President’s Message

Greetings from Galax, VA! I am honored to serve as the Virginia State Society of American Medical Technologists President for the next two years. VSSAMT welcomed me to the society in 1992. I have been fortunate to be a member of this board for 24 years. Most of that time was spent as Scientific Chair or State Treasurer. I have seen many changes in the society some of which are great, but there is one issue that concerns me. It is that most members are not involved in the society. You are needed!! Your voice needs to be heard for the sake of other Medical Technologists, Technicians, Medical Assistants and several other disciplines and for the future of the society. YOU CAN make a difference. The Spring VSSAMT meeting was held in Salem, VA at the Comfort Inn and Suites. This was a board meeting and business meeting. The delegates to the Kansas City Convention were elected to represent VSSAMT. By-laws were discussed and sent to judicial council for review. The by-laws for VSSAMT are expected to be posted soon to the website. Our fall meeting was planned and we will join Tennessee State Society of American Medical Technologists in Johnson City, TN for a 2 state educational event. Watch for further details as the time draws near. Our fall business and board meeting will be scheduled to occur at the Tennessee meeting as well. Delegates to the Washington, DC National Convention for 2018 will be elected at the business meeting. Finally, remember the 79th Annual Educational Program and National Meeting will be July 9-13, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri at the Intercontinental Hotel at the Plaza. This meeting promises to offer lots of educational programs as well as an opportunity to sight see the Kansas City area. Please make plans to attend this great meeting!! I look forward to working with all VSSAMT members. I will be happy to visit schools to encourage certification with AMT. If you would like a visit, please send me an email. [email protected] Happy Spring/Summer to all, Anna Catron, MT (AMT) (HEW) President VSSAMT

Editor’s Message I am proud and honored to be your editor for the VSSAMT newsletter “The New Virginian”. This newsletter is to help all our society members to keep up the AMT news. You can see where our next meetings are located and we encourage members to come to these events. AMT members are like part of your family and we enjoy keeping up with each of you.

I can remember the first AMT National Convention I attended. I got off the plane, picked up my luggage and went outside to catch my ride to the hotel. A lady walks up to me and says “Welcome to the AMT meeting”. I was surprised and asked her how she knew I was coming to the National Convention. She answered that I looked like an AMT member. Since that day I have always been made welcome and I always felt like I was with family.

Please come to one of our meetings whether you choose a state, region or national event and we will make you welcome. These meetings are a chance to learn and have a good time.

Hope to see you soon.

Patty Harris, MT,

Editor

This year’s Leadership Training is called “How Do You Manage What You’ve Got”. There will be three 30 minute sessions presented and they are titled: “What are You Doing with Our Money?”, “CEU’s are Your Responsibility” and “A Drive Through the AMT Website”. The location of the 80th AMT Educational Program and National Meeting will be held in Washington, DC July 1-6, 2018 at the Hyatt Capitol Hill. More details will be available on a later date. The 81st AMT Educational Program and National Meeting will be held in the Great Lakes District. Remember to enter all your continuing education credits into AMTrax. AMT does not enter this information for you. It is quick and easy and most of all it is free to all members. A Certification Continuation Program (CCP) cycle has recently ended and a random 10% audit has just occurred. I cannot stress how important it is to record all your education credits into AMTrax and to ensure you have the required continuing education points to remain certified. Please attend your state society meetings. They are an excellent source of continuing education, an opportunity to share your knowledge with your AMT family and to keep abreast of current AMT information. This is a special time for me to say how very proud I am of the Southern District and to congratulate all the national award and publication winners. This year we had a total of nineteen national awards bestowed on Southern District members. How awesome is that? Thank you for all your hard work! In closing, I would like to say thank you to all of you for your hard work and dedication to AMT throughout the year and making the Southern District shine. Each of you truly are the “Pride of the Profession”. I look forward to seeing each of you at your state meeting this year and in Kansas City. If you have any questions or concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or phone me at (h) 615-833-3427 or (c) 615-424-0550 AMT is the choice for allied health professional certification.

Respectfully submitted, Kaye A. Tschop, MT AMT Southern District Councillor

Legislative Message

by Patty Harris

Virginia has been quiet lately about any legislature affecting the laboratory but we are all watching to see what the federal government will do with our medical care.

The 2017 Legislative Symposium was held on March 20-21,2017 with members of ASCLS, ASCP, AMT , Clinical Laboratory Management Association, and the Association of Genetic Technologists joining together to discuss issues concerning the laboratory. This is an annual event which gives people from the laboratory a chance to meet with members of our Congress and discuss the issues facing medical care.

Magnolia Educational Treasures

Delegate Report

October 2016

I would like to thank the Virginia State Society for giving me the opportunity to attend this meeting. The educational sessions that I attended were excellent. Three of my favorites were: 1-“I Got a Flu Shot, But I Still Got the Flu” by Dr. Eric Hoy. He was able to explain the difference in some flu viruses and the makeup of the vaccines. 2-“Rotator Cuff Syndrome” by Solomon Goldenberg I had a fall right before this meeting and had injured my shoulder. This session taught me much about the rotator cuff and injuries that happen to it and how to promote healing. I was able to decide I probably had a partially torn rotator cuff and what exercises to do to help it heal. 3-“Cardiac Markers” by Angela Morrison, RN PNI and Debra Wolff, RCS, RCI, RRT, CCT. my most favorite session!! These women were just incredible! They brought the apparel and equipment used in performing a cardiac catheterization procedure and performed the procedure on the heart from a pig. It was quite amazing. They had film of human catheterization procedure and a heart transplant procedure. Throughout their presentation, they discussed the importance of the laboratory values and the results needed to proceed with these procedures for a successful outcome I highly recommend the Magnolia program as an excellent way to obtain many of your CEUs and network with your state members and members from other southern states.

Delegate Report for Magnolia

Educational Treasures

by Patty Harris, MT

On October 27-29, 2016 I attended the Magnolia Educational Treasures at the Holiday Inn in Gulfport, MS. The Magnolia Treasures is always a well-planned program that offers two days of continuing education for all areas of the laboratory. The sessions offered at this event are just as good as the sessions offered at the National Convention. Magnolia Educational is hosted by the states of Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky and Florida. These AMT Societies join together every two years at a location in one of the hosting states and present this meeting. This meeting is ideal for members that cannot travel the long distances to the National AMT Convention or members that cannot get off work for the week.

Each state helps with the meeting so no one has the entire responsibility. Virginia usually has the task of being the moderator for all the sessions. Other states have tasks such as registration, speaker gifts and speakers. This allows all members to have time to attend sessions, visit with old friends and even make new friends. I hope more members will make plans to attend this meeting. The next Magnolia Meeting is planned for Pigeon Forge in 2018.

My favorite session was “Cardiac Markers”. This session was not what I expected. The two presenters had an exciting presentation with everyone spellbound during parts of the session. These ladies actually brought a heart from a pig and dissected it to show us the different parts.

This is one of the presenters dissecting the heart of the pig.
