This fine elegy / character study /object poem is rich with poignant, multi-generational details! The skilling usedfour-line stanzas [to] nicely structure thepoem. The “narrative” of the poem seemsto move inexorably to the closing single-line stanza.
This word-play surrealist romp worksbecause of the delight in language that isevidenced in the poem. The reader appre-ciates that inspired silliness is the order ofthe day—based especially on soundeffects which help establish a species ofdream logic such as a poem of this typerequires.

Five items comprised this month’simpressions. The first, “Dr. Bracket,Office Upstairs,” read very much like theReader’s Digest article that it once was,though it was further condensed. Ienjoyed the easy writing style and thestory. “Question,” the second piece, wasa familiar query that often used to be apart of a job application. Having read itmany times in many incarnations, I stillfound the punchline amusing. “AnotherQuestion” was about a biker gang alphawho tries to save a woman from throwingherself off a bridge. “Really,” a quip abouta woman propositioned by a park beggar,was a curious piece. I think today’sversion would have included some exple-tives. The last item, “Did You Know,”was about the woman who inventedcorrection fluid, and I did actually know.Her son was Mike Nesmith from TV’sThe Monkees, and it has become part ofhis canon as a musician and a film maker.I found half a dozen errors, but greatlyenjoyed the issue nonetheless.
Marti’s Mouser, Number 155,August 2018, published by MarthaBabcock Abell.
This issue of the Mouser shares familyvisits and other goings on in Rome, NewYork. I liked very much that I had to lookup the word “gambol” (it can mean
frolic), in Marti’s description of the twinfawns. Marti mentions the Bliss traintragedy of Ashtabula, which I read of butdid not know there was a museum. Lastly,I am glad she is enjoying a new vegetablestand, complete with ice cream. I did findhalf a dozen errors, though the copyflowed well.
Postcards to John Winslow Snyder,No. 9, September 2018, published by BillBoys.
I am enjoying the postcard series verymuch, with an eye to content and humor.The photo of the gazebo was beautifulwith the clouds above and the greenerybelow, the lake quietly nestled in thebackground between. I also enjoyed theother photos more directly related toNAPA business. The printing was superb,all the detail, amazing.
The Pearl, Number 16, September2018, published by Peter Schaub.
“Interlocking Stories” was a fascinat-ing read by Peter Schaub, capturing thecuriosity of a voracious reader and aresearcher. There are so many coinci-dences that the story is as enticing as it isinformative. I especially liked the bibliog-raphy! The printing was very good too,and I didn’t find any typos or othermistakes. It was handset and printed bypress with expertise.

A Tribute to Bertha M. Goudy,August 2018, an imprint of the Four DogsPress, published by Gerald Jenny.
Fred Goudy wrote this short essay in1936, nine months after his wife’s death.It was printed as a broadside in a limitededition, set in the as yet unnamed fontdesign, which he eventually settled onBertham, her first name and middle initial.It is wonderful to see this piece broughtback to life and shared with others. I didnot find any mistakes or typos, and it wasbeautifully handset and well printed on aKelsey.

“Rescuing a V45” was Hal’s openingitem, and it was a story told so smoothly,I was surprised when it was over. Iexpected the engine light to foreshadowdisaster, but it turned out to be a redherring. Item #2 was “Merle’s Pearls,”653-665. Uneven internal rhymes andunexpected rhythms tossed and turnedthrough the list of Pearls. “Did YouKnow” wrapped up the issue with aparagraph about hybrid berries, though Icould have sworn that a Marion Berry wasa politician.
Ohkee-Doekee, No. 91, Sometimein 2018, published by Dave Schwartz.
I am so happy to be reviewing the No.91 of Ohkee-Doekee, because Mr. Schwartzis alive to publish it. In this issue, Dave
shares the story of his very big heartattack and the resulting surgeries andrehab. I am glad you were able to walk into the ER yourself and tell them what waswrong! On the second item, I didn’t haveany trouble with the list of names, except,of course, #5, who was the Pope. I’venever been Catholic and so have been outof the Pope loop. On the back page, Ienjoyed the “Deja-moo!” Get well soonMr. Schwartz!
Postcards to John Winslow Synder,No. 10, October 2018, published by BillBoys.
The current postcard holds so muchhistory in its details that it felt heavy inmy hand. I love the idea of giving aprinting press a 100th Birthday Party, andthe balloons in the picture made it lookfestive. I also enjoyed the pictures of Billand Ruth with the Chandler & Price OldStyle, and the tale of the press’ history onthe reverse side of the post card. On theparagraph below, Bill has such goodhandwriting, it looks too perfect to be freehand.

This “little note” is packed with a lotof information, revealing many of thecomponents of the post card series. It wasmost enlightening, so I, too, wonder whyit wasn’t printed as a guide with the firstpostcard! I especially liked the descriptionof making the stamp, using many layersto make it appear the fictional stamp wasauthentic. The postcard series is verycreative and well executed.

This issue contains three poems byJean Calkins, “Seasons Spring Eternal,”“World Gone Awry,” and “Snookered.”I like much of Jean’s poetry, but of thisselection, I probably would say I liked“Snookered” the best. The first poem wasa bit clunky. The second had a typo andappeared to be about terrorism (I couldn’tfind a different metaphor that worked).On the back, “Did You Know” told thestory of the interesting invention of sun-screen. “Chocolate Saved My Life” wasamusing. Keep eating that chocolate Hal!
Manuscript Monthly, November2018, published by Marc Brosey.
It is good to see the Manuscript Monthlyin the bundles again. It was also nice tosee Kent Clair Chamberlain’s work inprint, this time the poem is about vine-yards, and it captured the single imagewell. I welcome the return of the manu-script journal list, as it makes organizationof the monthly materials so easy. It is alsovery handy when it is time to nominatelaureates. The main nine-page article wasby Marc himself. He described the trip inthe diesel truck to retrieve Jake Warner’spresses. The article focused on how hefigured out the diesel system of gassingup and the mysteries of the DEF tank.Marc describes technical information sovery well that one feels they have learnedsomething from his articles. Good to seeyou back in print, too, Marc.
My Old Home Places, No. 3,November 2018, published by Bill Boys.
It is always fun to hear about Bill’shome places and the memories he has
from that time. In the current issue, Billshares the good times and bad, beginningwith a six year old’s perspective. Hiswriting style is very much that of theobserver, as he tells the bits of memorieswithout judgment or emotion. Besidesliking the contents, I celebrate the simplenature of the publication, as it shows howone can make a journal with only a penand paper. The clarity of his handwritingstill amazes me.

This publication shows how our per-sonal information will appear in the NA.The columns are easy to read and pleasingto the eye. Bill asks of each of us, “Checkyour listing, please.” Further, he asks usto “notify [him] quickly if your listing isincorrect or not what you intended.”Thank you, Bill.

The membership list of 1890 (NAVol. XIII, No. 1) appears to be from theold days of NAPA by being reprinted ina brown, sepia-looking shade. I can barelymake out the names and addresses thatwere often incomplete by today’s stan-dards. The typeset paragraph on thereverse side of the postcard describes howthe listing of names and addresses cameto be in 1876. The handwritten portionexplains to “Winslow” how different ouraddresses look today. I wonder if Mr.John Winslow Snyder is listening and ifhe approves of our newfangled ways.

Happy Holidays toeveryone. I hope theholiday season and2019 bring good thingsto all. As I get older theholiday seasons gethere quicker each year.This year has been noexception. I am looking
forward to sharing the holidays withfamily and friends. I’m in the process ofhandcrafting gifts and soon will bemaking the several varieties of fudge thateveryone expects.
Now down to NAPA business: Our2019 convention will be in East Lansing,Michigan. Arie Koelewyn is our conven-tion host. I haven’t received the proposeddates yet.
I still need to fill the Official Editorposition. Bill Boys has been pro tem editor.He has done an exceptional job. We alsoneed a Nominating Committee chair. SoI’m looking for people that may be inter-ested in tackling those positions. If inter-ested, please email or call me. See page 1for email and phone number.
Secondly, I want to remind themembership that it is time to get thoseLaureate nominations in to ArieKoelewyn. Remember that you shouldmail in a copy of the item you are nomi-nating along with the nomination. If youdo not have the publication needed,Harold Shive (Jan.-Sept.) or Marc Brosey(Oct-Dec) may have an extra copy.
I always think I may add to thebundles but have not done so in manyyears. Maybe 2019 will be different andI’ll finally send in a journal. ●
The Fifth Klosterman Year,2017 - 2018

Michelle Klosterman was elected fora record fifth consecutive term as Presi-dent. She is to be commended for tryingto hold the organization together. Thoughthis means that no other member waswilling to run for the office of President.
The bundles were slim again this yearthough there was a slight increase. Therewere 78 pieces in the bundles this year asopposed to only 72 last year. (Ballots andballot envelopes were not counted.) Whilelast year had 18 different publishersparticipate, this year there were only 13different publishers. The increase inbundle pieces was largely due to theheroic efforts of Bill Boys. He had 31journals in the bundles trying to show ushow “easy” it is to get a paper into thebundle. Nancy Heber was second with11, which of course were printed by BillBoys. This was in addition to handling thejob of Secretary-Treasurer for the associ-ation, not an easy task in itself.
Michelle also took on the the job ofediting the first issue of Volume 140 ofThe National Amateur since no willingcandidate stepped up and even thoughshe had never handled a job of thatmagnitude before. May I say she did avery good job for a first try. Bill Boysvolunteered to do the December issueand as it turned out he continued with theMarch and June issues. Again no onecould be found who was willing to take astab at the job.

I consented to continue asHistorian, though writing this report isthe toughest part of the job for me. MarkBarbour accepted appointment as theconsolidated Director of Publicity &Recruitment. He promptly began tosupply our Mailer with printed envelopesfor the monthly bundles.
The year concluded with our conven-tion held at the Lodge at Geneva-on-theLake on July 16 thru 18, 2018. Theaccommodations were outstanding, aswas the meal served at our banquet.

Just before press timewe received the sad newsof Marti’s passing, evi-dently on Nov. 29 or 30.This very warm obituarywas written by her daugh-ter Karin, I think.
Martha Anne BabcockAbell, a resident of Rome,Pa., formerly of Fulton,
N.Y. and Cranford, N.J., died peacefullyafter a long period of declining health. Shewas 78 years old and had been married tothe love of her life for 53 years.
She was born on April 29, 1940, thedaughter of Helen Kolmorgen Babcockand Alfred Penn Babcock. She attendedschool in Cranford, N.J., where she wasactive in Girl Scouts, the MethodistChurch, and various musical endeavors.She won the Betty Crocker Homemakerof the Year award and could make acheese soufflé that seldom fell.
She met her future husband, GuyWalter Abell, when they were both study-ing Education at SUNY Oswego. Shetaught school in Fulton N.Y., where sheand Guy settled for the next 33 years. Thearrival of her daughters, Susan Elizabethand Karin Martha, put her teaching careeron hold. During that time, she was a roommother, a Girl Scout leader, and devotedtime to her many enthusiasms, volunteer-ing for political campaigns. learning tobelly dance and baking cookies forendless events.
Marti was always clever with herhands. She made many of her ownclothes, as well as clothing for her daugh-ters and their dolls. In 1976, she sewedBicentennial outfits for the whole family,
including beloved dolls. For years, everyfriend who had a new baby received ahandmade Raggedy Ann or Andy doll.She sewed an entire set of Noah’s Arkanimals and a set of winsome Panda bearsfor her daughters. She made cross-stitchquilt tops that she hand quilted for herhusband and daughters. She learned tohand set type from her father and wasknown to write corrections in books, evenones she didn’t own. In recent years, shemade full-size scrap quilts that are exceed-ingly warm and popular with cats.
Marti was a devoted volunteer, givingover 1,000 hours of her time to BeaverLake Nature Center and the RosamondGifford Zoo in Syracuse. She was aregular blood donor, a member of theNational Amateur Press Association (anorganization that was special to herfather), a lifelong soprano, and natureenthusiast. She was a supporter andparticipant of Women in the Wild. Sheadored cats and dogs, seemingly equally,and was eternally charmed by otters andmoose. She loved her home in Rome forthe steady parade of white-tailed deer andcows in the nearby pastures.
Marti was a voracious reader andembraced e-readers, while still cherishingpaper books. She could read a book in aday and always had a stack of booksnearby. She loved libraries and used-booksales. As a member of the NationalAmateur Press Association, she publishedMarti’s Mouser, in reference to her father’slong-running publication, Alf’s Cat. Sheand her husband, Guy, edited, wrote andproduced the Barclay Mountain book forthe Bradford County Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband, Guy,Luther the Wonder Cat, daughters SusanAbell and Karin Abell, sons-in-law, MitchBarron and Adam Constabaris, grandsonsMax Abell Barron and Emmett Zaphod
