The National Ethnic and MulticulturalBroadcasters’ Council

NEMBC 2018 National Conference The NEMBC Annual Conference is a unique conference representing thousands of ethnic community broadcasters. The event brings together government representatives, community leaders, academics, multicultural organisations, radio station managers and broadcasters from across Australia. This is an opportunity for ethnic community broadcasters to network, discuss and debate key issues that relate to community broadcasting, the media and multicultural policies.

The Youth Media Conference, held as part of this conference, is the only event of its kind in Australia bringing together young community radio broadcasters, media producers, community leaders and organisations from a diverse range of multicultural backgrounds. These young people are Australia’s leading network of up and coming media makers and are the faces that can, with much inspiration, shape Australia’s media landscape over the next twenty years.

We acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the traditional owners of the land on which this conference is held, and pay our respects to their Elders both past and present.

Conference Theme ‘Shaping Media Diversity’

The Saturday morning session will have a panel of speakers to discuss ‘Shaping Media Diversity’

Theme: Shaping Media Diversity is an appropriate topic to debate especially when there is presently so much discussion about representation in the media. The shape of our media organisations determines what messages are being delivered and those messages are becoming much more aggressive and divisive. The notion of truth is becoming illusive with ‘alternative’ facts and the need to fact-check everything.

Migration is shaping up to be a major federal election issue over the coming months and how those media conversations occur will determine if we as a nation become more divided or compassionate.

Ethnic community broadcasters already shape our media diversity by being the third-pillar of media in Australia but what role will the ethnic community broadcasting sector play in the coming years and decades; will we be change agents and shapers and if so what do we need to do now that can help shape media diversity into the future.

This is going to be interesting because we are going to bend the rules and show you how it’s done and we need to define strategies for the way forward so we protect stations but can also thrive in the social media digital space.

The aim of this workshop is to explore the basic features of the Hindenburg audio editing program. The CMTO has been working in close partnership with the Danish audio company and have found it to be a great platform for podcast production.

Workshop facilitators will work through the basic features of the program, giving participants the ability to import, edit, clean and publish content.

Session 6 Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF) The CBF proudly supports ethnic community broadcasting. This year CBF will be investing $3.9M to help diverse ethnic communities connect via the airwaves. In this session, Dean Langely and Barbara Baxter from the CBF Grants Support Team, supported by CEO Ian Stanistreet, will provide an overview of CBF Content and Development & Operations grants and how broadcasters can prepare for the next round of funding opening in January 2019. They’ll inspire you with case studies, tips and answer any questions you may have.

Conference Youth SessionsYouth Sessions are primarily about young people for young people, under 30yrs old to; or anyone who works in the youth field.

Session 1 How to develop and extend critical and creative thinking skillsHow to write content for different media platforms and how to engage your audience through difference social media platforms?

Explore the use of critical and creative thinking when reviewing the content we broadcast on-air and online. Professional long form audio producers engage in long self-reflective practices when producing content. We too can do this to help improve our programming and compel our audiences.

This session will cover how to critically review our program content, adapt it for online broadcast and use basic production techniques for better audience uptake.

Information about the CMTOs accredited and pathways courses on these topics will be made available to participants.

Keynote Panel Presenters are:

Farida FozdarAssociate Professor – Deputy Head of School, Research Anthropology and Sociology Associate Professor, Farida Fozdar (aka Tilbury) is Deputy Head of Social Sciences (Research) at UWA and Chair of the UWA Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Working Group. Farida has researched major topics on migration, refugee settlement, racism and nationalism, and how media is implicated in social inclusion and exclusion. She worked with 6EBA to promote positive mental health messages for humanitarian entrants, and is currently developing a project (with A/Prof Rob Cover) to identify the value of ethnic community media in the settlement and integration process.

Rob CoverAssociate Professor – Deputy Head of School (Community and Engagement) School of SciencesRob Cover is Associate Professor in Communication Studies at The University of Western Australia. He completed his PhD in media theory and queer theory at Monash University (Melbourne), and subsequently taught at Monash and the University of Melbourne. He has also previously taught in media studies at Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) and in media at The University of Adelaide.

Maximo Perez-TorresEthnic Community Broadcaster My passion for Sports has led me to start a new profession as a Media Broadcaster and Media Producer.

My current position as Director/producer of a Sports show in Spanish for Radio 3ZZZ which has given me the opportunity to cover sporting events continuously. I have experience in coverage of both Amateur and Professional Competitions such as the AFL, NBL, A-league, Australian Open, Formula One and MotoGP

With a strong personal background in sports practiced regularly in Europe such as football, basketball, handball and athletics, one of my greatest joys on moving to Australia was the discovery of two new sports - the AFL and Cricket. I have since had an unstoppable thirst to learn all I can about both of them which has included regularly attending matches and interviewing players and coaches.

Tibor MeszarosCommunity Television Broadcaster and Manager

Tibor Meszaros began his involvement with community broadcasting in 1982, with an ethnic broadcasting services for Hungarian listeners, which was broadcast both in Hungarian and English languages and was carried by Curtin University Radio.

In 1988 Tibor left ethnic community broadcasting and went in to different broadcasting avenues, such as live television broadcasting and television series and including 10 years of animation.

In 1995 Tibor returned to community broadcasting, this time as a sponsor with CTV Perth. Following this, Tibor became involved as an active participant of community broadcasting in 2000 with Access 31 and currently with West TV.

Waqas DurraniFECCA Youth Representative, Masters of Professional Accounting Specialisation student University of Tasmania

Waqas Durrani is a dedicated and committed volunteer who has spent countless hours since his arrival in Australia to organize various events promoting human rights and multicultural events. His passion is youth education, employment and empowerment. He has contributed to an astonishing array of activities not only in his academic life and career, but also in the wider community of Australia by his advocacy for human rights and people coming from CALD and NESB background.

Jim Remedio Jim Remedio provides that rare combination – experience, knowledge and longevity in the field, with a talent and instinct for innovation. Jim has been a key player in the Indigenous media sector since the 1980’s, including two significant stints as the Chairperson of Indigenous broadcasting’s peak bodies.

He was Chairman of the fledgling peak body the National Indigenous Media Association of Australia (NIMAA) in the early 1990’s for 10 years. He oversaw the management and structural set up of the National Indigenous Radio Service. Was a Director of the CBF for many years, two, four-year terms as the Australia and Oceania region representative on the world community radio body AMARC.

In the 2000’s, managed Radio Larrakia in Darwin, and then Yamatji Media in Carnarvon WA, then moved to CAAMA Radio Alice Springs for seven years. Since 2011 Jim has been between manager at 3KND Melbourne Indigenous station 3KND and the Queensland Remote Indigenous Media (QRAM) setting up the Black Star Network of 17 remote stations is connected by the first Indigenous Wide Area Network (WAN), with satellite redundancy, and has revolutionised the reliability, quality and impact of remote area radio.

I am passionate about innovation and pride myself in taking our firm on the path towards New Law. As a graduate from the University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Laws) I was admitted as a barrister and Solicitor in Western Australia in 1997. This, along with over twenty years of legal experience has enabled me to set up a Quality Assured Practice which provides Price and Service Guarantees across all our areas of law.

Andrew AndrawosDirector on the Board of the Australian/Egyptian Federation representing the state of South Australia at a National LevelAndrew took over both production and presenting of the Egyptian program in 2012 after sponsoring the program for nearly 40 years. Andrew is a 5EBI board member.

Born in Egypt, Andrew migrated to Australia in 1970, completing his Electrical Engineering degree in 1974.

An astute businessman, Andrew currently owns and operates four Bridgestone Select franchises in South Australia holding several managerial positions within the organization including Dealer Delegate for SA/ NT. He is also in partnership with his son in a high tech automotive modification business.

Apart from producing and presenting two one hour Egyptian programs each week, Andrew co-hosts every Monday the station’s two hour Sports show- Football Plus. He also hosts on the first Saturday of the month the station’s ever popular world music program International Rendezvous.

Fotis Kapetopoulos Director Kape CommunicationsFotis Kapetopoloulos has experience in not-for-profit marketing with a focus on arts, culture and ethnic media. He is a PhD Candidate at the University of Canberra focusing on Diverse Audience Communication for the Australian Arts Industry. He holds a Masters in Tourism Marketing from Monash University with a focus on Cultural Marketing and has BA Arts Honours majoring in ethnic community politics from Flinders University.

His company, Kape Communications Pty Ltd, runs projects such as; Bite the Big Apple! New York City Arts Management Tour.

Fotis was the Multicultural Media and Policy Adviser for Former Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and also was the Editor for the English edition of Neos Kosmos, Australia’s leading Greek media outlet and now writes for Daily Review, Neos Kosmos, Opinion On-Line.

Fotis headed Multicultural Arts Victoria, (MAV) and was awarded an Arts Victoria Arts Management Leadership Award, he received a Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, Short Term Fellowship and secured an Asialink Arts Management Residency at the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Jo PrattStation Manager, 4EB FMThe Station Manager at 4EB, Jo Pratt has a ten year history in the arts and music industries, in senior management roles, include 7 years as the CEO / Artistic Director of the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre and Manager of ARIA nominated musician, Emily Wurramara. Jo has over 20 years’ experience with working across a range of stakeholder groups to support corporate, philanthropic and government investment in community service activities and would love to contribute that knowledge to the Ethnic Community Broadcasting sector.

Fiv AntoniouOperations Office, NEMBCTertiary educated in IT and Business Administration, Fiv Antoniou, comes from an entrepreneurial entertainment background and was the owner of the Comedy Café , CEO of the Antipodes Festival, Gen. Manager 50th Anniversary Sydney to Hobart Constitution Dock Festival, Cultural Event director at Crown Casino and managed festivals, exhibitions, sports events and concerts both here and abroad.

Fiv worked as sponsorships and executive producer for 3MBS FM and promotions director for Pan Events - Digital Technology Exhibition. He also managed Australian Formula 2 and AUSCAR racing teams and is a published author of three best-selling motor books. He was the executive producer and tour director for GE concert productions and a syndicated journalist with Neos Kosmos’ (English Edition). As recent as 3 years ago Fiv was 3ZZZ FM’s sponsorship manager before his current role as Operations Officer of the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council (NEMBC).

Terrie Leoleos Speak My Language Coordinator- Ethnic Communities Council NSW (ECCNSW)Terrie Leoleos joined the ECCNSW team in March 2016. She has the pleasure of working in the community care sector for over 22 years in various roles including senior management and community development roles working with youth, families, ageing and disability and alongside new and emerging communities. Throughout her career, Terrie has been driven by her passion and commitment to community harmony, social cohesion and celebrating our cultural diversity.


Giordana CaputoCEO of the Community Media Training OrganisationAn experienced broadcaster, producer, journalist and trainer, Giordana was a long-term worker and management team member of Brisbane’s 4ZZZ where she managed community development and training projects aimed at empowering and engaging marginalised groups through the media. She earned a degree in Journalism from the Queensland University of Technology, has a Certificate IV in training and assessment (TAE40110), produced content for a range of media organisations including FBi, 4ZZZ, SBS Radio, Rave Magazine, The Australian Ballet and Media Monitors

Emma Couch National Training Manager at the CMTOWith 10 years’ experience in the community broadcasting sector, Emma has enjoyed a wide range of paid and volunteer roles at a station and sector organisation level. Emma most recently held the role of Senior Member Services Officer at the CBAA, where she was the first point of contact for member stations, organised a number of events, including the CBAA Conference and Awards and the CBAA Webinar Program She has a strong history in Community Radio starting out volunteering at Koori Radio and spending five years at Radio Skid Row in various roles, including Board Member and Producer.

Ian Stanistreet CEO, Community Broadcasting FoundationIan has been a passionate advocate for community broadcasting for over thirty years. His involvement began as a volunteer broadcaster at 3PBS in 1980 before becoming the station’s first Manager. Ian worked as a trainer at 3BBB and then managed 2MCE-FM in Bathurst where he helped to develop the National Radio News service. He is a past President of the Community Broadcasting Association of Victoria and has served on the Board of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. Ian joined the CBF in July 2000.

Barbara BaxterCBF Grants AdministratorBarbara worked in various administration positions at financial services organisations and educational institutions prior to joining the CBF. She began her involvement with community radio in 1985 as Secretary then Treasurer of 3MDR. Barbara joined the CBF in November 1991.

Dean Linguey Grants Administrator, Community Broadcasting FoundationDean discovered the diversity of expression and voices on community radio in the early 1980s and is still tuning in today. Prior to joining the Community Broadcasting Foundation, Dean was at Creative Victoria (formerly Arts Victoria) developing and implementing funding programs and initiatives such as Music Works (contemporary music), Arts Development (all art forms) and the Victorian Public Sculpture Fund. Before this, he was an arts practitioner, musician and organiser, participating in and organising exhibitions and performances in Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Russell Anderson Executive Officer NEMBCRussell is a communication specialist with 30 years’ experience. He has worked as: a journalist, in media production and management, as a trainer and as Senior Media Advisor for East Timor’s national radio and television station. He has worked for international organization including the United Nations and for national and international NGOs. Russell has significant experience in the community broadcasting sector and has worked in ethnic community media for nine years as CEO of the NEMBC.

Andrew O’Connor News Editor, ABC News WAAndrew O’Connor is the News Editor for ABC News in Western Australia. He’s been a journalist for 32 years, working in newspapers, radio, and television and online. During almost 25 years with ABC News, he has worked as a reporter and producer on programs such as the 7.30 Report and 7.30WA, as well as covering state politics for ABC News. Andrew also leads the team responsible for training ABC News cadets, a role he has held for almost a decade. In his current position, he focuses on guiding a team of more than 60 journalists, producers, camera operators, editors and production staff to serve audiences across broadcast and digital platforms.

Katerina DimitriouBNI Director Consultant Katerina Dimitriou was a broadcaster at 6EBA FM for over 10 years and was part of the inaugural Multicultural Youth Program.

Katerina is the Owner Operator of Perth Signature Cleaning, created in 2006 and has steadily grown and established a solid reputation within the industry.

Katerina has been a member of BNI for the past six years. Katerina is a Director Consultant, this role enables Katerina to support new members in WA Chapters, as well as to meet people, network and generate business leads for her business. She provides support to BNI members through training and education.

Whether it’s in her business, with family and friends or through BNI, Katerina experiences a great sense of satisfaction connecting people with like-minded individuals and businesses.

The NEMBC AGM is on Sunday 10.30 am, 25th November 2018, at Novotel Langley 221 Adelaide Terrace, Perth.

There will be a special Members Engagement Session Sunday Morning from 9am to 10.30am - Youth and Main CombinedThis session, to address our members concerns, was a very popular session last year so we are holding this session again to ask our members about important issues facing our sector. This is a combined ‘Youth and Main’ session so it’s an opportunity for young people to have their say in this open forum. What would our members like the NEMBC to do in the coming years? Participants might also think of key topics that will determine the future of ethnic community broadcasting?

From 10.30am ALL Members of the NEMBC are welcome to attend the AGM.

The 2018 AGM in Perth is not an election year but there may be a vote at the AGM so please nominate your voting delegates by filling out the form at the reception desk and put the form in the boxes at the reception desk by 5.30pm Saturday the 24th of November 2018.

The NEMBC is using an electronic voting system so please fill in the details with name and email so we can enter them in our voting system. Voting delegates will receive an email on Saturday night or Sunday morning 25 November, if they could please follow the instructions on how to open Simply Vote on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop in order to prepare for a vote.

The Voting Delegates forms will ask for your ‘governing body’ the name of station, organisation or broadcasters group that met to appoint you as the delegate. You need to know how many members are at your station because for every 5 members your station has one vote (or part-there-off being 3) is one vote. For example 8 members are two votes and 7 members one vote.) If you only have three members at your station you get one vote. The NEMBC Constitution and procedures requires that, for the purpose of voting, members must be:

Thee NEMBC Gala Dinner and Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasting Awards.

The Gala Dinner is being held at the Novotel Langley and we have prepared an evening of entertainment and celebration of our diversity and our achievements in 2018. We hope you enjoy this feast of food, music and dance!

eChamps is a project aimed at fostering the skills of ethnic community broadcasters and building on their capacity to inform their stations of the opportunities provided through digital engagement.

As part of the project multicultural community broadcasters from around Australia receive free training to develop their online media skills and extend their broadcasting capacity at this year’s NEMBC youth and main Conference.

Training involves how to use social media and other online media tools to communicate to audiences, as well as audio and video recording skills.

eChamps learn the ins and outs of social media, how to set up and use blogs to share information, as well as using audio and visual material effectively. They will blog, document and record everything that happens over the day.

The eChamps team have been at the NEMBC conference for the last five years, and even in that time technology and the way we use it has changed at a fast pace.

Keep an eye out for them documenting the conference, they may even ask you some questions or your photo!

Generously funded by 4EB, 5EBI and 3ZZZ with support from the NEMBC, the grant remembers the achievements of Tony Manicaros, the NEMBC’s first president and a champion of ethnic community broadcasting at station, state and national levels.
