Baby fat not good for babyCHAPEL HILL, 31 March—Chubby infants may look

adorable, but US researchers warn baby fat may slowmotor skills development.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina atChapel Hill found infants with rolls of fat under theirskin were 2.32 times as likely as babies without fatrolls to have low scores on the Psychomotor Devel-opment Index test.

Overweight infants may have future health prob-lems, but the researchers say their study found infant-weight status may have an immediate consequence— overweight infants are more likely to take longerthan thinner babies to crawl and walk.

“This is concerning because children with motorskill delays may be less physically active and thus lesslikely to explore the environment beyond arm’s reach,”lead author Meghan Slining, a doctoral student in nu-trition, says in a statement.

The researchers visited 217 African-American first-time mothers and their babies in their homes from2003-2007 and weighed and measured the children ateach visit. They researchers also assessed the motorskills of the children at 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months.

The findings are published online in The Journal ofPediatrics.—Internet

Electricity-starved Bangladeshto halt fertilizer production

DHAKA, 31 March—The Bangladeshi government, aspart of an “emergency measure” to boost power gen-eration in a bid to cope with ongoing looming electric-ity crisis in the country, will freeze fertilizer productionto divert gas to power plants, officials said on Tuesday. They said the decision was made at a high-level meet-ing of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Re-sources on Monday as electricity scarcity has alreadyplagued life all over the South Asian country with mer-cury rising to a boiling point in the recent days.

Secretary of the government’s Energy and MineralResources Division, Mohammad Mesbah Uddin, toldXinhua on Tuesday, “As part of emergency measurewe’ve decided to supply adequate gas to power plantsfor boosting electricity generation by stopping gas sup-ply to the fertilizer factories for a certain time.”

According to the power ministry officials, it wouldtake several days to stop gas supply to the fertilizerfactories and divert the same to the power plants, mostof which are failing to utilize their full capacity in gen-erating power due to inadequate gas supply.

They said around 880 million cubic feet (mmcf) gaswill be saved by stopping supply to the fertilizer fac-tories that will help generate an additional 400-450Megawatt (MW) of power, very much urgent to easethe ongoing electricity scarcity which created untoldsuffering. Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka dwellers, dur-ing the last few weeks, are experiencing at least nineto ten hours of electricity scarcity each day.

Apart from residents in Dhaka and other cities andtowns and farmers in many parts of the country, busi-ness leaders, who are also bearing the burnt, have al-ready urged the government to improve gas and powersituation, shortage of which have already affected pro-duction in export oriented apparel sector.—Xinhua

I don’t like Italian football,says Mourinho
