Conserve natural environ-ment

With global climate change, the world hasseen natural disasters such as storms, floods anddraught and environmental degradation likeheat waves and ice melting. According to experts, ninety percent of the root cause of globalwarming is due to human activities.

The continued survival of all living beingscalls for sound environmental conditions. Manyglobal nations are taking measures to protecttrees, forests and wildlife as deforestation canlead to deteriorating climate conditions.

In giving his inaugural address on 30March, President U Thein Sein said “We willpay serious attention to conservation of forestsand woodlands. We will make all-out efforts toreduce air and water pollution, to controldamping of industrial wastes and to protectwildlife. In this regard, we will lay down a newpolicy in which we will work for economic growthin parallel with environmental conservation.”

Myanmar has had a long history ofconserving the natural environment. It isprotecting land, water and forest resources.Forest reserves, wildlife and natural habitatsare being conserved in accord with the forestlaw. The Ministry of Forestry is establishingregional watersheds, natural habitats and specialteak plantations with the help of other ministries.

Indiscriminate tapping of naturalresources and damping of toxic wastes can leadto soil degradation and water pollution. Carbonemissions from industries, workshops andvehicles can also contribute towards air pollution.

As trees and forests balance climatepatterns, the matter of protecting forests andbalancing ecosystem is on a priority list. Moreover, the people need to cooperate with thegovernment in the tasks for reducing air andwater pollution, controlling disposal of industrialwastes, promoting the economy and conservingthe natural environment.

BEIJING, 2 April—China has developed its first remote-controlled robots capable of detecting radiation and harmfulchemicals in special circumstances.

Measuring 88 cm and weighing 30 kg, the robot iscapable of climbing up slopes with an inclination of up to 60degrees, going down stairs, wading through water, andtaking sharp turns.

Prof Song Aiguo of Southeast University, said, “Thisrobot is capable of detecting radiation and chemicals incomplicated circumstances.”

The arm can pick up small civil radioactive sources andput them into its lead box. When it has spotted a nuclearreactor with a radiation leak, it can picture the map of theradioactive sources and measure the radiation volume. Andall the information can be transmitted to the operator in realtime.

With four “eyes”, it can detect the situation one kilometreaway from it.

Song Aiguo, Dean of the School of Instrument Scienceand Engineering of Southeast University in Nanjing, ineastern China’s Jiangsu Province, also stated, that the robotis the fifth generation of such robots developed by theuniversity.

The programme started in 2007, and the robots wereused by the anti-terrorism units in the 2008 Beijing Olympicsand 2010 Shanghai Expo.—Internet

BEIJING, 2 April—US employment grewsolidly for a second month in March, and thejobless rate hit a two-year low of 8.8 percent.

The figure underscores a decisive shift inthe labour market that should help to underpinthe recovery. Nonfarm payrolls rose 216-thousand in March, the largest increase sincelast May.

But the data is likely not strong enough topush the Federal Reserve off its ultra-easymonetary policy course. Another report showsfactory activity grew strongly last month, although it backed off a nearly 7-year high hitin February.

It was still the 20th straight month ofexpansion. President Barack Obama says thepositive jobs report means the U.S. economyis showing real strength. But analysts cautionagainst too much optimism. The economyhas recovered only a fraction of the more than8 million jobs lost in the recession.

The ripples in Jupiter’srings are believed to havebeen caused by the cometShoemaker-Levy 9, whichstruck the planet in 1994.Details are published intwo separate papers in thejournal Science.
