Welcome To The New Art Gallery WalsallDesigned by Caruso St John architects The New Art Gallery Walsall opened in February 2000 in the heart of Walsall town centre.

Our renowned Garman Ryan Collection was gifted to the Borough in 1973 by Kathleen Garman, widow of the great 20th century sculptor Jacob Epstein. Kathleen was originally from nearby Wednesbury, and although she had spent much of her life in London, wanted to give something back to the Black Country where she had grown up. The Collection includes 365 important works by celebrated artists including Epstein, Van Gogh, Monet, Constable, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Lucian Freud, alongside a wide range of artworks from across the world. Our Permanent Collection, formed in 1892, has over 3000 works, from Victorian genre paintings to contemporary installations.

The changing exhibition programmes focus on the very best in international contemporary art and our Artists’ Studio and Artist Development programmes support artists from across the region. Our education and events programme provides a broad cultural experience for everyone.

Maps have continued to provide a potent source material for artists for many years. They provide attempts to create order from a world that is ever in transformation; whether in terms of physical manifestations such as the erosion of land masses or the rapid expansion of cities; or through shifting or contested borders, betraying evidence of conflict, resistance, negotiation and power. Maps also serve to support a sense of identity or an engagement with a specific time and place.

This exhibition brings together a diverse selection of international artists, engaging in different ways with maps, and by extension, borders and territory. Paintings, drawings, prints, video, sculpture and installation combine to create a visually powerful and thought provoking exhibition. The selected artists vary in approach and their works span a period of over forty years. Consistent within all of these works is a combination of the personal, the poetic and the political.

The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a major exhibition of new work by Irish sculptor Eva Rothschild.

Rothschild is one of the leading sculptors of her generation and has gained extensive international recognition for her work. Her practice is informed by an ongoing interest in the meeting points between spirituality, visual perception and the nature of materiality. She works across a range of media including steel, leather, resin, plastic and fabric and her work is often characterised by the use

of unstable geometric forms. This will be Rothschild’s first solo exhibition in the Midlands and the new body of work will include a specially commissioned piece using leather, a material at the centre of Walsall’s manufacturing industry.

Ruth Claxton is known for her large-scale, site responsive architectural installations, which often utilise materials that are ‘activated’ by a viewer’s physical presence. She will use her residency to experiment with retro-reflective pigment, a distinctly contemporary material most commonly used in cycling jackets to illuminate the wearer in a headlamp’s beam.

Following a period of experimentation in the Artists’ Studio, Ruth will create a special installation for the Gallery’s front-facing Window Box.

Twenty years ago, London-based architects Caruso St John were selected to design a new gallery for Walsall after winning a high profile international competition. Since opening in 2000, the resulting 37-metre-high building, clad in terracotta tiles punctuated by large windows, has been a source of inspiration for artists. This residency will provide an opportunity for one West Midlands-based artist to respond to the raw materials and interior of The New Art Gallery Walsall: concrete, leather, Douglas fir, walnut, and stainless steel.

As part of a three year partnership with Tate, the 2016 Interventions into The Garman Ryan Collection are drawn from Tate’s renowned collection. 16 Tate artworks have been paired with related works in The Garman Ryan Collection, linked either by artist, subject or theme. Included are key examples by Eric Gill, Cedric Morris, John Nash, Picasso and Rodin.

The Garman Ryan Collection was formed by Sir Jacob Epstein’s widow and gifted

to Walsall in 1973. Amongst the 365 artworks are many by Epstein and his circle, including Gaudier-Brzeska, Augustus John, Matthew Smith and Lucian Freud; as well as by leading 19th century European masters Constable, Degas and Pissarro. It includes many parallels with works from Tate’s extensive collections of British and European art and we are privileged to have the opportunity to display some fantastic examples in this exhibition, highlighting standout works from both collections.

. Recent Acquisitions Part 2: Landscape and the Urban Environment

23 July — January 2017

Throughout this year we are displaying some of the newest additions to our Permanent Collection, in the lead up to its 125th anniversary in 2017. Our collecting policy priorities include works related to the themes in The Garman Ryan Collection, or by artists who have been part of our temporary exhibitions programmes.

The New Art Gallery Walsall owns jointly with Birmingham Museums Trust a collection of international art on the

theme of the Metropolis, which was generously supported by The Art Fund, and Landscape is a central theme of our renowned Garman Ryan Collection.

This exhibition showcases works which complement these themes and have been collected by the Gallery over the last few years by Willie Doherty, John Newling, David Rowan, Paul Seawright and Emma Stibbon.

Part 1: People and Artistic Connections finishes on 16 JulyFeatures works by Frank Auerbach, Glenn Brown and Laura Lancaster.

The Humble VesselUntil 24 July 2016

Throughout history, artists have looked to boats and the sea as subject matter, sometimes romantically, yet often addressing issues around migration, loss, absence, struggle and hope. Today, the subjects seem particularly relevant as images of refugees, attempting to cross into the relative safety of Europe, flash across our TV screens. This exhibition grapples with these ideas by exploring the symbol of the humble boat as depicted by diverse artists.

The exhibition features a newly commissioned film work by Pakistani artist Fazal Rizvi, together with historic, modern and contemporary works from the collections of the British Council and The New Art Gallery Walsall. Artists include David Muirhead Bone, Ryan Gander, Harold Gilman, Nigel Hall, Eric Ravilious, Jules-Émile Saintin, William Scott, Sarah Taylor Silverwood, Dayanita Singh and Bob and Roberta Smith.

CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS | FLOOR 4

This exhibition is curated by Aziz Sohail, a curator from Pakistan, who spent three weeks at the Gallery on a curatorial development residency supported by the British Council. He has received mentoring over the past year to curate this exhibition and continues to work with the Gallery team, connecting the UK with Pakistan.

Oliver JonesDivine5 August — 20 November 2016

Oliver Jones is known for his photorealist chalk drawings, which consider how the media advertises, manipulates and exploits imagery of flesh. For his solo exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall, Oliver has created a new large-scale multi-panel work, Divine (2016), taking the studio of the tattoo artist as its subject. Emblematic of a religious altarpiece, the triptych refers to Laocoön and His Sons, an ancient marble sculpture in the Vatican regarded as an icon of human

agony and suffering. Through the work, Oliver prompts questions about the psychology of body modification and the role of extreme procedures in the attainment of physical perfection.

Oliver Jones was born in Shropshire in 1985 and works from his studio in Birmingham. In 2014 he presented ‘Love the Skin You’re In’, his first North American solo show at GUSFORD| los angeles, and was shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Prize. His work continues to be shown nationally and internationally including notable collections in Los Angeles, Frankfurt and Istanbul and he was also shortlisted for the 2015 John Ruskin Prize.

Each year, students from the BEd Degree course in Primary Teacher Education at The University of Wolverhampton (Walsall Campus), engage with the Gallery in a partnership project. This ongoing relationship aims to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of teaching art and to equip them with the skills and confidence to engage their own students with the Gallery’s programmes.

The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to be hosting the 2016 Artist Teacher Scheme exhibition. The scheme is a continuing professional development course run in partnership betweenThe New Art Gallery Walsall, Ikon Gallery and Birmingham City University.
