"Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?" he asked the owner. "Yep, that's him," came the reply. The stranger couldn't help but be amused. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, 'You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.' Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it; it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet.' When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, 'Here, you gave me too much change.' The driver, with a smile, replied, 'Aren't you the new preacher in town?' Yes' he replied. 'Well, I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you at church on Sunday.' When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, 'Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.' THE COLLECT - Proper 25 (Page 180 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen. REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the Old Testament reading the people bitterly

lament their sins. They are troubled by a great drought; the Lord is far from them and

determined to punish them for their iniquities.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Jennifer Waton 9:15a.m. - Catherine Blackman

FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Jeremiah 14:(1-6)7-10, 19-22

[The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah concerning the drought "Judah mourns and her gates languish; her people lament on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up. Her nobles send their servants for water; they come to the cisterns, they find no water, they return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed and confounded and cover their heads. Because of the ground which is dismayed, since there is no rain on the land, the farmers are ashamed, they cover their heads. Even the hind in the field forsakes her new-born calf because there is no grass. The wild asses stand on the bare heights, they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail because there is no herbage.] "Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for thy name's sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against thee. O thou hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why shouldst thou be like a stranger in the land, like a wayfarer who turns aside to tarry for a night? Why shouldst thou be like a man confused, like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not." Thus says the LORD concerning this people: "They have loved to wander thus, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the LORD does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins." Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? Does thy soul loathe Zion? Why hast thou smitten us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror. We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against thee. Do not spurn us, for thy name's sake; do not dishonor thy glorious throne; remember and do not break thy covenant with us. Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Art thou not he, O LORD our God? We set our hope on thee, for thou doest all these things.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A song of the pilgrims’ happiness as they come to

worship in the house of the Lord. In the desolate valleys they will find springs of water.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 84 (7:30a.m. - page 578 BCP)

1. O HOW amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts! 2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord : my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young : even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 4. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house : they will be alway praising thee. 5. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee : in whose heart are thy ways. 6. Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well : and the pools are filled with water. 7. They will go from strength to strength : and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion. 8. O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer :hearken, O God of Jacob. 9. Behold, O God our defender : and look upon the face of thine Anointed. 10. For one day in thy courts : is better than a thousand. 11. I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God : than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 12. For the Lord God is a light and defence : the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life. 13. O Lord God of hosts : blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this passage Paul, believing that his death is

near, closes his letter to Timothy and looks forward with great faith to the heavenly

kingdom.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Maxine McClean-Godard 9:15a.m. - Mothers’ Union

SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18

For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. At my first defense no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

GRADUAL HYMN - 822

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel lesson is the story of the Pharisee who trust

in his righteousness and the sinful tax collector. The parable illustrates repeated themes

of the Gospels: God’s way frequently reverse human expectations. It is God’s acceptance

and not human merit which opens the gift of the kingdom..

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 18:9-14

Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, `God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, `God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for

Bidding Prayer

May God direct our prayers and lead us in the way of humility.

Shield the Church from pride and complacency…Give to all your people the wisdom to know that they are not worthy to raise their eyes to you, but are saved by mercy and not by merit.

We pray that the powerful and privileged in the world shall know their frailty and not put their trust in themselves…Bless those who work with money and those who deal with taxation: keep them honest and compassionate in all they do.

Grant to us, to our families, friends and neighbours, true humility, recognition of our own faults and the grace to value others more highly than ourselves…Guide those who plan and control the finances of our community.

Visit and relieve all who suffer from heavy burdens of taxation, or are in want through the false dealing of others…Bring release to all who are caught in the snare of their own dishonesty and cannot find a way of escape.

We pray for those who have departed from this life…Look with mercy on those who were proud in this world and those who were humble…Forgive their sins and receive them into the joy of heaven.

Accept the prayers which we offer through Christ, who pardons our unworthiness. Amen.
