CRI MAP HELPS MEET YOUR BREEDING GOALSDairy producers across the world can now utilize the ultimate in dairy mating programs. CRI MAP (Mating Appraisal for Profit), released globally by Cooperative Resources International (CRI), has unequaled flexibility in recommending the best matings for any dairy scenario.

“MAP, the first comprehensive mating program in the industry, has been used to mate over 20 million animals in the United States since its release in 1966. Currently over 2.5 million cows and heifers in the United States are mated each year through MAP,” Diane Schnell, CRI Education and Program Support Manager, noted. “Throughout its history, the program has evolved to accommodate new technologies and the changing industry. Now we are able to bring to the international arena a new, enhanced version of MAP.”

The new Web-based CRI MAP program was developed to better serve producers worldwide. An expanded sire database includes over 300,000 Interbull sires with the ability to incorporate additional individual sires as needed. The program includes flexible mating options to produce cows for the commercial setting, show type or grazing operations. Using unbiased sire selection, genetic game plans are tailored for each herd based on the individual herd’s chosen traits of emphasis.

ACCURATE COW EVALUATIONOne of the biggest advantages of linear scoring is that distinct traits are individually scored. Within CRI MAP, two linear scoring systems are available. Cows can be scored on a 9-point or 50-point system.

Describing the cow without comparing her to an ideal is another major advantage of linear scoring. The traits are actually scored from one biological extreme to the other. Depending on the scoring system being used, traits such as “legs-side view” are scored from 1-9 or 1-50. In both cases, 1 would be an extreme score for “posty” legs. Depending on the scoring system, the highest possible number (9 or 50) would describe extremely “sickled” or “set” legs. The ideal would be somewhere in between. The CRI MAP evaluator only has to describe each trait, not judge which is best.

The center section of the booklet details the 17 physical traits and two management traits with examples of how they are scored.

LINEAR EVALUATIONSThe important points to remember about linear evaluations within the CRI MAP program are:

4 Cows are compared to their contemporaries for each trait and the differences weighted by the heritability of that trait.

4 Pedigree information is included and a “cow index” calculated and standardized for each trait. This “cow index” is the same as a TA (Transmitting Ability) on a sire and is the basis for all sire recommendations.

4 The system of linear evaluations follows the principle of giving extra emphasis to a cow’s “worst fault,” especially in the areas of feet, legs and udder. This unique approach avoids incorrect matings and assures you of the most rapid genetic progress for your herd.

GENETIC GAME PLANOur unique “genetic game plan” allows you to pre-select bulls based on LNM, milk, protein or butterfat production, reliability, Productive Life, Daughter Pregnancy Rate, TPI™ (Type-Production Index), Sire Conception Rate, calving ease, price per semen unit or other important factors of your choice.

You can eliminate certain bulls from consideration, based on your preferences. Or you can add bulls you might have in inventory that may not be in the CRI lineup, as long as they have a linear type summary from their respective breed association. This is another example of the flexibility of the CRI MAP program.

EXPRESS MATINGWith more large herds using corrective mating programs, CRI has a developed a quicker, express option. With this CRI MAP option, the evaluator scores only the extreme type traits of each animal. All others are considered to be average. For example, concrete flooring makes feet and legs a more important consideration. If that’s your housing system, the computer can place extra emphasis on these functional traits. In another herd, udders may be of particular concern. If the udders are unhealthy because they are carried too low, MAP can focus on those traits to improve the udder health in your herd.

GENETIC GAME PLANOur unique “genetic game plan” allows you to pre-select bulls based on LNM, milk, protein or butterfat production, reliability, Productive Life, Daughter Pregnancy Rate, TPI™ (Type-Production Index), Sire Conception Rate, calving ease, price per semen unit or other important factors of your choice.

You can eliminate certain bulls from consideration, based on your preferences. Or you can add bulls you might have in inventory that may not be in the CRI lineup, as long as they have a linear type summary from their respective breed association. This is another example of the flexibility of the CRI MAP program.

EXPRESS MATINGWith more large herds using corrective mating programs, CRI has a developed a quicker, express option. With this CRI MAP option, the evaluator scores only the extreme type traits of each animal. All others are considered to be average. There is a direct relationship between the number of traits in a selection program and the amount of progress that can be made in a single mating.

LINEAR EVALUATIONSThe important points to remember about linear evaluations within the CRI MAP program are:

For example, by observing the offspring of a previous mating, the evaluator can bring additional insight into a new mating.

ACCURATE COW EVALUATIONFOR THE BEST RESULTSTo get the most from the CRI MAP program, your herd should be evaluated at least once or twice a year. This allows you to include new additions to the herd and update sire recommendations. As herds become larger, owners have found it advantageous, and necessary, to have groups within the herd evaluated several times annually. With sire summaries released three times a year, enrolling your herd on a regular

mating schedule makes it easier to keep current with new additions to the proven sire lineup.

CRI MAP REPORTSGetting your mating recommendations in a user friendly report has never been easier. With CRI MAP you can get two reports – a semen requirement report and a mating recommendation report – in a PDF format. If this report doesn’t work, you can make your own using the option that creates a CSV file with which you can import the data in Excel or other programs. This allows you to print as many cows on a page as you want. Also, many programs allow you to import CSV files directly into a database. This makes dairy record management much easier.
