, 3rd and 17th April at 1.30 pm. The new address will be emailed to members of the group. Mary

TRAVEL TALES - Kathy & Malcolm Our Probus Club leads us on many trails and this time it led us to The Kokoda Trail Memorial at Concord where Sue met up with Reg Chard, a veteran of the Second World War, who works as a guide at this facility. Sue created an excellent presentation from the photos he had collected over his lifetime including war time experiences and the visit by the Queen Mother to his Sydney home in 1958. Those who attended enjoyed this interesting and different presentation. It reminded a lot of people of their personal family memories of those times. Thank you, Sue. Our next presentation will be by Carolyn Cahill who is going to share experiences from her recent trip to Japan. Thank you, Carolyn. Special thanks to the people who have already volunteered to present their experiences at future Travel Tales. Our next meeting will be held on 18th April in the Park Central Large Hall.

    FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

“JOHN PAUL YOUNG” – THE CUBE AT THE CATHOLIC CLUB

    – SATURDAY, 24TH FEBRUARY

On a cloudy Tuesday, a small group made the trip into the city to see this play, changing at Central Station to catch the train to Milsons Point. After a quick coffee, some braved the weather and walked down the hill to the theatre while the remainder waited to be transported by the Ensemble mini bus. The characters in “Sorting Out Rachel”, a David Williamson play, were facing huge personal dilemmas. One has too little money, another too much, and the question raised was how can that money be used for the greater good of the community? It affects all of the characters in different ways as they realize the truth they are facing, which they can’t ignore. As would be expected, Williamson’s characters are beautifully drawn and judging by the audience’s reactions, many could relate to the situations and issues so cleverly and funnily portrayed by the excellent cast, particularly between the granddaughter, Rachel, and her grandfather who decides to ‘sort her out’. Following a light lunch, we wandered our way home again and I am so glad I had the opportunity to enjoy this excellent play. Thanks, Joyce. Linda Lord

“SORTING OUT RACHEL” – ENSEMBLE THEATRE – TUESDAY, 13TH MARCH

(Thank you to our Roving Reporters for this month. Please email any contributions to [email protected]. Linda)

Ten of our members had dinner at The Catholic Club Bistro before rocking up to The Cube for the “John Paul Young and The Allstar Band” concert celebrating the incredible song-writing creations of Vanda & Young, whose songbook gave Australia its unique soundtrack during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. JPY and The Allstar Band performed hit songs written for The Easybeats, AC/DC, Grace Jones, Ted Mulry and of course John Paul Young, to a full house and did not disappoint with a terrific rock ‘n’ roll show.

“THE BOOK OF MORMON” – WEDNESDAY, 7TH MARCH

Our Joyce, she did warn, But 23 of us still set off on a Wednesday morn. “Book of Mormon” was our destination, Arriving via a many and varied railway station. “South Park” humour is “black, blue, puerile, witty and satirical”, Said the quote from a paper, And that is exactly what we got from this theatrical caper. There was lots of dancing, there was lots of singing, And certainly lots of door bells, they were a’ringing. Goofy Elder Cunningham stole the show, While his companion, Elder Price, knew where he wanted to go. Orlando was his place to be, From Uganda he wanted to flee.

The tunes were boppy, the voices mighty fine, ‘Baptize Me’ was a favourite of mine. While the content was not everyone’s cup of tea, The show was snappy, and as ever, there was plenty of good company. Thank you, Joyce, great organizing I must say, A trip into town is always a good day. So next time a young Mormon arrives at your door, It will be the glow of the teeth you will be looking for.

BATEMANS BAY AND THE EUROBODALLA COAST HOLIDAY – 14TH – 18TH MARCH 2018

by Ellen Hill Following our early morning pick up, we all assembled at our starting point at Campbelltown where Keith began our journey south. A morning tea stop at Minnamurra and then a comfortable trip to Ulladulla for lunch and a leg stretch. Feeling refreshed, we headed to Batemans Bay and the Birdlife Park for a really interesting first-hand encounter with a python (some members braver than others), as well as a very cute joey who had been abandoned by his mother and rescued by our guide and her mum. A ride on the miniature train around the grounds to see the other animals and of course, afternoon tea, saw us heading to our accommodation on the waterfront for 4 nights.

After waking to the sounds of the sea lapping on the waterfront and a most enjoyable breakfast, we were off on a short coach ride to Mogo Zoo. Our guide accompanied us at a leisurely stroll around the many exhibits and from time to time enjoying a talk on various inhabitants. You can certainly get quite close to the animals at the small, extremely well-kept zoo. Some even enjoyed feeding the giraffes. A short stop in Mogo village for mainly browsing (I did manage to buy a pair of shoes) and it was back to our hotel for dinner.

Friday we took the coastal road south to Narooma where we picked up a local guide to show us some of the interesting aspects of the small coastal town. There were great views out to Montague Island and it would make a good destination for whale watching during their migration up and down the coast. A short trip to Tilba Tilba where we enjoyed more wandering around a small country village with many craft shops including wood turning, photography, jewelry and of course the inevitable coffee shops for lunch. After enjoying a snack of prawns (won by the Hills the previous night in the raffle at the hotel) and some cheese from the cheese factory in town, it was again back to our comfortable accommodation.

With a leisurely day ahead of us, most spent some time looking around the shops in Batemans Bay before heading for the boat trip up the Clyde River and our Fish and Chips lunch on board. We had a short stay at Nelligen before a relaxing journey back and our usual get-together for drinks and nibbles before dinner.

The journey home saw us climbing through the scenic hills to Braidwood for morning tea before our break in Bungendore for lunch. Lots more shops but unfortunately a strong hot wind blew up so that the local bushfire brigade had to attend to some electrical wires sparking quite close to the beautiful wood-turning building. Then on to home.

All in all a wonderful, relaxing holiday with good friends, some visitors from other Clubs, our driver Keith and let’s not forget our Tour Leader, Peter. Many thanks to all.

    Ellen Hill

PROBUS TRIPS FOR 2018/9: - Peter O’Loughlin CRUISING FOR 2018/9: - Anna Degnan

    CRUISING – 2018:

We are still looking for members who would like to join with other members and friends for a holiday cruise. Research is ongoing for our options and availability for a short and/or long cruise. You are welcome to place your name on the list for both. Suggestions for possible destinations are: 1. 4-10 day cruise – Pacific Islands, Morton Bay, Tasmania, Adelaide etc. 2. Over 10 day cruise – Pacific Islands, Around Australia, NZ, Singapore etc. Expression of Interest Forms will again be available this General Meeting. Anna

DAY TRIPS AND HOLIDAY PROGRAMME – 2018: At our club meeting this coming Friday, I will be collecting your payment (unless already processed) for our next coach trip to the historic Henry Kendall House in West Gosford.

    Mildura and Broken Hill

Bookings are well underway for our holiday next year into the western county. I have received written confirmation from motels in Hay, Mildura and Lake Mungo and verbal acceptance in Broken Hill and Nyngan. Once I have written confirmation from those venues, I will continue all other arrangements. In regard to Lake Mungo – there are two options for accommodation, the first being in the Cabins (either double or twin) there are 16 of these available for us, they also have ONE only Family Cabin (which would be suitable for the Tracey’s should they wish to be with us) and at a less salubrious situation, the dormitory style Shearers Quarters which have a combination of capacities, all double bunks, don’t stress, I only intend to use the lower bunks, however if anybody wishes a TOP bunk it could be used (not for me though). Using the combination detailed, the group would be restricted to 45. I will require deposits in September 2018 ($200) along with your preference for accommodation at Mungo Lodge. So first come first served. Whilst in Mildura, for two of our evening meals we will be going OUT. Firstly to Stephano’s well-known restaurant and then an evening dinner cruise on the Murray River, again I have spoken with both of these venues regarding our visit. After having a discussion with Keith, the tour has been brought forward 1 week from my original planning (he has the Russian Ballet coming to Australia again for another touring program) so that means a departure on Monday, 9th September 2019 arriving home on Friday, 20th September. At this stage I expect the cost to be no more than $2000 each - this will be confirmed as all costs come to hand. Please note the itinerary is a DRAFT only at this stage of planning with all arrangements yet to be confirmed.

    Peter

Please join us and take the opportunity of visiting interesting places and enjoying each

    other’s company.

JOKE (or maybe not!) “HELLO! Is this Gordon’s Pizza?” “No, sir, it’s Google Pizza – we bought Gordon’s Pizza last month. Do you want your usual, sir?” “My usual? You know me?” “According to our caller ID data, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with cheese, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms on a thick crust.” “OK! That’s what I want.” “May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole-wheat gluten-free thin crust?” “No, you may not! I don’t like vegetables.” “Your cholesterol needs help, sir.” “How the hell do you know?” “We cross-referenced your mobile with your medical records and have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.” “Listen, I don’t want your vegetable pizza, and I take medication for my cholesterol!”

“Excuse me, sir, but you don’t take your medication regularly. Our database indicates that you only filled a prescription for 30 cholesterol tablets once, at Soul Pharmacy, 4 months ago.” “I bought the rest at another pharmacy.” “Not according to your credit card statement.” “I paid in cash.” “Sir, you didn’t withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement.” “I have other sources of cash.” “That doesn’t show on your last tax return, unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law.” “WHAT THE HELL! Goodbye, I’m sick of Google, Facebook, Twitter and all this crap. I’m moving to an island without internet, cable TV, mobiles and jerks watching and spying on me.” “I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago.”

(Thanks to Bev Gray for this one.)
