Hi my friends and fellow members. In reading through the newsletter at all the activities available, and the reports of all the trips, days out and shows etc. that people have been enjoying, I’m thankful to all the leaders and organisers of these activities. Obviously, there is such a range of different things to go to that there is something for everybody. Why then, do we find that there are members who take part in no activities, and only socialize with others at the monthly meeting? We must all make an effort to bring these people along. On 5 th April I attended a meeting of executives from Probus Clubs in our Cluster. Only half of the clubs were represented, and ours was one of the few whose vitality was obvious. I look forward to seeing you all at the May Meeting and at various activities in the weeks ahead. Ray OFFICE BEARERS & COMMITTEE MEMBERS – 2018/2019 PRESIDENT Ray Cranfield 4655 9478 V. TRAVEL TALES - Kathy & Malcolm The April Travel Tales Meeting saw an excellent presentation by Carolyn Cahill of her trip to Japan with her sister and nephew. Her nephew had been an exchange student in Japan for a year and was able to guide and plan their tour. They were able to share cultural experiences of life in Japan. Carolyn explained the décor of private housing and various food dishes, as well as the scenic views of highlights of Japan. Thanks, Carolyn, for a very interesting presentation. Our next Travel Tales on the third Wednesday of the month will be on Wednesday, 16th May commencing at 7 pm for 7.30 pm. At this meeting, Bob Ferguson will share his experiences in Britain and Europe. Everybody is welcome to attend. Many thanks to those people who have already presented this year and to others in the group who are busy preparing something for the remainder of the year. Please note that there will be NO Travel Tales in June and July. We will resume on the third Wednesday of August. Kathy & Mal

“PREMIER’S GALA CONCERT” – FRIDAY, 6TH APRIL

A group of fortunate Probus members set off for the city to enjoy the Premier’s Gala Concert at the ICC in the city. Following Joyce’s detailed instructions, everyone managed to find lunch and the venue. The ICC is huge and holds thousands but this did not detract from the quality of the entertainers. We were treated to music by many artists including David Campbell who also compered the show, the timeless Marsha Hines, Emma Pask and jazz, and Jess and Matt singing songs from Simon and Garfunkel and Mac The Knife. It was a quality production that we all enjoyed very much. Thanks to Joyce for her organization and securing the tickets for us.

“ROCK OF AGES” – CAMPBELLTOWN TOWN HALL THEATRE – SATURDAY, 21ST APRIL

Rock of Ages is set on the Sunset Strip in LA in the 1980’s. It’s really the end of rock ‘n’ roll and is about trying to keep that rock culture alive, and features classic 80’s rock music at the legendary club, the Bourbon Room. The show follows the journey of romantic leads Drew (Tom Glynn) who wants to be a rock star, and Sherrie (Emma Whiteley) who dreams of becoming a movie star. The young lovers want to make it big but life takes them in another direction. This show was packed with 31 songs from Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and Styx performed admirably and vibrantly by the mostly young local talent to the beat of the on-stage rock band. The energy generated by this vividly colourful show was quite amazing and it never ceases to amaze me how the Campbelltown Theatre Group can produce fantastic musicals with, at times, a huge cast moving around and dancing on the tiny Town Hall theatre Stage. 23 of our Probus Club Members attended the matinee show and 19 were free to kick on after the show with our usual Flower Drum Chinese Banquet.

HENRY KENDALL COTTAGE – FRIDAY, 20TH APRIL 2018

It was a smaller than usual, but no less sociable, group which departed Narellan for a surprisingly quick journey to Gosford as a result of reasonably smooth traffic flows along the route, including the dreaded Pennant Hills Road. Keith did his usual job of skillfully manoeuvring our luxury coach into an impossibly narrow parking area in plenty of time for a very welcome morning tea in the pleasant, leafy precincts of the Henry Kendall Cottage. Our early arrival meant that we had plenty of time for a chat and a leisurely wander around the interesting site, before a very informative introductory talk by one of the ladies on the volunteer staff, which revealed that the name of the cottage is something of a misnomer.

Narellan Probus Club – May 2018 Newsletter - 7 -

HENRY KENDALL COTTAGE (CONT’D)

The cottage was built with convict labour in the late 1930’s by one Peter Fagan from County Meath in Ireland, himself a convict, who received his ticket of leave in 1830. It was known variously as Cooranbean, Red Cow Inn and the Fagan cottage, and was occupied by members of the Fagan family until 1920-21, eventually being bought by the Brisbane Waters Historical Society and opened as a museum in 1963. As a result of his friendship with the Fagan brothers, Henry Kendall was given work and lodgings on the property during 1873-75 before moving with his family to Camden Haven in 1876. The main focus for those interested in the poet is the small room which he occupied, and which contains some artifacts connected to him and his stay in the Fagan household. Apart from the cottage, the site encompasses a museum, a slab shed with a fascinating collection of artifacts related to the citrus industry, as well as a machinery shed and a ‘chummy’ two seater dunny.

We then moved onto the Central Coast Leagues Club for an excellent buffet lunch, a smorgasbord of culinary delights, with an impressive selection of both Western and Asian dishes. It was a seriously delicious nosebag event, which in my case at least, challenged both will power and belt width.

After lunch, it was a short hop to the Edogawa Commemorative Gardens, developed as a result of a Sister City Agreement between Gosford and Edogawa in Japan. Officially opened in 1994, the gardens are a beautifully tranquil space, consisting of a roofed pavilion overlooking a pond full of colourful carp, a raked stone garden and a tea house, all set in manicured lawns and shrub beds, and constructed with that attention to detail which is the hallmark of the traditional Japanese design aesthetic. Again, plenty of time for a leisurely stroll and chat before once again boarding the Keithmobile and returning homeward on what proved to be a much longer journey on account of the traffic. Our later than usual arrival back in Narellan, however, did not detract from what had been, as Wallace said to Grommet, a ‘grand day out’. Many thanks to Peter for his organization and to Mary for the much appreciated morning tea.

PROBUS TRIPS FOR 2018/9: - Peter O’Loughlin CRUISING FOR 2018/9: - Anna Degnan

CRUISING – 2019: We would love to have you join Sue and I on all or part of our planned Japan adventure for 2019. Our adventure includes a Bunnik land trip, three additional days in Tokyo plus the Princess Cruise. Below is the breakdown of our planned adventure, three additional days in Tokyo have been included in each tour as this could be a three day timeline where everyone was together. The airline, flight dates and arrangements are all flexible. Please contact Emma from Helloworld Macarthur Square direct to discuss your specific requirements, costing and bookings. Proposed itineraries are attached for your information. Bunnik plus Princess Cruise – 23rd March – 28th April (inclusive) – this includes three days in Tokyo between Bunnik tour and Princess Cruise. Bunnik have advised that to get the most from your Bunnik tour you will need a good level of fitness, mobility and an open mind. Many of the best sights can only be accessed on foot. You should be able to walk at least 3.5km or for 2-3 hours with no walking aids on uneven ground, climb several flights of stairs and be prepared to board small boats. There is a hill top temple which can only be accessed by foot and involves a bit of walking and steps. The 3.5kms is just a guide and certainly not in one go or at a fast pace but throughout the day. The group would also have to be comfortable with boarding trains and carrying their backpacks – porterage is not included in Bunnik’s tipping costs and extra services may not always be available. Passengers who are 70 and over will be required to obtain a doctor’s clearance before travelling.

DAY TRIPS AND HOLIDAY PROGRAMME – 2018/2019: Day trips for the coming months are a little low on numbers but nevertheless I am sure those who choose to have a day out with members will make the most of things. On Friday, 18th May, our monthly day trip is to Berrima and the “light and sound” show in the Courthouse. Following this, you will have ample time to wander through all the shops along the Old Highway, pausing to find an interesting venue for lunch, which is not included today. Friday, 15th June we are revisiting a venue from our past. At the home of David Parsons, entertainment is the ‘word’ for the day, might even play “Happy Birthday” during the course of the day (apologies to the writers of the movie “Grease”). This is always an enjoyable day and being inside at this time of year is a bonus. For the second time this year a venue I selected has ceased trading, fortunately the staff at Jamberoo Resort can provide a Yulefest lunch on our chosen date, Friday, 20th July. There will be no change to the price structure previously stated for Gabby’s in Berry. I just have to rewrite the brochure. I am still waiting for confirmation for our lunch stop on Sunday, 16th September for our trip to the Sunshine Coast. I have started planning for a short holiday trip to Tamworth, leaving Campbelltown on Tuesday, 12th March 2019 (a five day trip). Things are coming together very well for the proposed trip into Western NSW in September 2019.
