Advent 4

The Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent CandleThe Lighting of the Advent Candle

Leader: The Lord has his holy arm before all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of Our God.

Leader lights the four Advent candles in silence.

Leader: Our Lord says “Surely I come quickly.”

Response: Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

Response: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Purify us, O God, by your daily visitation, so that when your Son Jesus Christ comes, he will find in us a mansion prepared for himself. We thank you for this time of waiting. We thank you that our time of waiting for Jesus is almost over. May we await the Light of the World with joyful anticipation.

Leader: We bless you, Eternal Father, giver of all good things, for you sent your Son into the world not to condemn, but that the world might be saved through him. Help us to celebrate His birth with joy and faith that we may be drawn close to him, God with us, Christ our King.

Response: Amen

THE COLLECT - 4th Sunday of Advent (Page 158 BCP) Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation that your Son Jesus Christ, at His coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for Himself; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the opening lesson the prophet Nathan receives the Lord’s promise to David concerning the future of the kingdom.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Katrina Brathwaite 9:15a.m. - Erwin Brathwaite

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): 2 Samuel 7:4, 8-16 The word of the Lord came to Nathan the prophet, “Go and tell my servant David, `Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who

3

shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men; but I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. And your house and your king-dom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.'"

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A petition to the Lord to remember the promise to David of a son to reign after him and for a lasting kingdom.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 132:8-15 (7:30a.m. - Page 647 BCP)

18. Arise, O Lord, into thy resting-place : thou, and the ark of thy strength. 9. Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness : and let thy saints sing with joyfulness. 10. For thy servant David’s sake : turn not away the presence of thine Anointed. 11. The Lord hath made a faithful oath unto David : and he shall not shrink from it; 12. Of the fruit of thy body : shall I set upon thy seat. 13. If thy children will keep my covenant, and my testimonies that I shall learn them : their children also shall sit upon thy seat for evermore. 14. For the Lord hath chosen Sion to be an habitation for himself : he hath longed for her. 15. This shall be my rest for ever : here will I dwell, for I have a delight therein.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In words which close his long letter to the community in Rome Paul reminds the new Christians of the mystery now disclosed to all nations, bringing them to faith and obedience.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Maxine McClean-Goddard 9:15a.m. - Church Army

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: Romans 16:25-27

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith -- to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

GRADUAL HYMN - 41

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel relates the story of the visit to Mary by an angel: Gabriel tells her that she is to bear Jesus who will be called the Son of God. This happened during the sixth month of the pregnancy of Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary, who will soon give birth to John the Baptist. Mary is assured of God’s favour and that this is the work of the Holy Spirit in fulfilment of the prophecy to David of an eternal kingdom. The narrative points to the transcendent origin of this child born into history.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible."

Ye Who Own The Faith of Jesus

Ye who own the faith of Jesus, Sing the wonders that were done, When the love of God the Father O’er our sin the victory won; When He made the Virgin Mary Mother of His only Son Hail Mary, Hail Mary Hail, Mary full of grace

Blessed were the chosen people Out of whom the Lord did come, Blessed was the land of promise Fashioned for His earthly home; But more blessed far the Mother, She who bare Him in Her womb.

Wherefore let all faithful people Tell the honour of her name, Let the Church in her foreshadowed Part in her thanksgiving claim; What Christ’s Mother sang in gladness Let Christ’s people sing the same

Let us weave our supplications, She with us and we with her,

For the advancement of the faithful, For each faithful worshipper, For the doubting, for the sinful, For each heedless wanderer. May the Mother’s intercessions On our homes a blessing win, That our children all be prospered, Strong and fair and pure within, Following our Lord’s own footsteps, Firm in faith and free from sin.

For the sick and for the aged, For our dear ones far away, For our hearts that mourn in secret, All who need our prayers to-day, For the faithful gone before us, May the holy Virgin pray.

Praise, O Mary, Praise the Father, Praise thy Saviour and thy Son, Praise the everlasting Spirit, Who hath made thee ark and throne O’er all creatures high exalted, Lowly praise the Three in one.

And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

HYMN AFTER THE SERMON - Ye Who Own the Faith of Jesus THE NICENE CREED - Page 104

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray for grace to prepare for the coming of the Lord.

Fill the Church with the power of the Holy Spirit announced to the Virgin Mary…May the faith of her response be granted to all Christian people…May they be open to hear and obey the calling of God.

Draw the nations of the world into the Kingdom of the Messiah, that those who hold authority may use it for the good of all…May the divine power overshadow the places of strife and violence, and bring them peace.

Bless us, our families, friends and neighbours as we make ready for the holy time of Christmas…Bless especially all the families in this community who are expecting the birth of a child and bring them the joy of a new life.

Have mercy on all who are perplexed and troubled, uncertain where their lives are leading…Give them assurance that God, to whom all things are possible, is very close to them in their need.

We pray for the departed who heard and tried to follow the command of God in this world and have now come to fullness of life in him…We rejoice that they praise him with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints.

We pray in the name of Christ, the Son of the Most High. Amen.

We extend a warm welcome to the Prince Cave Grand Lodge & Rita Grand Chapter

Rose Sunday was a great success. Not just the representation of colour shown in the combinations used by persons in dress but in the interest shown. The presentations done by Mr. David Yearwood to launch the Flower and Garden Festival, and the talk done by Sister Marita Harris, a ‘below the belt lady’ but showing great awareness of the above the belt were both great.

The 9:15a.m. congregation with the young people who were here for Baptism made it even more worthwhile. Thanks to both persons, Mrs. Harris and Mr. David Yearwood for their jobs well done. Mrs. Harris’s contribution as a health practitioner and a member of the Mothers’ Union shows that they are still relevant and the Church continues to relate to everyday life.

A special thanks to all the organizations and persons for their contributions.

We cannot forget our Youth, the A.Y.P.A., Sunday School and Boys’ Choir for the Christingle Service. Thanks for the enthusiasm and support in this effort.

Persons needing envelopes for 2015 are asked to give their names to the Rector. Thanks to all members who have adjusted to the monthly envelope system. This continues to be working well, as we have been able to reduce the cost of the envelopes and also the wastage. The persons responsible for the counting of money on Sundays are finding the job much easier.

We are in the process of assembling a tent to house the playground for the Day Care Centre. The tent has been donated by Mrs. Regine Sixt and her Charity “Drying Little Tears” will provide the equipment for the area.

Flower Show & Garden Festival 2015

The Garden Festival Committee is encouraged by your support and as we move steadily forward, the areas still available for sponsorship are listed below:-

1 Arrangement on the Landing (Upstairs) – approximately $800.00

2 Pillar Arrangements – approximately $150.00 each

We thank all persons who have pledged to sponsor arrangements for the Garden Festival. Your response to the appeal has been tremendous and we appreciate the effort being made to have a successful festival. To this end, we would appreciate if all pledges are paid in as soon as possible.

Tickets are available along with flyers. Take a flyer and display it in a prominent place.

The Meaning of the Advent Wreath (cont’d from last Sunday)

5th CANDLE – (white) “CHRIST CANDLE” – The white candle reminds us that Jesus

is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death,

his death was for our birth! “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and

said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!‘” (John 1:29)

“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish

ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know you are a

teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you

are doing if God were not with him.’ In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no

one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’” (John 3:1-3)

Smile: After being away on business for a week before Christmas, Tom thought it would be nice to bring his wife a little gift. "How about some perfume?" he asked the cosmetics clerk. She showed him a bottle costing $50. "That's a bit much," said Tom, so she returned with a smaller bottle for $30. "That’s still quite a bit," Tom groused. Growing disgusted, the clerk brought out a tiny $15 bottle. Tom grew agitated, "What I mean," he said, "is I'd like to see something real cheap.” So the clerk handed him a mirror.
