I hope everyone had a Happy New Year and are now ready for a happy year of Probus activities. Lots of new things have already been planned which will lead to much friendship, fellowship and fun. The organization of all this requires the dedication and effort of many people – leaders of particular activities, and members of the Executive and Committee, some of whom will be finishing their stint in office and will have to be replaced by new members. It is becoming urgent that nominations be received for these positions and I’ll be having much to say at our February Meeting about this. Our Club cannot continue on its excellent trajectory without some new officers. With some activities already happening and a full range of group action, shows, bus tours, craft, art and other regular things happening this month, we’ll soon recover from the lethargy induced by too much good celebrating. May you all keep good health, and join us on Friday, 1 st February. FEBRUARY Wen Denaro Wen arrived in Australia after the events in Tiananmen Square and had a tough time adjusting to western life. A visit to the Camden History Museum helped her to find her place within her new community. She discovered that early Chinese settlers had found their homes in Camden so then she decided to make a short documentary on their lives called 100 Yards of Silk. It is the story of the Chinese market gardeners in Camden living under The White Australia Policy. The film was selected as a finalist for the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards. The short documentary went on to win the prestigious Award of Recognition in the Short Film Category. Come along and hear about her discoveries and making of the documentary, perhaps even see it!

LET’S HAVE A LAUGH

Seniors are worth a fortune … With SILVER in their hair, GOLD in their teeth, STONES in their kidneys, LEAD in their feet and GAS in their stomach.

************

I have become a little older since I saw you last and a few changes have come into my life. Frankly, I have become a frivolous old girl, I am seeing FIVE gentlemen every day: As soon as I wake up, WILL power helps me out of bed. Then I go to see JOHN. Next it’s time for UNCLE TOBY to come along, followed by BILLY tea. They leave and ARTHUR RITAS shows up and stays for the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place for very long so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day I am really tired and glad to go to be with JOHNNY WALKER. What a life! Oh yes, and I am also flirting with AL ZYMER.

REMINDER - RECEIPTS A reminder to all – please don’t forget to collect your receipts.

“A BUSH CHRISTMAS” – CARRINGTON RECREATION HALL – 9TH DECEMBER 2018

Another superb Concert by Macarthur Singers, with audience participation when appropriate, featuring a mix of traditional Australian Christmas Carols and other favourites. What better way to rev up the audience, and the choir, than to commence the program with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. Jillian’s musical anecdotes prior to each item were once again delightful and informative particular the story relating to the English Traditional “The Boars Head Carol”. Two attendants in traditional old English attire bearing a large silver platter upon which the boar’s head rested showed that the Macarthur Singers have acting talent as well. The soloists for “Silent Night”, “Joseph’s Song” and“O’Holy Night” were amazing. My favourite however was a beautiful duet by Hannah Kornijczuk and Judy Reid of “The Holy City”. Once again, delightful musical entertainment by beautiful voices…..oh! I thought we, the audience, did ok as well.

TOURS UPDATE: Welcome to 2019, I hope everybody had an enjoyable break. Now it’s time to get back into PROBUS LIFE, another interesting and exciting year in the planning with some many options for members and friends. I am but one small portion of creating interest, with both our holidays for this year being well subscribed firstly in March a five day trip to Tamworth, then in September our big extended trip out through Western New South Wales, including a three-night stay in Mildura before heading north to Broken Hill for four more nights, then completing the round trip coming home through Dubbo. Spread through the other months of the year some interesting day trips, some being repeats from the early years of our club and with some new venues thrown into the mix. The first in February is a repeat cruise on the” Lady Kendall 2” on Brisbane Waters with an afternoon visit to Distillery Botanica where we can sample some of their unusual liqueurs. We will not be having our regular monthly trip in April as the third Friday is Good Friday, so I am suggesting that we could visit the Royal Easter Show for Seniors day.
